Cool When Pigs Fly

Just started reading this book by Jane Killion
So far seeing excellent results.....
It’s about training success with dogs..........
First I began with purchasing clickers...........and some high value training treats......soft treats.
The soft treats hoss could eat quickly.
And there is a reason for this....................you will see real soon.

First assignment is called getting loaded (no vodka involved)........
and how to ......
“Power Up The Clicker”
We do the following two times per day for 3 days.......
Get twenty pieces of real small treats then we complete the following as fast as we can..........
Click......treat.......wait a beat
click....treat....wait a beat...........
over and over....until the treats are gone.
Boy ......I am all thumbs at this exercise...........but increasing my speed daily.
The goal is ......to time the click and treat within a half second of one another.....in order for Hoss to start making an association between the two things..........the click and the treat.
Hoss likes this exercise........enjoys liver treats..........
Stay tuned for more......

Loading the clicker only took about 3 seconds for my dogs (exaggeration, but only slightly). Getting mom to click at the right time took longer. I tend to be an extraneous clicker.

Well, good night all.

It's still dark here; 38 and foggy with misting rainy stuff. Cloudy with chance of rain all day, possibly even snow showers in the evening. It's hardly worth even bothering to be up today. See ya later.

Today is day 2 of "getting loaded" by powering up the clicker..........
Click - treat- wait a beat..........we performed better ......faster ....... today.........
Opted to do this today standing over Hoss versus sitting on the couch.............
Had all treats on ledge ...and then click- treat- wait a beat was performed .....as fast as we could ............
Learned today ....my clicker has this little wrist band.......attached to the clicker........opted to have the wrist band around the palm of my hand versus around my wrist .....it increased my "human" mobility of the clicker.........I was faster........
Hoss of course has no issues with his job........which is eating the soft treats as fast as he can
So Hoss and I will complete the same exercise at lunch today.....and also dinner time......so we are practicing 3 times per day versus the suggested 2 times per day.
Hoss and I always like to go the extra mile.........after all we are Doberman people
Stayed tuned for more progress reports..........Louise and others ..........hope you are tuned in .........Hoss is 3 .......amazing results already!!

Pigs Fly is a good book, and we love clicker training. I tend to use it most when I'm teaching a new skill.

Thanks...will do a variety of different locations as suggested......and MC........all of this has started as a result of Hoss losing focus on me when he senses cats are in the area. Sorry to say he almost caught one last week within our compound. Sooooooooo.....decided to re-approach with the basics and thought clicker training would be interesting.
In the past ...I thought I had his attention.........BUT......based upon what I have experienced over 2 days ......I was wrong.....
Previously he was looking at me...while also quickly scoping at other things.........today......different dog................
At lunch today..........took him outside within our fenced compound ...like we normally do ...........
Previously once released he would gallop off to look through the fence for the cats across the street.
BUT .....today.......he walked in place at my left side.......did his business........and wa-la appeared not so anxious to leave me in the dust so to speak.............
We completed our afternoon training exercise .....click-treat-wait a beat ............and then he layed by my side. Hummmmmmm..........
Appears to have MORE interest in me now..........suspect in his head I represent "A BIG LIVER TREAT". LOL
I think I am onto something here !!!!
Thanks to all clicker people for encouraging me to try this approach...........the other day I watch Tricia's dobe Boon .....ignore squirrels in pursuit of clicker/treats..............awesome site to see........this gave me new hope for Hoss versus Cat's ......we can do this !!!!!! Rosemary's examples have always stuck my interest ..........along with Meadowcat ............thanks clicker people.
Our work will continue. Maybe someday I will be able to post a video of us walking past a cat with Hoss displaying excellent manners.

Just remember to cut back on his ordinary food to account for those treats, or your Mr. Piggy will become hog-shaped.

Here is the next exercise for the next three days.......to be performed 3 times per day its called : "Powering up the dogs name"

Call dogs name - click- treat - wait a beat .........call dogs name- click- treat - wait a beat ..........as fast as we can.............using 20 small training treats during each session.

(getting faster with the clicker...........once again Hoss has no issue with eating quickly)

I often use “charged up” kibble when clicker training if I don’t want to upset weight or a tummy. Here’s how to do it. Cook bacon and drain it. Put several pieces in a snap top container with a couple handfuls of kibble. Shake it around. Leave it out of the frig for a while, to keep that bacon-smell infusion warm and active, and shake the container every time you think about it. Voila! Insanely high value treat! You can also charge with hush puppies from Cook Out. And...you can give a pinch of the bacon or hush puppy for a random off the wall high value!!

When I clicker train other people’s dogs, I almost always use bacon charged kibble. The dog thinks I am the best thing in the universe and the humans think I’m a magician!

And, HEY! Do some videos!

Always Playin’!

I sure hope so! With 2 pieces of bread, some mayo, lettuce and tomatoes...seriously, is there anything better than a BLT?

LD, good luck with your training...it's so much fun and also rewarding as it helps grow that bond between you and your dog. I never used a clicker with Mocha; we used "Yes!" as a marker...Mocha is treat and praise driven, about equal, well, maybe a little more treat than praise LOL but it's always so much fun to see that light come on when she gets what her dumb human is trying to teach her. At 5 years old, we're past the intense training stage but I still introduce new things every now and then just to keep both of us on our toes

She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader. She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion.

Thanks Tricia for the bacon recipe....will cook that up this weekend.......yes.....video good idea!
Seeing great results with this is conjunction with Hoss targeting CATS !!
Just yesterday.....we are outside...having our evening vodka tonic......and he cruises over to the fenceline and starts scoping for cats.
As soon as he started his prowling around .......called his name.....HOSS!!!! He head whipped around and man o man .....Hoss came running to me.......then I clicked.....and gave him treat.
He appeared to think about returning to the fenceline.......but this time...he hesitated ..........he layed down...NEXT TO ME.......
Now I am more interesting than a potential CAT ???????WOW...............I am clicker hooked.......
OMG.....this is great.

I ate a hard dog biscuit or two when I was a little kid. As I remember, it tasted rather like bone meal. You won't know until you've tried it.

You may be missing a culinary delight. Just sayin'.

Due to completion of my first two exercises I now have a dog that gets excited when he’s sees the clicker in my hand.....and when he hears his name his head whips around and comes running to me.
OK....whew....that was easy actually.
1st exercise : Click - treat- wait a beat.....
2nd exercise call dogs name .....Hoss- looks at me - click- treat - wait a beat
OK no problem...we are progressing.....
Next exercise.....is called : Free Shaping= training behaviors by rewarding the small progression towards what I want him to do for me........ without the use of luring or prompting Hoss.
So today I placed an empty a bowl on the floor FYI ..... My goal is to have Hoss touch it.
So I stand there and he’s standing there ..the bowl is between us on the floor.....
He just keeps staring up at me........I stood still.............said and did nothing just stared back at him.
He looked down at the bowl———-click-treat
He looked down again at the bowl......click ....treat ........
Then he stepped into the bowl...and kept his 1 paw in the bowl........would not remove it.........LOL........click-treat..........
So I moved the bowl to a different spot........
We started again.......he looked at me and pawed at the bowl......click-treat.
OK....he's getting this now........
Hoss slaps the bowl.....click - treat
Then over and over again .......he touches the bowl in some manner ...feet - nose etc.....each time .....click treat.....
This exercise was great for me actually as it focuses on ME and my ability pick out wanted behavior or progression towards my wanted behavior ......using my clicker.
This is so much fun because we are actually progressing with each exercise......will do this for a few days ...different areas.....different items.
Maybe a box, or tree stump..........(open to suggestions Tricia) ........
Tricia.....you right its so much fun to see him thinking..........trying to figure out what to do to get the clicker to sound which gets the treat.
