Kentucky Derby - any members been or in the area?

I am finally fulfilling my dream of going to the derby this year, sadly without Mom, it was a trip we were to do together but she passed last year, I promised I would still go. Do we have any members who have been or live in the area that can give me suggestions of places to see, tour companies etc... ANYTHING! Thanks!

I haven't, but I really enjoyed a trip to Louisville a few years ago. Ours was very bourbon focused

If you have Netflix and haven't yet watched it, the episode of the show "7 Days Out" that is on the Derby is really interesting!

Oh lucky you! My grandma and I wanted to make the trip to the Breeders' Cup this year as it was in Louisville but she unfortunately had an accident and with the recovery still in process we didn't want to deal with having to go up and down stairs and a lot of walking. Churchill Downs is notoriously poor for mobility access. Regarding tours, it depends on what you're interested in? I think there are Bourbon & Horses type tours, and there are several stud farms on official tours that you can visit, both stallion tours and broodmare tours.

MIA - I would just goggle it up for things to do in Louisville

I will say - if you like sea food - check out the King Fish restaurant - it's over looks the Ohio Rive - pretty neat place + good food !

Only live a hour and a half from there - but never been to the Derby - it's what ? The first week of May or so and we are always planting corn or beans here - but sometimes - will stop to watch the running for the roses ! Oh yeah - you have to get you one of them big hats to wear : ))

I went to the Derby in 1984 (yay Swale!). A friend and I went on a bus trip through a company she was working for at the time so obviously we just went to where they took us. On the Friday night before the Derby, they took us to the Red Mile race track in Lexington for harness racing. It seems to me that there may be a well-known harness race that night? Obviously, this was more than a few years ago. We were familiar with harness racing since there was a track in the city where we lived, and we used to go there sometimes so it was an enjoyable evening for us.

On my next visit to KY, I plan to go to Welcome to Old Friends Equine - A Retirement Home for Thoroughbred Race Horses Old Friends Equine and I'd probably want to do this https://www.horsefarmtours.com/ or this https://www.seethechampions.com/

BTW, I assume you are just going general admission? Because I don't think it's very easy at all (or possible?) to get an actual seat at the Derby unless you're like old KY royalty. Then again, they have built more stands now so I don't know how it works today. When I went, honestly, we watched the race on a TV underneath the stands. You couldn't go into the stands at all. We did go over to the infield for a while. It was a lot of walking and standing, not something I could do today. Don't forget to get a mint julep in a keepsake glass and then enjoy trying to cart a real glass around with you all day without breaking it. I still have mine! And then I started to collect them from other years so I have a dozen or so.

The weird things you remember about trips ... on the bus going there was the first time I ever ate Doritos. I could kill my friend for introducing them into my life!

Thanks everyone, this was a trip mom and I were to take together, sadly she passed last year, but I promised I would still go. Mary, thank you for the name of the retirement farm, I want to go there for sure!!!! I did manage to get a fancy seat right at the finish line - please don't ask what I paid LOL!!!! I bought a package, I had to take a second mortgage out on the house.

There are a few things I have searched out on the net that I want to do for sure, I didn't realize this is Lincoln's birth city so lots to check out there, and a few haunted places too! I don't do bourbon so that may save me a few dollars!!!!

Any suggestions are welcome and I thank you all!!!!

p.s. yes I have two hats on order! BIG hats! LOL Photos will be posted....

When I lived in Kentucky and my mom would visit, my husband would take her out for drives on Sunday mornings while I slept in. That's how I missed a visit to the cabin where Lincoln was born. They just happened upon it while out for a drive. https://www.nps.gov/abli/index.htm I'm not sure how far it is from Louisville, though - a couple of hours, I think.

BTW, you want to learn how to say Louisville if you're going to Louisville! It is not Lewieville. You have to pretend you have a mouthful of marbles and say Loowahville in something of a blur if you want to fit in there. Otherwise, the people look at you and say "you're not from around here, are you?" Ask me how I know.

I don't know how long you'll be in Kentucky, but driving through Mammoth Cave National Park is lovely. We did live about an hour from there and went over a few times. https://www.nps.gov/maca/index.htm We didn't go on any cave tours there. We just enjoyed the scenic drives which sometimes involves crossing rivers on a tiny (and free) ferry. We did go on the Lost River Cave tour, though, out of Bowling Green https://lostrivercave.org/cave-tours/ It was kind of cool. On a different note, the Corvette Museum is near Bowling Green as well. https://www.corvettemuseum.org/ Bowling Green is a couple of hours south of Louisville. Are you renting a car?

Hopefully, the government isn't still shut down by May! I'm thinking of planning a visit around that time. I just really want to go back and check on my magnolias that I planted all down my driveway, see how they're doing. And eat at all of our favourite restaurants that we found when living there. We loved our time in Kentucky.

Oh, you want to hear a funny story about my Doritos addiction which started on that bus trip?

A few years ago, I wanted to lose weight and swore off Doritos, among other things. I did manage to lose 60 lbs at the time over the course of several months, and no Doritos touched these lips during that time.

Then I heard a news report that said Doritos sales were way down. OMG, I didn't realize I had been eating that many that I was now influencing sales! I couldn't have Doritos going under! I'm back on them, doing my share to keep them profitable.

BTW, my favourite Canadian flavour of Doritos (Zesty Cheese) was not available in Kentucky so I had to have my mom bring massive quantities with her from Canada whenever she visited.

Make sure you take the tour through the museum. We have never had the time to take the barn tour. Wagner's Café/Restaurant is only a couple miles from Churchill Downs. Make sure you eat there. Jockeys and trainers frequent that little diner. In the movie Secretariat, Penny Tweedy and the guy she was trying to help syndicate the horse are featured in this little café. All kinds of horse racing pictures signed from owners/trainers hang on the walls. Neat little place. About 100 years old. We also went to the lousiville Slugger museum. That was fun. We are hampered by having livestock at the exposition so we can't stay away from the center for too long.
