Update - life, the universe & Dobes

Hi everyone, thought I’d pop in for an update! Things have been insane since January, both good and bad.

Human updates:
I was lucky enough to get my dream job! I left my old steady, reliable job of almost 10 years. It was terrifying and very sad. They gave me a wonderful send off with flowers, cards and a cake, it made me cry. I started my new job on April 27th with the Federal Government. I now have a pension, full benefits, sick time and a host of other things not to mention a wage increase of almost double. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders! There’s been a lot of training and courses to go on, it’s been keeping me very busy. But it’s going well so far, nice boss, nice co-workers and so far I’m enjoying the actual work.

My husband almost lost his business this year. The company we had been renting our lot from for 15 years went bankrupt. The property was sold while in receivership and the new owners asked us to vacate. Our little town is on an island and in the middle of an industry boom right now so land is at a premium. We searched and searched and couldn’t find anything and were starting to make plans to shut it down. At the very last minute a gentleman offered to lease us his vacant piece of property, we were thrilled only to find out that the location wasn’t zoned for our type of business. We embarked on a rezoning journey with the city that was the most frustrating, complex, convoluted and just plain horrible experience ever. It’s taken 6 months of seemingly endless rounds of meetings, paperwork, contracts, phone calls and emails not to mention an enormous amount of stress but the rezoning has finally gone through and hopefully we will finally be in our new location by the end of the month. Fingers crossed!

Dober-updates:
Soter is doing better, my little baby boy turned 4 on July 31st I can’t believe it! We’ve finally settled into a routine/schedule of diet, exercise, acupuncture and supplements that seems to be helping him a bit. His blood sugar is still low but it is higher than what it was. He’s still having seizures but the duration between them has increased from one every month to one every 2 to 3 months. We're on day 69 without a seizure YAY!!!

We’ve been doing Nosework through the Denise Fenzi Sport Dog Academy and we’ve been having a great time! We had a rough start – mostly due to my inexperience as a handler but we’ve got our issues sorted out and Soter has really taken to it. We went to a Nosework seminar with Lucy Newton this month and learned so much! All the puppers came with us and our wonderful breeder was kind enough to board the girls while Soter and I attended the workshop. We’ve made amazing progress since we’ve been back and our instructor thinks we’re almost ready for a trial.

Coco and Freyja are both doing well, happy and healthy. Coco turned 7 in April and we think Freyja did too 😉 Coco still acts like she’s 3 lol! Now that things are settling down and we have Soter’s NW issues under control, I’m starting to do Nosework with Coco too, she has great drive and energy and is just such a joy to work/play with! I tried a little bit with Freyja but you could clearly see that she just wasn’t enjoying herself so I let it be. Freyja is still actively participating in her favorite sport though – bossing around the Dobermans.

Our beautiful Jinx turned 4 in April as well (April is a popular month with our crew). I was also starting Nosework with Jinx but unfortunately she is having some health trouble. We noticed a strange lump on her lip a week ago. At first we thought it was a bug bite or an injury from one of the other ones from playing too rough. It didn’t look serious so I cleaned it and put some polysporin on it and just kept an eye on it. It just kept getting bigger, noticeably bigger, so after 4 days I called the vet. We took her in yesterday and the vet is reasonably certain that the lump is a tumor. It’s an evil, nasty looking thing now, about the size of my fingernail but protruding out an alarming (to me) amount and black. Jinx is scheduled for surgery Friday morning. The vet is confident that she can get it all and she will of course send it away for a biopsy.

I’ll update Soter’s seizure thread and keep you posted on Jinx. Hopefully now that everything has calmed down a bit I can be more active again. I’ve missed DT ☺

I was in NW120 at bronze when you were taking at Gold. I loved watching Soter. Glad to hear he's doing better. I hope that whatever Jinx has going on doesn't turn out to be serious.
