Nature's Domain Grain Free Dog Food

We just bought a Costco membership last week and while we were there I scanned the Dog food aisle to see what they offered. I noticed the Nature's Domain Salmon and Sweet Potatoe Grain Free food. 35lbs for $32.00. I was wondering if anyone uses this food and if they liked it!

Nature's Domain Pet Food | Home

We currently use Pro Plan Shredded and the gang does really well on it but they have very large and frequent stools. We have been wanting to switch over to a grain-free food.

I would email the company and ask if the fish meal(not the best type of fish ingredient) and/or the salmon meal has been preserved with ethoxyquin. If they hem and haw or tell you this is the propriatary information of the vendor then more than likely the fish meal/salmon is preserved with ethoxyquin because if it is not, they will shout it from the rooftops.

The other ingredients to check are the potato, potato fiber and potato protein. I would ask them outright if these are souced from Amflora potatoes and the country of origin.

Amflora potatoes are potatoes that have been genectically modified for use in glue and
plastics not animal feed. They were never intended for use in animal feed but some pet food manufactures have decided this is a neat cheap potato ingredient to add to our pet foods. Germany seems to be the main country these are sourced from.

About Amflora potatoes.

Thanks for the info Linda, I will give them a call on Monday!

Just sent them an email, will see how quickly they respond!

I was told this is made by the same company that makes TOTW. Not sure if this is true or not.

The food is made by Diamond, and Diamond foods are ethoxyquin free now, according to the FAQ answer on their website.

It should be good to be Dog.

Then I don't think you are going to like what you hear about the pototes.

But I am glad you are asking, cause that is the only way they will change their ingredients. Ethoxyquin used to be used to preserve the fish till too many people asked and refused to use the food till it changed. Me being one of them. Now they proclaim how it is not used to preserve the fish.

We are currently switching from Orijen to Nature's Domain (the turkey formula). I have noticed no difference at all in Shanoa; she's doing well on the Nature's Domain so far.

This is from the FAQ from their website:

Most of the ingredients originate in the United States. There are critical ingredients that are not available domestically in an adequate supply and with as much quality as our international supply. We do purchase some ingredients from foreign suppliers such as potato protein from Germany and dried chicory root from Belgium.

Linda H mentioned potato protein in her prior post. Whether they are or are not the same potato protein I do not know, but until that is confirmed, I would question feeding that.

Here is the reply I received today:

Dear Kristina,

The potatoes are from within the US . We do import potato protein from France , and I am not aware of Amflora potatoes being harvested in France .

Our pet food company sources all protein meals (chicken meal, fish meal, etc) from vendors that do not use ethoxyquin. As always, only natural preservatives are used in our manufacturing process to preserve the foods.

I find this very interesting because she is the same person that sent me this concerning TOTW.

"Dear Linda,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Most of the ingredients in our formulas originate in the United States. There are critical ingredients that are not available domestically in an adequate supply and with as much quality as our international supply. We do purchase some ingredients from foreign suppliers such as potato protein from Germany and dried chicory root from Belgium. We screen for all toxins with a test called ToxiScreen. This test screens for other toxins besides melamine and cyanuric acid but heavy metals, pesticide residue, aflatoxin, vomitoxin, rodenticide, and many others. Should any of these contaminants be present in the sample, the ToxiScreen test will detect it.

Sincerely,

Pam Libbert
Customer Service Representative"

When I responded with the Amflora article from The Truth About Pet Foods she never emailed me back.

Now I wonder what to think as I find it hard to believe they source potatoes from Germany for TOTW and from France for Nature's Domain???????

I think I will email her again but will wait to see what kind of response EmilyB gets...

Linda

I do find it strange that they would import potatoes from 2 different countries for food which is made in the same plant. I will also wait and see what response Emily receives.

I'll let you know. If I have nothing next week, I'll send another email.

They were a lot quicker to reply about the bugs in the bag, and sent me a voucher for a free bag. Maybe they think I want another one.........

I just switched back to Nature's Domain because we were having some issues on the Kirkland chicken and rice. I'm very happy with Nature's Domain.

We use TOTW Salmon & Sweet Potato and love it. Nice coats, minimal stools.
