Hi All! I am a new Doberman puppy owner and have never owned one before. I have an 11 week old puppy Samson. He was cropped a week and half ago and sutures were removed on Friday. He was in a cup until two days ago and now the ears are hanging. I took him in to learn about posting yesterday and he still has some scabbing on his ears so I didn’t leave them in. My question is are the ears fine hanging until completely healed or will this make it harder to get them to stand? Thank you for any help you can give. Concerned new Dob Mom. 😀
His ears will be fine just hanging down. It is most important that you leave them unposted until they are fully healed with no scabs—running tape across an open wound, scabs or irritated skin is a sure recipe for problems.
Do you know what method the person your posting instructor uses? I would recommend the method we have in our tutorial:
If you want to put up a picture here of your posting job (once you get them fully posted) we'd be glad to give you some pointers. Posting isn't difficult in the long run, but when you're learning, you're likely to feel all thumbs, and will probably have to try a few times before you get it absolutely right.
And some vets actually don't know that much about posting—it's not high on their list of things they have to know. Learning to post them yourself (which it sounds like you want to do) is the best way to go—that way you can deal with little disasters like wet or muddy posts, or posts which have popped out of the bottom of the ears—both of those require that you take them down immediately and repost, and you don't want to wait for an appointment.
And…..welcome to DT from Colorado! Actually, post pictures of your puppy even if you don't need help on posting; we LOVE puppy pictures!
Thank you so much!! I will definitely post pics as soon as I post them. My vet uses the same method except he uses the foam for wrapping pipes. He just went through it so fast that I hope I can do it when the time comes. I think we are still at least a few days if not a week away from posting. Thanks again for the help. I tend to be a worry wart and want his ears to be perfect!
Welcome to our world!
