Attention - Password and Security Update

Hey all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

All security risks come from outside the threatened security system of a community. The message above seems to be soft-pedaling a breach of security that may have compromised member accounts here. IS that the real story?

IF NOT, EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO CAUSE A RESET OF MY PASSWORD? Please do not disseminate and simply state the facts. We have a right to know if our individual accounts were exposed in any way.

Hey Guys,

I just want to post here to shed a little more light on the situation, at least as much as we can provide at the moment.

A 3rd party plugin that we and other networks use had it's developers' compromised. Their DB was breached and data was scraped. I can't ID the plugin as it's under legal investigation. However I can say that it had access to user data because it functions separately from the vb software. Many plugins do this, chats, news letters, mobile apps etc. This is not an active breach, however as a precaution we did initiate security updates including password changes and new pass requirements.

Their system was compromised and they grabbed user data for us and thousands of others.
We cleared our part of the breach and went this route to further security.
This is also in place as many members on the internet use the same or similar passwords across all things they use.

Hackers who have access to these accounts, may be able to access other platforms where the same email and/or passwords are used.
Other platforms have been compromised as well, including Twitter, Linkedin etc. We are just trying to get ahead of this, and nip it in the bud as soon as possible.

We cannot go into detail at the moment as it is being dealt with on a legal level.

Though this breech happened in Feb, we were not notified until very recently. We worked hard to find a solution for this mess, and acted on it. Though it may not be ideal in some eyes, it is the best we have access to ATM.
Once the storm settles we may look into other methods for our security, but right now we ask that you be patient with us.

As for us not responding to members, you have to understand our community support team watches over many sites. Luckily this week and last, we have had many members from other teams offer help. With that said all emails sent to our Contact Us email will be dealt with. Granted, it may take a little time for us to get to all of them, but please be patient with us as we are working really hard to catch up and help everyone.

If there are any other questions/concerns/feedback, please feel free to post them here.

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

Richard.

I've sent a couple of emails as I was having issues with being able to use the new password, I think I got it ironed out now, hopefully anyway!

Thanks for catching this and doing your best to protect private info, I appreciate it!

After about a million tries to use the new password you sent out (which didn't work) and three e-mails for help in resolving this so that I could once again sign in I finally got one of the forewarded passwords to actually function.

Everytime I've had to try to get and use a new password it has been so a BIG HUGE DEAL that it makes me want to bang my head on the nearest wall--this time was no exception. So there are three requests for help from me but I've finally solved the problem myself.

Just for informations sake--I think your direction leave something to be desired and on that note--the last time I had to try to get a new password for DT and this time I found that in spite of the fact that I had the new password--if I tried to use it within 24 hours of the time it was issued I ended up in that cycle of "you have entered an invalid user name or password..." Give you five chances to get it right and then won't let you try again for 15 minutes which wouldn't be a big deal in and of itself but both times I've had reset passwords the only way I finally got signed back in was entirely by accident.

It may be that the 24 hour deal is something to do with my service--I don't know--but this has sure been frustrating.

Once again I am going crazy trying to figure out WHY I'm having so much trouble with passwords!!!!

About a week ago my password (from a reset last year--see my whiney post from 7/1/2016) suddenly didn't work. And I was having problems trying to reset it. So I thought that maybe I didn't understand the initial "you have to change your password" deal and I had to change it yearly or something. So after I basically spent two days (off and on) trying to reset a new password I was successful and for about a week the new password was working fine.

Up until yesterday. Today I find that I can't sign in--try to go to registration page finally because I clearly am going to have to rest the password had to do this three or four days ago too--that time I remembered to check the remember password box and didn't have to sign back in every time--so it worked for a few days.

But now I signed back in--didn't work. Do I have to change the password again--drives me crazy to have to do stuff like this I'm dial-up an it's just so time consuming. Am I doing something wrong or ???????

I guess I'll go try again

LOL bug... I had the same issue when I re-upped my OS to Sierra. They sent me several new passwords and finally the one that worked was my old one! That was on Safari. I still can't get Google Chrome to recognize me on DT with any of the passwords.

No wonder I have problems with pass words. I obviously am not up to date on anything. I thought ATM was a machine you got money out of. Now I not only have to figure out pass words but I have to learn computer English.

Hey guys,

If you haven't changed your password in 365 days the system will prompt you to do it. If you don't want to go through the hassle, you can send this account a PM and we can manually do it for you.

Nial,

The system didn't prompt me to change my password. What happened was that I suddenly couldn't sign in. That was the beginning of July (which was a year after the last time I had to change my password)--I tried changing it two or three times and finally went back to the old password because none of the new ones worked and the old one worked--but I had to keep signing in daily. Eventually I realized that the remember me box wasn't checked and fixed that so now it is working.

Which account am I supposed to send a PM to? What do you do then, send me a message with the new password?

And why is there that emoji with the sign that says I'm about to be banned? Why would I be banned?

Hey dobebug,

Niall meant you could send us a PM (to this account 'doberadmin') with the password you wish to change your account to.
Where do you see the emoji with the sign that says you're about to be banned? Can you send us a screenshot?

Edit - nevermind, I realized that emoji is in our signature. That doesn't mean you specifically are about to be banned, don't think anything of it.

Thanks,
Natalie

Having an awful time signing in. Can't tell you how many times I have tried to change my password because the old one is not valid, I guess. So, a brief, 'Hi' and maybe another goodbye as I sign out as that is how it has been working. Not sure I can put up with it much longer as it has been a real fight. Not happy.

Whew, I was able to use the temp. password you sent today and then successfully change it to my own password. Thank you. What a struggle. I just hope it lets me use that password when I access tomorrow. Thank you for you patence in working through this.
