Ear posting

Do you need to bridge the posts together when using the backer rod method?

Here’s some back info. His ears have been posted up for About 2 1/2 months. They are starting to stand up by themeselves without the bridge.

If he's over 4 months you probably don't need the bridge anymore.

Daisy, welcome to DT from Colorado. We'd love to see some pictures of your boy.
I second what GK said above.

Yeah... What gk posted. However, I am in the minority and bridge pretty much through posting. I'm sure that it is unnecessary, but that is the way that I have always done it. Old guy, stuck in cement!

If you do bridge, you have to be very fastidious as to your technique. Ears need to be at the proper angle (10 o'clock - 2 o'clock works well) Also, the biggest mistake people make (including vets) is to position the bridge to high. JMO, but, I feel the bridge, should you choose to use one, should be positioned barely above the skull.

But yeah... actually no bridge is really needed. I have just found that I like the control over the angle and it seem to keep the posts that might occasionally pop out in place.

Bottom line: I have never had a failed ear and I have never had a pup develop pockets.

Probably just good old fashioned luck.

I would recommend putting tape on the base of the ear and less tape towards the tips. I made a write up in the top of this forum that may be useful if you haven't read through it already.

I would also recommend taping from the base to the tip - and I'd also do a bridge close to the skull at 10 & 2 like 4 x4.

This is a different style of posting, but you can see where the bridge is placed, and that the entire ear is not covered in tape. This set of posts was done by Sophia Koster DVM - she cropped the whole litter for me and the owner of this puppy went to her for posting.
