My dobbie is 2 years old and extremely friendly! He likes anyone and greets people at our door and rarely barks unless another dog is walking by. When we are walking he always wants to stop when someone is walking by us as he wants them to per him yet the moment they stop petting himhe begins to bark at them and obviously this scares them and it frustrates me as I know he is gentle but I don’t understand why he has this behaviour? Is it because he doesn’t want them to stop petting him?

That would be my guess - I guess the only way to find out is - when somebody quiet's and he start's to growl - have them -- VERY easy - start to pet him again - I would use somebody that knows dogs and can read them - he " Should " sign if he don't want petted - - My bet he is just talking to them - HEY - Don't stop . I would use caution in who you use - Don't want anything to happen to anybody - + it would be bad for him and you - This may not be good advice - Others will chime in I'm sure .

Good luck

Sorry here But I have a lot better idea here ! Disregard my first one : ) Tried to edit - but I got timed out - lol

That would be my guess - I guess the only way to find out is - when somebody quiet's and he start's to growl - I would reach down and rub him behind the ears and ask him What's wrong big boy - you want more rub's ???? My guess he will quiet barking and enjoy the rub + is will put the other people more at ease - Worth a try

Good luck

When my current youngest was frustrated, not pissed, just tryng to communicate his desires, he would bark very loudly, staring me right in the face. I always nipped it in the bud. Believe it or not, his command (only for this particular activity) was "Knock it off".

Now at pushing 4 yo, he never reacts this way. Also, he never did it to stranger's. Mostly me, my wife and our grandson.

Personally, I would not tolerate this behavior. Still... You should get familiar enough with your dogs body language and signals in order to determine his general comfort level and state of mind.

I have a 15 months old who does that to me and until recently I have usually told him to stop it. When he didn't I have stood up and made him lie down. So far it worked until last night when he decided he should get more forceful and try to use teeth. I crated him for a while which calmed him but I need to nip this behavior. I was thinking of just getting up telling him as you say to knock it off and walk out of the room. If you or anyone else has any other suggestion I would appreciate it.
