A Surprise First-Time Visitor

As we were on our way out the back door to take the dogs out, I had to do a double take because this Cooper's hawk had just landed on our fence near our bird feeders. We watched it hop off and into the neighbor's yard, then it flew back up on our fence. I'm guessing it was either after the birds at the feeder, or the chipmunk which has been coming near the feeders to eat the spilled seeds on the ground. I told my wife to keep the door closed and Mocha quiet while I ran back in my room to grab my camera and I just knew it would fly off before I could get back. Much to my surprise and delight, it was still there when I got back so I slowly cracked open the screen door and got a few shots before it flew off into the woods behind our house.

If you enlarge the photos, it looks like it has a feather stuck to one of its talons.

You need to be the photographer for a guide book--there's just no comparison between yours and the lousy pictures I've tried to use to ID birds in some of those books. They are especially lacking in the raptor category.

Not helped by the fact that so many raptors are WAY WAY up in the sky when you see them.

I got a free app called Merlin Bird ID which is actually pretty cool and works really well. You can either answer some questions about the bird or, use a pic that you took. Lots of folks in the nature photography groups swear by this app.

Somehow, even when I really try to notice details about a particular bird I see, the deciding factor to ID the bird is something I didn't notice.

I've used that kind of thing [the website you gave, TN] for flowers and plants, but they either get technical too fast, or give me too many possibilities. Not helped by the fact that I'm at home trying to remember what something I saw an hour ago looked like.

Excellent --- Excellent --- Excellent Pictures TN ! Outstanding ! That is the first time I awarded 3 Excellent's + a Outstanding for picture taking ! You the Man TN !

We have many Coppers here around the farm - They will patrol the open ditch behind our house then sometimes , they will make a lap right up next to our house in the landscaping . They love Song Sparrows here . There is a corner post between the neighbor and I , they will sit on top of the post to eat a sparrow , You won't believe this , but it looks like it blew open a feather pillow when they start - won't think them little birds had that many . And also there is a Cedar tree by the ditch , have seen that Hawk fly into the growth on the tree and man on man - talk about birds flying out of it - like a thousand miles a hour and in every direction , LOL

Thanks TN ! Outstanding is all I can say !
