APDT - position statement on "elective surgeries"

I'm incredibly disappointed to see that the APDT (association of professional dog trainers) has decided to see fit to make a statement on "elective surgeries" - cropping and docking.

I will no longer be recommending/supporting them as a place to find trainers. It's not the business of a professional association for trainers to make recommendations on veterinary procedures.

I just read that earlier today and had to shake my head at their statement

More likely is the organization buys into some of the animal rights movement propaganda.

That was where I was going to Meadowcat - But in stead of buying into it - I would say here's some sponsorship or something to the fact - just get on board with us and it's yours

I would say that they are alienating themselves from a lot of the people who actually do stuff with their dogs: Dobermans, Rotties, Boxers, Great Danes, etc...... And the part about communication just cracks me up.... a cropped & standing ear is much more communicative than a floppy hound ear.

I personally have nothing against an all natural dog - even when it is a Doberman, but believe in the concept of choice in all things.

Red face

There is nothing more majestic than cropped ears on a Dobie!!! Unfortunately, we just got an 11 month old rescue Dobie with big floppy ears....he's a goofball but we love his "hound dog" appearance

The APDT has apparently chosen to remove their statement, based on pushback from their members. While I'm glad to see that, I'm still disappointed that it was ever even done in the first place.

These are the kinds of things that are starting to creep up all over and I do think we need to be vigilant, not just on the cropping/docking issue, but on all kinds of small things that are little infringements on dog owners rights. I would urge you all to pay attention all over the country - there are a lot of attempts to ban hunting trials, there are mandatory spay/neuter initiatives in different areas of the country...all kinds of things that the animal rights agenda is pushing. Things that may not affect "our breed" but we all need to work together. It doesn't take much when it's a small thing here or there to get the ball rolling towards bigger things later. It's very easy to change the mindset of the public into thinking "of course we should ban that!"....I can't tell you how many people I know that think we should definitely ban certain training tools, or that cropping SHOULD be banned, etc. Even if YOU don't want to use that tool....it's a very slippery slope.
