The beginning of tracking with a young dog, we starting early when they are a puppy, but you can start also whenever you want.

To start with you need: a bal, a leading string from about 10 meters when they are experienced in the beginning we use a leading string from 5 meters,
A tracking post, some food , if you are having a lot of birds you can use normal dogfood, the birds don’t like that.

First you walk your track, you put your tracking post in the direction were you tracking goes to, with a puppy or young dog you walk a track from about 40 mete. Then you have the time to learn it you put food about 50 cm from each other. When you walk your track you get the dog. Start from your tracking post, put your hand to the food and tell him softly to search, oke search , when the dog knows what to do try to let him search by himself, you will see that the will come back sometimes, don’t do so much about that as long as the dog search, walk slowly behind him.l

When he is at the end and he find his ball play with him or if you put his food at the end let him eat it all!

When you walk your track, at the end you put a ball or a cup of food, that is his or her reward after the tracking.
When you start tracking don’t let your dog have his food otherwise he isn’t hungry and not interested in the food.
We track with puppy with their collar on, later on you can other things like the choke but when you use that don’t put him on the choke.

When you walk your track, with a young unexperienced dog we always check were the wind comes from, you must have the wind behind you! and also search for a nice field.
Hopefully you understand it a bit like this, if not don’t hesitate to ask!

I am sure some people will learn it differently but this is how we learn them and works out well!

Let me know when you tried this!

When you are ready and he track well let me know I send you part two, how you further, lets do it step by step!

Elly that was a great explanation. The only thing that we did different with Rommel (which Chi is older so it probably wouldn’t apply) is we started him in a box. (He was only like 9 weeks old) Basically you take a flag, walk 5 steps (toe to heel) forward, put another flag, turn right, 5 steps, another flag until you make a box. Then stomp down the vegetation inside the box really good. Sprinkle the food randomly throughout the box, bring them over and tell them to find it, such, search, or whatever word you want to use. After about a week we started him on really short tracks, and they have just progressively gotten longer with alot less food. Today he didn’t have any food on the first leg at all. You have to keep them anticipating. Like Elly said, speak softly, and no corrections on the track. At the beginning of the track also, you do what you call a scent pad, you can stand there a little longer, and make almost a small box of your scent. Also, you can see in Elly's pictures that the leash goes between the dogs front legs. There is a book that has been recommended to me (I haven’t read it yet) but I plan on it, it is supposed to be really good. It is called Scent and the Scenting Dog. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/091412403X/103-7997010-3041467?v=glance&n=283155 Good Luck, It is alot of fun to do! It is amazing to watch them progress.

Some people over here do it in the box, also a lot of KNPV people, we mostly take a track not so short, because when you have a short track at the moment he understand he must stop because its the end! But everyone has his or hers methodes, and you must take the one who fits best with your dog.

But we hear soon enough how Chi will do his first track!!!! Little bit of yours and a little bit of mine it probably work out.

Thanks guys!!! Would love to start tomorrow but we have about 3 typhoons bouncing around pretty close to the island right now so it is WINDY! Might have to wait til next week to start when the winds have died down a bit. I'm really looking forward to this - figure we can just add it to our bag of tricks :)

Is it right to assume that in the beginning I should start with straight tracks and no turns?

I have a really great field right next to my house, but it's also the field where we play frisbee - do you think her association with that field and the frisbee would screw her up? I was thinking that I could place the frisbee at the end of the track and her reward will be a game after the track.

Today on my work I made a example of a track, no corners yet first learn to track, don't make it to diffecult at once, just do it step by step! If you don't understand some things let me know! there is always someone who does know! Thanks BIB for the "flagg"I really didn't know to translate it, I looked in every translation, here they call it speurpaal!

Elly, Zucker and BiB,
Thank you so much! The pictures, advice and articles are all awesome! I researched all weekend on the net and found some great advice on what to do with a dog that already knows what it's doing, but very little on how to start. Can't wait til the storms pass and we can start. Think I might even take Petri (the chihuahua) out and work with him too :)

I think what Elly meant by a leading string, is a leash. 10 meters is Schutzhund regulation length. (33 feet) In a trial you have to be at the very end of that leash, so that they know you are not guideing the dog. But like she said, something shorter would work fine with a puppy.

Thats what I thought but the dog in the picture has what looks like a leather leash so I wondered. Thanks

Yes, thanks BIB thats a leash, I am sorry for my english Molari, cause some words are so typical dutch, and then I take the translation literally, it goes wrong some times, but correct me if I write it wrong!:emo11:

We uses with dogs who just start a 5 meter leash, cause you walk a bit more nearby the dog, The leash we use is not a leather one but a one we make our self, we buy rope in a what we called a dumpstore, a store were you can buy outdoor clothes and shoes, also army clothes, the rope is been used by people who climb mountains very strong and it feels nice in your hands. You can buy it here as long as you wanna have it.

We never order much, cause we have a lot of shops with all kind of things for dogs, also working stuff, like dumbells, sleeves etc.
