Ear Posting Tutorial...How-to Question

I noticed that part of the ear seems to be folded back onto itself in the photo that you show where to cut (or not cut) the post. What is the purpose of that?
Is that the back (or outside) of the ear?

That is the inner front part of the ear. It needs to be taped back because that is the natural curve of the ear. If you tape it forward the ear will look very odd when you're done taping.

You can see here in this photo a bit of how the front inner part of the ear curves backwards:

Same dog - look at the ear on the left, you can see where his ear curves backwards:

Ditto what MC said! If you look at a natural eared doberman the fold will go the same way on them too.

Yes, all dogs have that little fold on their ears. You can easily see it on Lily, my pittie who has natural rose ears.

I don't have any pictures for you (I'm too dumb to take them and much to dumb to post them even if I had taken them) but look at any dog of any breed or no particular breed and even cats (with maybe the exception of a Scottish Fold) and you'll see that small fold of the ear at the center base on all of them.

I think I have it. I'm going to post my puppy for the first time tonight.
My female dobermans ears were always posted by the vet. With my male, I'm doing it because he was cropped with the breeder.
I just don't want to mess them up.
Thanks for the assistance.

Expect to feel all thumbs and to end up with some funky looking postings your first few times. Just keep at it and you'll be able to post in your sleep soon. It's kinda like learning to ride a bike...once you've got the knack of it, it just works.

If you end up with a posting job where his ears are pointing inwards at the tip, or if the bottom of the post pops out of his ear, you need to take the posts off immediately and start over. Which means getting off that sticky tape...here are some hints:
https://www.dobermantalk.com/ear-cro...ear-posts.html

Any questions, just ask here. Everyone here has had to struggle with learning to post for the first time. Posting pictures of your efforts here can be helpful too, if you're not quite sure you've got it right or if his ears start going all wonky on you. There are lots of experienced folks to give you some pointers here.
