MJ, I just visited your website and saw the pictures of Gabe. I can't believe the shape he was in! It just makes me sick. I am looking forward to seeing some recent pics of him. It looks like he really prospered in your care.

First I will tell Phoebe's story.........

We had loaded up to go to the next town over, mall, dinner & movie was on the agenda for that day. (Family night out)

We drove past the Humane Society and I asked my husband if we could just go in and look around. He did the eye roll, but turned around and went back. We walked up and down the isles looking at dogs & commenting on the names posted, and of course stopped to look at all the little pups that were available. They had several choices that would suit our family.......but there was one isle we hadn't been down yet so we walking down that one. My oldest son, age 10 (now turning 18 this fall) went directly to a cage with a black and white dog, the name posted on her cage was Gazzelle.

She came forward and sat there very nicely starring at us all starring at her. We started on to the next cage and Gazzelle started to bark.........we went back and she stopped and brushed the floor with her tail as she sat there. Again we started to leave and she started to bark. Each time, the same thing........it sort of turned into a game.

My husband suggested looking again at the younger pups, this girl was about 8 months old and could be harder to train. But she had won me and the kids over.........you could tell by the look in her eyes that she ADORED the kids and it was them she wanted.

We went up and got more information on her..........Owner surrender, too much trouble to keep..........won't listen.........blah blah blah. She had been there awhile with nobody interested.

We filled out the papers and were approved two days later........then she went in to be spayed, we picked her up on the third day. Kevin was at work, but the kids came with me..........on the way home they named her Phoebe Freckles because she has little black spots on her legs.

The first few months were not the best...........you could tell that she had been mistreated, probably even smacked around. She was hand shy and would "duck" when an adult went to pet her.............but not the kids, she would roll with them, jump, lick, just be a regular puppy.

She never had an accident in the house.........but she dug up the flowers, she chewed up everything in sight.......in the house and out! But she was such a good friend to the kids that we kept plugging away at her training.

That was 7 years ago this past May, she is and has been the best dog for any kid alive............there is NOTHING any kid could EVER do to make this girl even have a bad thought towards them, if a gang of kids wanted to rob us blind..........she would help them load it up and pack it out

This is her...................

Angie

Now I will tell Orson's..............

Orson is a different sort of Rescue story, he didn't come from a shelter or organization of any type.........but he was definitely rescued.

I have a friend that lives a few hours away. We don't get to see each other much, but we talk on the phone alot. Well during one of our phone conversations she tells me about the doberman pups next door, how her neighbor didn't know a thing about what he was doing, the pups were out in the kennel all day long........and this is the end of April beginning of May in Indiana! In other words.........COLD and raining most of the time.

I tell her I didn't want to know about it.........it made me upset. She knows all about my doberboy, we go way back.......she was around before he passed on.

Anyway, that phone call ended..........weeks later she brings up the subject again and tells me about the situation. All the pups have been sold.........except ONE. I tell her I didn't want to hear about it..........but she says I do. She says that the one that is left is being neglected in her book, it is all alone in the kennel, the mom & dad are in a seperated part of the kennel.........the pup cries all the time. People come to see it but leave with out taking the pup. She says she hasn't seen the pup let out of the kennel in a long time.

I tell her to call AC or Humane society or somebody. She says she doesn't want Neighbor problems.........the mom and dad look fine, and she doubts AC would do anything just because the pup is left in the kennel or cries **sigh**

This is the end of June and it had been awhile since we had gotten together. I tell her I would come for a visit and see the dog myself......if he was still there the next week (right after 4th of July) I figured this would quiet her down on the subject and the pup would be sold by then anyway.

Well I drive down like I promised, it was July 5th.........low and behold, she says the pup has NOT been taken. She also said he doesn't cry nearly as much as he used to. We decided to get the puppy thing over with right away before we enjoyed our visit. We walked over and knocked on the door..........he came out and she explained that I wanted to see the pup he had. He didn't look to enthused to show it to us.......but he walked us to the back yard. The first thing I noticed was a big red boy, he was a nice looking dog........nothing spectacular, but nice. The female was also in good shape. She was black. Then my eyes fell to the pup in question. OMG, I wanted to cry.........I nearly did. He was so sickly looking, I could see why he didn't cry as much as he used to. He could barely hold his little head up. He didn't even get excited to see people coming out there.......Good lord, have you ever seen an 11 week old pup that didn't get excited to see people coming to the kennel??..........He was just to weak to care.

I know the guy could see the look on my face...........I wanted to cuss him out and burst out crying at the same time. The only thing stopping me was the lump in my throat. The guy started in explaining how this was the RUNT of the litter.........he had always been sickly, blah blah blah! My friend asked him if the pup had seen a Vet lately, the guy said no he couldn't afford it. COULDN'T AFFORD IT!! Son of a...............He could afford to breed his dogs, he could afford to sell the other pups.........but he couldn't afford to take what he called the runt to the vet!! I don't even want to know how the tails were docked or dew claws removed..........I just wanted to puke.

I told him I was taking that pup to the Vet right now. He said that was fine, he was probably gonna die anyway, that is how it was with RUNTS.................take the pup "NO CHARGE" he would even give me the "papers" on him.......Well that made it all better now didn't it?? UGH!!
I didn't want to make a scene because my friend would still be there after I was gone, but I was very hateful to him nontheless.....I couldn't help it. I still wanted to call AC or someone........but I just didn't know what to do or how to do it. I really had never been in that situation before in my life.

Anyway.........I didn't get to visit with my friend........I drove the pup all the way home, the Vet was closed, but I took him in first thing the next morning without evening calling ahead. He was 11 weeks old and weighed a whopping 10 point something pounds!! All you dobe people out there know how ridiculous that is...............a week shy of 3 months and only 10 pounds!! He was filled with worms and undernourished. He was covered in fleas........and smelled foul.

Here is a picture right after the Vet appointment.........I wanted to document it just in case I figured out what I should do about the jerk who had him.

Look at his little hip bones, and back legs...................

I just wanted to get him well and find him a good home. Really that was the plan........but it flew out the window as soon as he started feeling better and doing doberman antics!

He wasn't cropped until he was about 4 1/2 months old due to getting over his "being a runt" which translates into "being bred by an irresponsible jerk"

This is him now, 27 1/2 inches tall and 73 lbs.................And this is what he says to the jerk that would have let him die....................

What a sad story before you got him. Thank God you have him. Doodle is lucky a real dog lover found him. Thank you all for sharing about your rescues.

I agree Madam........I have loved reading everyone's story too, and twice at that

I think any person that has ever rescued would say how lucky WE are to have found these guys/girls...........they are a treasure to say the least. They truly do give us more than we could ever give to them.

Well, I had put this together so it would be posted as his bio for the silly DT presidential election thingie, but somehow it never did get posted after I sent it in. Sebastian doesnt quite qualify as an official "rescue" but because of him, I will always own a Doberman and because of DT, I will always adopt or rescue.

Sebastian
Sebastianos (Greek) – Venerable, to be revered

Sebastian and I met completely by “accident” on the night of Dec 23rd 2004. A few of my employees had not shown up for work that day so I was stuck working over 12 hours. I was out on a final delivery that happened to be to a pet supply store, doubling as a kind of animal shelter. At the time I wanted another dog to keep my mixed breed girl Tori company, so I asked about their dogs. Expecting to be taken into the room where I had seen a bunch of them in crates, they instead led me back outside in the cold to a corner of the property. There I met my beloved Sebastian for the first time – alone, chained up, cold, skinny, covered in fleas and with a terrible case of ear mites.
He looked so incredibly down and depressed and clearly longing for attention. As I was asking questions, I began to pet him. At that point, he leaned gently into me and rested his head on my leg - and I had no more questions. I knew all I needed to know.

The next morning when I picked him up - Christmas Eve
(THIS IS NO PLACE FOR A DOBERMAN!!!)

I couldn’t take him right then because it was very late and I was still working. So, I picked him up the next morning, Christmas Eve, and brought him in from the cold and loneliness – just before it began to rain. As he and Tori met, instantly his whole demeanor changed. Although she was a bit wary and it took her a while to adjust, he was crazy for her immediately. Eventually she too came around, but he practically worshipped her until she died almost two years later. Tomorrow, Nov 20th will be the second anniversary of her death.

Tori and Sebastian

As for he and I, well, I had never experienced such an interesting animal. He followed me everywhere, insisted on physically touching me in some way at all times, had more energy than I have ever seen in a dog and had the habit of “singing” when he wanted something. If Tori had a toy he wanted, he would politely wait, but would whine-sing non-stop. If he wanted to play or lay next to me and I did not respond immediately, he would start singing again.

Along with other very unique behaviors, I was quite wide-eyed and unsure about what I was dealing with. I decided to Google “Doberman” and that is when everything changed. What I had considered to be bizarre quirks resulting from his abandonment or possible mistreatment, turned out to be traits of the most incredible breed in the world. I remember spending several hours that first night, reading and learning all of these fascinating things about the Doberman – the history, the mindset, the design and purpose of the breed. In addition, I began to change my routines and priorities to meet his needs appropriately. What had already been the most rapid bonding I had ever experienced with any dog, grew into an immense respect as well. That night, in honor of my new amazing dog and the Doberman breed itself, I named him “Sebastian”. Needless to say, nothing has been the same since, and I will always have a Doberman in my life as long as I live.
Sebastian found me that night. I tend not to believe in “accidents” and my experience with him has solidified that. Our bond is like none I have ever had with any other animal and his affection and devotion still keep me in awe to this day. He is short for a Doberman male but still carries himself with the pride, protective courage and strength befitting his regal heritage. I thank God for him all the time and do all I can to give him back the boundless joy and endless love that he has brought to our home.

Avalon-
thanks so much for that story, and the accompanying photos. How sad to see him chained like that, and hearing about him leaning his head on you got me all misty.

i went to a aquiantance's house and was invited to a party. So i desided to go,and we arrived in the eve.the friends friend was a girl named kristine, and her current boyfriend, titus. they were hosting the party. they had 2 dogs, both dobermans. one was a girl named damage and the other was kane.I noted the dogs and went to sit down, damage came over to me,she was underweight, had a broken muzzle and a dry cracked nose.I noted that also. then i saw kane, from a distance not close enuff to see how bad he was.he just peed on the hallway floor.titus grabbed him and beat him with a broomhandle and shoved him to the floor, then threw him in the basement.I asked kristine why he was being so rough with kane, she said''hes teaching him a lesson'' I was upset about this but didnt want to confront titus, after being so hostile with kane. later at the party the subject came to dogs. I stated i had a pit mix, named domer. and that he recently died of cancer, etc. titus said ''did you fight your pit??'' i stated ''no he was just a pet'' and he said ''i used to fight pitbulls'' i said ''oh thats nice''(downplaying his comments, figuring he was being macho and lying about it) then someone said ''where's jynx''??? ''he died 2 weeks ago.he got hurt'' my stomach sank, did he sick his pits on jynx? kane meanwhile was attempting to get back upstairs from the cellar,by scratching at the door. ''that damn dog wants up'' so titus let him up,hit him again with the broomstick, laughed and thought it would be amusing to use damage and kane as target practice for his bb gun. so he shot them. i said ''why the f**k are you doing that!!'' he just wont listen, and its funny'' i said ''let me have the bb gun'' he declined. so i grabbed it,and he tryed,in vain to keep the gun,i won the possession of the bb rifle, cocked it and shot him in his bare foot, his ass,and he ran screaming and hid. i bent the rifle barrel to disable it.(aluminum barrels bend easily) i said to kristine, do you want this dog, being hes so unmanagable?? she said ''no, why do you want him?'' i sad ''yes i will take him'' she said 'well then hes your problem'' and gave me kane.

kane came home with us. he was terrified, and VERY underweight. i called the vet and sought advise, and made an appointment for him to be seen the next day.i explained what happened, and he stated i needed to call animal control on his former owners.( i planned to,but i wanted to know how bad off he was first) he weighed 38lbs and he was 10-11 months old,the vet noted his mangled tail, his lack of coat, and his general ill health. he wanted to know if i wanted to ''try'' or ''pts'',i said i want to try to save him. he was given another appointment for his vaccines, because he was too sick to get them, and i was given a strict feeding regimin.he did need a few hours of IV fliuds, and he got them.
i called my local animal officer, who came out to see kane and he left in tears and was fit to be tied.He said ''dont give that dog back to them no matter what, and take good care of him" i said 'i wouldnt dare give him up' later,i recieved a call for the adress of the owners of kane and damage,i gave him the adress and phone number. i recieved a threatening call from titus 2 days later, ''im coming for my dog, i cant believe you called animal control on us! we gave you a $1500 dollar dog.he was in fine shape. im coming to get my dog!'' and hung up. i though he may have been shooting off his mouth. he wasnt. later that evening, kane went nuts at the front door, i heard my door being forced,i called police and hid kane upstairs,i grabbed my sword, and yelled ''i called the cops, get the f**k of my porch,or they'll find your dead bodies!'' i heard 2 sets of feet run like heck off the porch.the police confermed a break in was attempted, and wrote it up along with the threat from kanes owner.it turned into a court case, seizure of his other dobe, and a big mess.
that was a year and a half ago, kane now weighs 97lbs,looks and acts so much better, has been neutered, spoiled and has returned the favor that started our friendship, saving a life. last december,i was going into shock from my overly high insulin levels/hypoglycemia and kane kept me awake by rolling on me and licking me,and got my wife, before i went into a coma. i was semiconsious/unconsious,and she was able to bring my blood sugar up enuff to help me,and get me to the hospital.when i seizured out of low sugars,he sat with me,sometimes able to 'alert' me my sugars were dropping before i seizured, and helped me get to a seated position,so i could get sugar in me in time.hes been my best buddy, and doggy soul mate, since day one. i really think i wouldnt be here,if it wasnt for kane.i would have died from low blood sugar, before my wife found me,if it werent for him.
granted, hes still a work in progress, but hes come so far.he was very food/toy agressive, starving, beaten, scared and hurt dog when i met him.hes now my dober angel. hes no longer food & toy agressive, very social, loves to be loved, spoiled doberman that he deserves to be. he had his first dress up halloween this year and enjoyed it. hes got alot to live for now,and i have the best, silly and frustrating, buddy ever.love ya kane bane!

Prophecy - I can't believe.... really can't believe that people can treat their animals this way I truly astounds me. The lack of empathy is terrifying. And to witness it... I am so happy you shot that guy in the ass, and that you took it all the way to court. That guy is sick - imagine what he would do to a potential child. Gross.

I am so happy you went over there and saved both Kane and Damage.

I adopted my Rex 3 years ago, when he was 2 years old, from DAR&E in Virginia. I had been dogless for about a year after the loss of a wonderful trio of dogs.

I had lost my show/obedience Doberman girl of cardio at age 6 1/2 which absolutely broke my heart, then lost her 1/2 sister at age 10 to cancer, then my Chessie soon after to bone cancer. After saying goodbye to 3 dogs in a 2 year period I just needed time to grieve. My cats enjoyed the full reign of the house for the first time ever, we took vacations without worrying about our babies in a kennel, etc. But as time went on the loneliness of life without a dog became too hard...I contacted rescue and had an interview, yard check, etc to get the ball rolling on adopting a new Doberman.

About a month later, I made the drive to a vet clinic about 45 minutes away where Rex was being housed with about 5-6 other male Dobes. There was no room in foster homes for these boys, so Rex had been neutered and microchipped at this vet clinic and was living there until adopted. His original family turned him in ( a young couple with a toddler and a townhouse yard for him). Rex was too energetic and large for them in their small space. I think he was not really abused but suffered benign neglect as he had no idea what a crate was, a dog bed, a walk around the neighborhood, etc.

Anyway, I walked to the back and all the dogs were barking. We got Rexy out and he zoomed around the kennel area and then out to the big play yard out back. He loved to chase and grab a fluffy toy and bring it back to you. The tech left us alone to get to know each other and I walked with Rexy thoughout the yard. Even though he was full of energy he never once jumped up on me and as I bent down to give him a treat and pat him...he reached up and gave me a lick on my earlobe as if to say "hello, I like you."
I brought him back inside and said I'd sleep on it before making a decision; of course, I could hardly sleep and came back the next day to pick him up. It was actually hard to drive home with him without crying, because I felt like I was saying a final goodbye to my other three.
Rex was very stressed the first few weeks we had him; he'd never slept inside, barked all night at the slightest sound, could not be left with anything in a room if you left (he chewed up remote controls, my glasses, hand cream, chapstick, a box of kleenex...just from me leaving the first day to get some laundry!) We made a dog kennel out of a huge bathroom and left nothing with him..... he tore the towel racks off the wall to sleep on the towels and shredded the curtains on the window in a million vertical strips! He went berserk in a crate so the bathroom became his "crate" for about 6 months.

Life went on and Rexy became adjusted to us and going to the barn, having daily walks, basic obedience, etc. Once we moved to Georgia I started competition obedience classes and rest is history. He thrived with the work, and I love obedience......my rescue boy is well on his way to being my first Utility dog!

Rescue Rex CDX,WAC,CGC really rescued me. I owe him more than than I can type.

avalonandon,

My story is somewhat similar. I had never considered a doberman before until one day I was at my parent's home and saw a red doberman next door. I said to my mom "great...just what you need a dobie next door." My mom said actually she is a very nice dog. She told me that his owner had left the state because there was a warrant for his arrest. His mom, who lived next door, was taking care of her. She felt bad for the dobe because the woman would beat her with a broom and did not want her.

I went over and offered to find her a home. I just had to get her out of there. The greedy woman wanted $200 so I gave it to her and brought the dog home. Within 24 hours she won our hearts and my husband told me there was no way she was leaving. We had fell under the doberman's spell.

Her name was Chocktaw. Apparently the previous owner was into the indians. We called her Chucky for short. She lived to 15 1/2. She inspired us to have two more dobermans with the third being our current, a fawn named Copper.

Copper came from a very generous lab rescue. He had been moved around from family member to family member about 4 times and then lived at a vet office for 2 months. I think this is the reason why he totally stresses out in a crate. He is in his FOREVER home now. Rescuing is so rewarding.

Thanks, Lindsey! Rexy says "yum, yum!" We'll hide the treats from Cheers, that piglet.

I've owned 8 Dobermans over a 30 yr period and Rex is my husband's absolute favorite. I got CD titles on a couple of my other Dobes, but Rexy just particularly enjoys obedience work. He never gets bored....of course, I use clicker and food rewards.
