Surgery scheduled for October..

Well I ruptured two disc's again! This time has been the worst yet, one protrusion is 9mm the other 5mm. I was doing nothing out of the ordinary when this happened.

Finally I am going to have surgery!! I have to wait till the beginning of October. It's been tough as I have to spend most of my time in bed. I cannot train the dogs, this has been the toughest thing for me.

Once the surgery is done I am out of the hospital the next day! But will not be able to return to work for six months but I think that's due to the nature of my job. I'm actually looking forward to this surgery, my back will be stronger and I will not have disc pain!! He did say that I will probably have back pain always, but I am use to that. But I won't have this kind of pain, the kind that keeps you in bed for days.

It's been tough on the dogs of course and I was hopefully going to do Cash's Schutzhund 1 this fall. That is now put off till next spring. But I am going to come back good and strong, I will be able to train my dogs how I want to train them. Up till now I have had to cap Cash's drive sometimes as I just can't move like I want to. Hopefully that will change and in time I will be as good as new!!

Oof, sorry, back problems suck. You have a good hopeful attitude about it, though, and I will send vibes you have an easy recovery and a really good outcome.

You will so appreciate the surgery....I've had my back done twice in my twenties, and I swear I've never had any trouble since (and I'm 60 now)....You'll also wake up with less pain than you've had in ages....a new lease on life.

Ow, ow, ow! Back pain is horriable. I did something to my back removing a lawn mower blade a long time ago. That is when I learned not to move a certain way. I feel for you and hope your surgery is a resounding sucess. Methods have certainly improved by now. I know you must feel badly about Cash and Jasmine, but everything will work out for you. Sorry you wont get to do the trialing with Cash, but Spring will be here before you know it.

That's what I am hoping, to have less pain would be a real treat for me!! I also decided to have the surgery because every time I rupture a disc I end up with nerve damage. Also my legs are much weaker than they use to be.

How come you needed the surgery twice?

It seems it's only this one area of my back so I'm hoping that once the bad discs are removed that will be the end of it.

I wish they had an easy solution to my back/neck and headache problems. I hope the surgery is successful and that all goes well for you, I will say a prayer for you and send healing thoughts your way. I am sure that your doggies will give you nothing less than all their love and understanding, as that is their way. Good luck with your healing and you will be back better than ever before you know it.

There is never an easy solution however I have found that you must be a cheerleader for your own healthcare. I have told my doctor to send me for MRI's, I have told him to send me to nerve specialist's, and surgeon's. I have kept after him. In Canada it is different as we don't pay for these services, so doctors are reluctant to send you to see them.

I hope you find a solution to your issues, keep trying!

Finally got a surgery date for October 17th...woohoo! They will be doing the following, posterior bilateral L3-L5 spinal decompression with L4 laminectomy and L4-L5 discectomy and L5-S1 discectomy.

Basically what that means is they will be removing the bad part of the discs. They will also remove part of my spinal canal wall to make room for the nerves in that area. I have severe stenosis.

The surgery takes about 3 hours and then I go home the next day..lol! I will not be able to return to work for 6 months!

I was to be the official photographer at this years Schutzhund Nationals, unfortunately I won't be able to go. I'm in to much pain, and it's a 3 1/2 hour drive and I think that alone would do me in. I'm so disappointed as I really wanted to be there.

Congrats on the date ! I hope all goes well, Ill be praying for a good outcome. Will you have to have any type of rehab after the surgery? I have been going to physical therapy for the past few weeks for my neck, it seems to be helping some but its not a total fix. We have a couple people there that had back surgery.
I hope that you will be feeling alot better after this, and back to doing the things you love with your dogs. I know I miss alot of stuff with mine and look forward to hopefully being able to return to it soon too. Good luck and take it easy!

The surgeon never mentioned rehab after surgery however I'm sure that I will have it. I know that they don't want you to do to much to soon as this will cause scar tissue. To much scar tissue and I'm back into a lot of pain.

Hope your neck feels better soon, I hate neck pain! And thank you for the well wishes.

How come you needed the surgery twice?

It seems it's only this one area of my back so I'm hoping that once the bad discs are removed that will be the end of it.
Both surgeries were on the same disk....the first they just snipped off the part that had slipped out....two years later, the rest of it slipped, and it was removed. Everything has been fine since. They told told me at that time, that I'd have arthritus in my back when I got older...(course, I was in my twenties, so "older" to me was 40 )....I might get a little stiff if I sleep too long, but that's it for the pain department. Also, once they get the disks off the spinal cord, nerve damage starts to reverse somewhat. It still feels like my sock is wrinkled up in my shoe on one foot, and there is no feeling on the top of that foot....but my brain must have caught up with the damage, and I hardly notice the numbness or "wrinkles...and haven't for years and years.

To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason, is like administering medicine to the dead.
