Our cabin

I have mentioned our cabin project several times and thought I would give you a view of it.
We are trying to get the shell done before snow which could come anytime, so it is a race.
The rafters are up and that made it very visable on the road in and I got this pic as it was so pretty.
The fields of wheat and barley are harvested. The mountains were smokey due to fires as far away
as California.
Our Cabin is visible in the upper left. The rafters being a yellow color. Our cabin is stained so you
can't see it as well. Still needing to go up and put top coat on and install windows and doors. Then
it can rest until next Spring when we start on the interior.

John, awhile ago I sent you pictures via email and also a pm, but you didn't respond, Wondered if
you even received it. Really this pic is for you. I know you didn't get to go to your cabin this year
and I felt bad. You should be going in for eye surgery soon? Been thinking about that, too.
Wishing the best there.

Hi Bonnie.
So glad that your wonderful project is coming along so nicely. I can't wait to see it in person. (New "eyes" in October and November) So I will be up in Yellowstone on and off over the summer.

And no... I never got your e-mail. It's [email protected] just to double check.

I just read your updated thread on Kiri's situation. I'm keeping you and her in our thoughts and prayers.

Looks like Wheat country to me Bonnie - In the back ground - what mountains are they ? Looks like a nice quiet place to me - Pretty country !

BTW - what kind of contractors are you ? I wouldn't let a little snow and cold stop me I will say - from experience - when you hit your finger driving nails - I hurts a lot more when it's cold - lol

Thanks for the update .

@ Kenny (Doc)

The Grand Tetons to the East. The Rockies to the North. And the Sawtooth Mountains to the West. When it comes to terrain and country, this neck of the woods is about as special as it can be. Not to mention the wildlife: Moose, bison, elk, dear, bear (both black and grizzlies) wolves. coyotes to name a few. Birds? The biggest raptors in North America and in the middle of an amazing song bird migration path.

My cabin is about 65 miles North of Cressrb's in Montana acrcoss the Targhee Pass

Edit to say: Oh.... And the fishing! They are a stone's throw from Henry's Lake/Island Park recreation area. Fishing nirvana.

Doc~ we are not contractors. Just two senior citizens trying to build a dream and almost killing ourselves doing it. Everything we are learning by 'hard knocks' we wonder if we will ever use it again!
We have a man helping us now and would not have made it without him. I know we could not have done that steep roof. Our daughter is helping, too. I mainly, cook and clean up and take care of
the dogs, lol, plus am the director and critique of the work.

Yes, John, the wildlife! Everyweek, something new. First Mr. Moose that came to see how we were changing the landscape. Then a new bull elk brought his five cows to some visit. Then the hawks
since the fields have been harvested and lots of mice. Just gorgeous. The Targhees are to the east there and our friends have a cabin in the woods (personally, I love the view and like seeing the
sunset and sunrise) but they have a camera set up and have visitors of cougar, mama bear and cubs, deer, and grizzly.

Here is my pride and joy. Our deep well hand pump. Our well is very deep and water so cold and clear and this makes it easy. No help from solar or electricity. If only I had my camera when I
first gave the dogs water from it. Jada was just thankful for the water, but Duggan had to see where the water came from and how it worked - just like a male. ha

@ ecin

Elk when not in rut are no problem. In the fall, one gives them a wide birth.

Black bears are pretty benign. I have huckleberry picked within 100 feet of a bear doing the same thing. Still....

Grizzlies are something to be totally avoided. After the '88 Yellowstone fire we had to deal with them for years. When soft side camping in grizzly territory my weapon of choice is a 18 1/2 inch barreled pistol gripped 12 ga shotgun with magnum 00 shot. I've never had to use it but it sure makes me feel safer

A moose cow is quite benign unless startled or with a calf. I was once stalked by a huge female. I did not realize that I had separated her from her calf. Once they were reunited she was fine. It was truly the scariest wildlife encounter that I have ever experienced

A bull moose is avoided at all costs unless you are hunting it. Probably one of the most unpredictable and potentially violent critters on the planet.

Coyotes... Meh...

Wolves.... Never seen one from less than 200 yards + away. They are pretty shy.

Cougars... Stalked twice in my life. I was armed. Sat down, did not act like prey. It went away both times. The was in Oregon, not Montana.

Bison.: In May and June, until they are hazed back into the park, they are all around our cabin area. Leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Nobody but an idiot will try to approach a bison.

Other animals we have to avoid: Skunks and porcupines.Last year my cousin's dog took a faceful of needles and had to be driven 100 miles North to have surgery. Ugh...

Mostly though, if you act rationally, the wildlife there is beautiful and easy to deal with.

Yes Doc, this year the man who leases our land planted half in wheat. Previous years it has been barley.

I have been trying to figure out you post above where you started it with 'Holly??" What did you mean by that?

Always heard with puma you make yourself bigger....don't run away, don't lean over to pick up a rock or something--wave your arms and make noise. But never have had a chance to try out the advice.

We had a mama bear (black) and her two cubs wander through our neighborhood just a week or two ago. I stopped and watched her shake an apple tree and pig out on the fruit that fell. Another person screeched to a halt, jumped out of her car and rushed in to take pictures (teenagers....sheesh). When mama reared up and did a little huffing charge toward her she dashed back lickety-split. Why people can't just be content to watch quietly from a reasonable distance, I don't know.

True, ECIN can be a little elliptic on his posts......What DID you mean by "Holly", Kenny??

This is what we got done last weekend. One window - yay! I think the others will go much faster. Made a lot of mistakes with the first one.
We are always rewarded at the end of the day with a glorious sunset. It is probably a large file, but I didn't want to edit or change it.

Back at the cabin for three days this past week. Trees are changing colors. Temps are dropping. The rush is to get the cabin shell completed so it can set thru the winter. Roof is on, shingles are this next week
and windows are all installed. Two doors to be installed and then it can be put to sleep until spring.
Kiri has turned into an avid mouser. I hate it, but she is good! Better than our terrier. She is quick and driven and will bring them back to us and drop them. Thankfully she doesn't eat them.
We have a red headed sapsucker living in our Aspen grove and he loved teasing the dogs and it kept them busy running back and forth hoping to catch him.
Freaky looking spider which you will see in the photo. Trying to find an ID for it.
Heard elk bugeling early in the morning. It is hunting season and we made sure the dogs kept their orange jackets on.
Saw a great horned owl fly up from the side of the road. They don't make a sound and they are so huge it can give you quite a start.
Also, heard some wolves way out in the fields late in the evening. Tried to take a picture of an eagle making off with what looked like a rabbit, but the cell ph. just wasn't good enough to give a
clear picture. He was so huge, the first thought it was a wild turkey.
Here are a few photos.

I'm thinking Araneus gemoides

https://www.insectidentification.org...t-Faced-Spider

It looks like he has two little bumps of his abdomen??

The pics from the site above stopped displaying, so took down your pic too. Check out the site, especially the gallery, if you REALLY want to know.
