Another ear standing problem

As I said in intro post Beau is 10 months old. I got him when he was 6 months old. His right ear will not stand. I have posted it all along using the zip tie method and he is still posted now. Once in a while when I remove the post it stands for a few hours then flops. I repost quickly but I am wondering if it's time to accept the fact that it will not stand. I am heart broken about it.

I've moved your post to the "Ears" forum so it may get more views.

Can you post a close up photo of his ears posted for us? I'm wondering if the zip tie method may not work as well for his particular crop shape - I might be inclined to try backer rods instead. I've posted using both methods, and while I do like zip ties I think they make work better for a certain shape and style of crop.

Also, he may just need to be posted longer. Depending on the thickness and heaviness of the ear leather, it can take longer for the ears to stand. Since the other ear seems to be up, I would be really diligent in continuing to post. I'd probably also put him on the Ester C supplement, if it were me, and possibly some glucosamine/chondrotin to see if that helped.

What MC said. ^^^^

Most folks post through teething. I posted my youngest until about 8 months. Still, there are many folks here who have posted for well over a year.

There is one member here, who posted for over two years. You can find one of her comments about the subject here: https://www.dobermantalk.com/ear-crop...scle-ears.html

Look for the comments by Cressrb. Comment #5

Keep posting!

Thank you for moving the post and your reply. I think he may have been the runt of the litter and also did not get the best puppy care. But it is what it is. The leather on the ear feels thin to me but I am no expert. As long as there is hope I will keep posting him.

So... Looking at this pic, I think that I would move to backer rod as a post. I would also add a light layer of tape at the base of the ear, making sure that the natural fold (inside front) is maintained.

Both of these suggestions will, IMO, give the ear more support.

Another thing.... You say you got Beau at 6 months. Do you know at what age his ears were cropped? Also do you know how fastidious they were about posting?

Also, are you sure about his age?

The reason that I ask is that all these things can come into play with respect to the length of time that it takes a pup's ears to stand reliably.

The bottom line: I think that if you continue to post, at some point Beau's right ear will stand as well as his left one.

Best to you

Ditto what 4x4 bike (AKA John) just said--I'd start posting that right ear with backing rod--and I would also tape down to at least head level. Also I wouldn't leave the ear unposted until it starts to droop--clean it up, let it dry and repost.

10 months is way too young to give up. One of my dogs had very nearly completed his championship before one of his ears stood. It was posted all the time--when he went to a show I took that ear down just before his class came up and it was reposted as soon as he was out of the ring for the last time.

That one ear was probably posted until he was over 18 months old. Good luck...

Thank you for reading and the encouragement as well as advice. I don't know when he was cropped and I don't think they were fastidious about posting. When I first saw him his ear was held up by black duck tape. An attempt at minimizing the look of a floppy ear. I am sure about his age in as much as I was not lied too. He is registered but now I am starting to question lots of things. I consider him my expensive rescue. He is the challenging dog that in some other hands might end up in a rescue shelter in a couple of year. Don't worry he won't. I knew when I bought him that I should run away but did not. I rescued him by skipping a step and a couple of bad years for him. He has his sweet moments and I love him.

I will use the rod method in a couple of days. Right now he is in a cone. Was neutered day before. I have also ordered ester C as recommended earlier.

I just had him neutered and I don't intend to show but I like a good looking dobe. I will probably do some freestyle. I would consider obedience trials but cannot run. I contacted AKC there is no accommodation for a slightly handicapped owner. He is doing well but we are a long way from there. Just fun getting there one step at a time. His prey drive is beyond belief and I'm having a bit of a time with the squirrels.

You can still compete, if you want. You might lose points for not showing a noticeable change of pace, but that's the worst that would happen.

For obedience, check into the Companion Dog Sports Program (CDSP). It is VERY dog and people friendly, so I suspect there would be accommodation for your inability to run. I'd certainly look into it if it's offered anywhere near you!
