new food always starving???

So I have a 10 month old girl, and just switched her from eating Canidae Pure Sea to Merrick Salmon and Sweet Potato. She gets 2 meals a day. Since switching foods she acts like she is STARVING constantly...I can't feed her enough. I keep trying to keep her on the 2 meals a day, but she gobbles the whole bowl down, then digs at her bowl and whines at the closet door where I keep the bag of food. The past 3 days she has eaten almost 4 meals a day?? I got her checked for parasites and she was clear. She is acting completely normal otherwise. Merrick does have a little bit lower carb and fiber content than canidae pure, but the protein content is higher (not sure if these things could possibly be making a noticeable difference?)... Could she be going through a growth spurt, does she just really like this new food, or is there some other medical problem that could be going on?

Have you compared the calories? The Merrick may be lower in calories so not as filling.

Looks like the Canidae is 496 calories per cup as opposed to Merrick at 354 calories per cup. That's quiet a drop in calories, so you will have to figure out how many cups of Merrick will equal the calories you were feeding of Canidae per meal.

Why did you change? I didn't really look close, but it looked like Canidae might be a better food. Let me compare.

Did you check them on the Dog Food Advisor site?

There is a significant calorie difference between the 2 foods.

The Canidae has 496 kcal/cup vs 347 kcal/cup in the Merrick (if this is the correct version)

Huh, the Merrick site online i used says 354 calories. Not that much from what reddobes has, but looks like the company would be more accurate. Ahhh, reddobes has the limited ingredient listing and my is the regular.

Merrick Grain Free Real Salmon & Sweet Potato Dry Dog Food for Adult Dogs and Puppies

OP, Dog Food Advisor doesn't review either of those specific foods, but the Canidae does appear to have more meat content than the Merrick.

Thanks for the replies. I switched because her poops were always really smelly and mushy. Before canidae I had tried acana but it was not agreeing with her at all. She doesn't seem to do well on anything too rich. She is doing really well on the Merrick and seems to love it, she just always wants more of it. Should I keep her on this food and increase the amount I'm feeding, or is this a sign that this still isn't the right food for her?

Maybe try feeding slightly less of a different Pure line? So much fish oil doesn't agree with all dogs (Pure Sea has a lot). If she was eating more than she needed that would account for the mush. I used to feed Pure Sea and Pure Sky and had really good experiences with them.

Start with the suggestions on the bag, and adjust up or down as needed. Since she's always hungry and the calorie count in the Merrick is lower than the Canidae, try feeding her a bit more. If her poops get mushy, you'll know that you're overfeeding, and it might be time to try something else.

Maybe you were overfeeding her on the Pure Sea as suggested. Overfeeding will cause mushy stools.

Figure out how much Merrick equals the same number of calories you were feeding of Canidae and try feeding about 50 calories less and see how she does. Adjust her food by her weight. If she starts gaining, cut back, loosing add some.
