Introducing Bigwig!

We picked up Boss on Friday. We did change his name to Bigwig. Same idea as Boss and it's another "B" sound. And yes, It's Bigwig from Watership Down. It's one of our favorite books. He is a very nice guy but he does have some issues with being left alone. He is created when we are not home and we have asked the neighbors about barking. He as been quite so far...we live in a townhouse. He is huge! 100 pounds but walks pretty well on the leash. He did get a pretty serious bite from another dog about 4 months ago....so he has little interest in other dogs. He does not bark....just ignores them. He is a typical dobber boy. I think he is going to be a good fit for us.

Question....How can we get him to poop on the leash? Not an issue now but when we go on a trip...that could be an issue.

BigWig just won the Doberman Lottery ticket, of Life...so very happy for you blueberry.
- beautiful of a big boy, and so well adjusted on the couch

Beau baby talks, "lets go pee-pee, or Kelly Poo-Poo"...repeated over and over, like a broken record.
- but she is off leash, 99.9% of the time
- even today, when we went to the vets / so dad puts on her collar

Now she knows, she could be in my 4Runner...for 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
- so she is conditioned for a quick pee or poo...when dad says, Kelly truck ride"
- took her only 2 minutes to do her business, and next she hopped into my 4x4
- when we travel as a family, mom stays in the house...while dad talks his magic
- it works every time
- on the rare occasion, after 5 minutes...she won't have to go

And you can tell watching them, if they are looking for a favorite potty spot...or just not interested, and the job can wait.

No topknot? Or does he have a bump that is all bone (ie is he boneheaded?)

But I do foresee a new nickname showing up--"Wig Wig". Or maybe even "Biggie Wiggie".

He's a handsome boy.

Well.....he got out the front door the other day! Bob came home and closed the front for (we have a lever door knob) and Bigwig opened the door and went for a stroll....well a run is more like it! Bob took off after him but Bigwig can run. Bob returned and got the car and once he saw the car he came running back. He did not get too far away....just to the next court but wow that was scary! So now we lock the dead bolt at all times. We are installing a heavy duty storm door this weekend! I've only had one other time a dog has ran....it's one of my fears.

Other than that....he's great!

We only use the 2 back doors - which are in the fenced in area to go in and out . We don't even let people in the front .

Now Kasia was a master at letting herself in and out of the interior doors that have the same handles as Blue - the ones that stick out to the side , she would use her nose and lift the handle up and use her paw to push the door open .

Cool

Great that pup did not get to far ......I was taught this by my first trainer...he would say to our class over and over again.....if your pup demonstates a negative behavior.......not OK...... and you deal with it......if dog performs the same behavior again and is successful again........twice can easily become a dogs habit.......

I've experienced dogs that escaped out doors as it was opened......real PITA......but for the dog it was "game on"..............being chased ........getting treats as dog was being lured back home........funny now....but not back then.

Looking forward to more PIC's !!!

Hoss

Funny how attitudes change as we "grow up"

My first dobe Caesar had the bad habit of rushing open doors and zooming off (what can I say..I was young then and didn't know how to fix it). One time I saw a UPS driver heading up the driveway and opened my door to greet him. Caesar rushed out the door toward him at full speed. The driver just about had a heart attack....and then Caesar zoomed on past him and disappeared into the distance. The poor driver just stood there in the driveway gasping for breath.

Profuse apologies ensued, but secretly inside, I thought it was rather funny...back then.

Now, I dunno...

ECIN, we have a grill mounted on the lower part of our sliding glass door screen--it doesn't mess up our view, but it does give the dogs a sense of a barrier. We put it up after Capri blew through the screen one day (which we were able to straighten, at least, but it was never QUITE the same) and even she respected it after that. I don't know if it would work for your particular misbehaver but if you really like to have the light coming in that glass door, something like that might be worth it.

Bigwig has not escaped again! We ave very cautious of the door being deadlock! The storm door will be put up soon. However, on Saturday he got into the trash and swallowed some soft plastic If it was anything big or sharp we would have went straight to the emergency vet. We induced vomiting and he returned it to the yard. Bob was standing right there and grabbed it....he was trying to re claim it! We watched him for any signs of an obstruction and checked his poop for a few days and he's fine. Nothing came out in his poop...so I guess we caught it in time. He is pooping on the leash now

I have never had a dog at 5 get into so much trouble! He is finally start to relax. We are very happy with him.

WHY do you want him to poop on a leash??? now your hands are all in the poop...lol All funny's aside.. Repetition..Repetition..Repetition. PATIENCE..PATIENCE..PATIENCE About 10-15 minutes after he eats take him outside on a leash to where you want him to poop. If he does relieve himself, back in the house to his crate..10-15 later, take him back out again. If no results repeat process until he relieves himself. Make a BIG deal out of it...lots and lots of praise.. Repeat this process until you take him right to that spot and he relieves him within minutes...
