Hello everyone! I need your expert opinions on this boy's ears.

I will eventually make a thread about his story because it has been quite a journey but long story short his previous owners couldn't keep him and the breeder didn't want to take him back. They came to me and I couldn't say no to helping him find the perfect forever home. Fast forward and Monday he will be taking the plane to his new family.

But the new family was wondering if there was anything they could do to straighten out his ear tips. He's 9 months old and I don't think it's too late to straighten them out, however I was wondering if you think it would be best to do full ear posts or if you think breathe right strips would be sufficient and if so, which technique you'd employ?

Hi Artemis. McCoy has a long crop. Really nice crop (if you like show crops). I posted his ears through 7 months. His cartilage was great. The ears standed well, but I felt the tips were a bit weak.

For about one month, I supported the tips with with thick mole foam, held in place with skin glue (liquid bandage, skin adhesive... Whatever) The are perfect.

Honestly, next time, I will just continue posting until both the pup and I am happy.

If these are new owners and unfamiliar with posting, I would go the mole foam routine.

Is the base ear, cartilage and leather firm and well established? If so give a bit of tip support and see what happens.

Heck... You can do it forever! The dog could not care less. Cut the thick foam, apply glue, treat and kiss the dog and call it a day! LOL

Best to the pup and you for finding him a home...

Thanks for chiming in and offering advice everyone - Nadia's ears were a breeze, but then again she has a medium crop (although I had Michele Lauzon tell me in reality that they are just a hair too short for shows, which even if they were wouldn't be a long show crop by any means) so I think I only posted them for a month maybe a month and a half total and I wasn't looking to have them super straight either because she has a bit more bell - as John has already said a more vintage crop, so I find it looks a little nicer with a slight curve, especially since the crop itself has a curled tip.

The adoptants had actually prepared to receive a young puppy but that fell through due to unscrupulous scamming so they actually did look and read at posting tutorials already.

I might start posting them as I am keeping him at my place for the last few days before he goes home. I still have my ear posting kit with the foam, the medical hypoallergenic tape, the baby powder and so on.

Full posts. Personally, I've never been a huge fan of breathe-rights. I guess they must work for some people but I just don't feel like they give enough support to really work that well. I'd rather just keep posting until the ears are done.

I'd do full posts first--I still haven't seen the ears (dial isn't very quick to load any sort of picture from any site but remotes are even slower) From the sound of what the ears presently look like--bases up--just ear tips curled. I'd always do full posts and see what they look like when they come down.

MeadowCat--my experience wih Breathrite strips worked well for only one type of tip problems and that was when the ear tip wanted to curl over the head only at the very tip--I had a couple of dogs with long, very narrow crops where the tips did that and one application of the strips with extra adhesive so they stayed al least a week cured them entirely.

John, I've used Mole foam for droopy tips when it's just the very tip not any part of most of the pinna (ear leather) It works for that kind of tip problem--but when you tell someone about it you need to really explain the difference between Dr Scholls Mole Skin and Dr Scholls Mole Foam--there are a lot of things you can do with Mole Faom that the Mole Skin would be useless--too flimsy.

I agree with all the posters who said--full posts and shouldn't be a problem to fix the ear tips at 9 month.

Good luck...

Alright so just wanted to thank everyone again for the sound advice. I ended up not posting him before he left, but his new family started posting and have done so consistently for over a month now and there is notable improvement!
She sent me a comparative picture that I need to upload and show you guys, but she is very happy with the results so far. She even found some black medical tape so it's subtle and discreet while out in public.

On a different (but just as happy!) note, he turned 1 year old today and has been with his new family, in France, since August 12th. The new owner writes to me every week and sends pictures and updates almost every day, she absolutely adores him and says he is the dog of her dreams, and can't thank me enough for trusting her with him. She takes him pretty much everywhere, he's a super chill sweet dude and a very fast learner. He has tried doberteen antics a few times but has quickly nipped any misbehaving in the bud. Really if every puppy family could be like this, there'd be a lot less dobes in need of rehoming and rescue!

EDIT: for some reason the randomly generated link for the image address has a swear word in it LOL so the forum keeps censoring it and the image won't show. I guess I will have to stop being lazy and do a proper upload.

And here is the young man himself:

To the left is his ear after a month of posting, in the middle was his ear when he arrived in France and to the right was after 11 days.

with his black tape

A few days before his 1st birthday (so nearly two months after the start of posting)
