Lightbulb Michigan Breeders?

Hello! First time poster here, looking for some advise on where to buy our puppy. Our last doberman has passed away, and we are finally looking to get another. However, our previous breeder has retired.

So my question is what reputable breeders are in Michigan these days? I'd like to be able to visit and get a feel for myself of the environment it was raised in. Looking for a family dog. Won't be showing or breeding. Price is not an issue, we just want a healthy and happy puppy.

Any advice would be so helpful

Thank you!

Gorrmae for sure. Lyndobe is another great breeder.

There is also a memeber Shelian (sp?) dobes, with a gorgeous bunch of dobermans (a lyndobes boy names wheeler) who lives and shows in Michigain and the midwest area who I hope pops into the thread

Welcome. So sorry for the loss of your boy. In Michigan there is also; Melrae, Terrylane and Camee. Google should find all of these for you. A little farther afield is Windsong in South Bend, IN.

Good luck with your puppy search and be sure to let us know how it goes.

Thank you! I just submitted an application to Melrae, and am currently checking out Windsong as we speak.

Is it typical to fill out an 'application' so to speak? I feel like I am trying to adopt a child I hope they like my answers! Hahah.

Can I get some opinions on prices? One breed is $2000, for shots, ear cropping and tail docking. Another is $1700 for the same options. Both have done genetic testing and such. Is this average? I'd rather spend more if the pup with be healthier in the long run! Any input would be great

I'd say those prices are fairly average. From what I gather, $2000 is more the average these days, but could be wrong.

Kmbeach is correct.

Across the u.s. the average price is $1500-2500 with the Midwest falling right in the low end to middle of that range usually.

I'd plan some meeting with each breeder at local shows and/or more phone or email discussions and get to know each other, figure out who you! feel more comfortable with. You aren't just paying for a well bred puppy but a support system as well for his/her whole life so you want to really like your breeder.

I agree that $2,000 tends to be more in line with what I hear, and it's fully what I expect to spend when I get ready to buy another one.

Applications are pretty typical, but not all breeders use applications or have their applications online. Many times it has a lot to do with how computer savvy the breeder is. I know both Melissa (Melrae) and Elaine (Windsong) and know that Elaine does not have an application. She is older and prefers to talk to you on the phone and then meet you in person. I also know that her (Elaine's) next litter will be in July 2014. (Just a little insider information there ).

Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Thank you for the info! I submitted the online app for Melrae, and she informed me that the price was $2000. She has yet to review my app, but I hope to hear from her soon I e-mailed Windsong as well, but have yet to hear anything! July would be so perfect! Thank you for the tip!

Exactly So far I've had great conversations with Lynn from Lyndobe. Melissa from Melrae seems great as well! It is so hard to choose!

Check out www.hoobly.com username geminidanesdobermans. She just had pups and there are 5 left now, all females 3 red, 2 black. She is also in Jackson Michigan.

First, this thread is 4 years old.

Second, that is so very far from a reputable breeder it's hard to find a place to start. I hope you stick around the forum and read and learn. The stickies in the Breeders forum is a great starting place: Breeding and Breeders - Doberman Forum : Doberman Breed Dog Forums

First this is a regional area. Sorry that it has not been updated in years. My guess your not from Michigan.

Second how do you know anything about this breeder? What research have you done?

First, resurrecting old threads can be confusing, since people might not immediately realize that is is an older thread. The OP hasn't even been on the forum over a year.

Second, the fact that this person evidently breeds at least three different breeds (Dobes, Danes, and APB/AmSaff), and sells the pups cheaply though what appears to be a broker site pretty much sums them up as someone that wouldn't be recommended by a knowledgeable person.

I don't need to be from Michigan to look the breeder up and do some research. Reputable breeders title their dogs in some venue (either AKC championships throughout the pedigree - that means the parents, grandparents, and so on, NOT just saying "championship lines", which is a classic selling point of a backyard breeder, and means that somewhere in the pedigree was a champion, but they do nothing to prove their dogs are worthy of breeding and they are far from the dogs that actually earned those titles) or working sports like IPO; they health test their dogs with the recommended health testing of the parent club, are generally active in the breed club or sports or something in the "dog world," they have thoughtfully planned their breedings to best compliment their bitch and improve her weaknesses rather than just breeding her to the dog they own; they are most concerned with improving the breed - health, temperament, structure - those are most paramount. They send puppies home cropped and docked and support those puppies for life.

There's much much more, but it's obvious from a quick glance that this breeder is not one that would be considered an ethical breeder working to improve the Doberman breed and not one many here would support. This is someone breeding without truly understanding the correct structure and temperament of the breed, without outside evaluation of whether their dogs are actually correct to the standard and should be bred.

Again, I encourage you to stick around and do some reading here. The DPCA also has a ton of information on their website. www.dpca.org.
