Ship canals are endlessly entertaining, Rosemary.
Long, long time ago I lived for a couple of years on the end houseboat on the Lake Washington Ship Canal (Seattle, Washington.--on the port side and directly behind me Foss Tug and Barge kept many of their big ocean going tugs and barges.
So there was stuff going on both day and night. The big stuff (the ocean going barges tended by the big tugs went through the canal mostly during the night--during the day the traffic tended to be smaller commercial vessels and lots of pleasure boats--both sail and power.
