Sunking Doberman Needs a Home

Apologies in advance if this is not the right forum for this, as this isn’t really a rescue, so please move if there is a more appropriately section.

Judy King of Sunking Dobermans in Central Texas is getting one of her dogs back. He just turned 1 in September. His owner has enlisted in the military and can no longer keep him.

I have had an excellent relationship with Judy since purchasing my girl from her and have kept in constant contact since. I lost my girl in August (no genetic issues, just a freak thing...you can read all about it in my forum post) and Judy was really hoping my family would be open to adding another dobe. Sadly, we just can’t. Our hearts were shattered into a bazillion pieces and we just aren’t ready for another dobe.

This is an awesome chance to get a beautifully bred dog with an outstanding temperament, and a breeder friend for life. I’m told he is happy-go-lucky, affectionate, good with calm-natured cats, and sleeps in a crate at night.

Please let me know if you are interested in talking to Judy and learning more about him! I’d be happy to she her contact information privately.

Registered name is Sunking’s Thunder Rolls. Call name is “Brooks”.

Hilary --- I totally understand where you are coming from -- As we have been there too - I know its only been a few months - yet years ago - we lost a great female named Chi - we had just moved into our new house we built - then one day - I found her in the yard - she just died there - broke our hearts - we just could not get over it - One Sunday afternoon - my wife came running out to my office - she had the Sunday Star add section and read - Doberman puppies for sale - beautiful -- She then asked - what do you think ? I said Hun - If we go up there ( They were In Noblesville IN ) I said we will come home with one - ( Chi had been gone 9 years ) So ole Doc here made the call - after a nice talk with the breeder , she said they were all there - we would have pick of the littler ! I said it will take us a good hour to get there and I have cash - were on our way . I had the big tires on that Chevy humming all the way up there - sure enough - pulled in and they were waiting on us - lol Wife climbed the fence and was sitting on the ground with all these puppies , all trying to get up on her lap - it was a thing of beauty - then there was this one little gal - sitting there looking so proud ! A beautiful Black and Tan female - She looked just like one of them Doberman statues - the one where there front legs are forward - head up - looking forward - I feel in love right there . Wife asked if I was going to climb over and play with the pup's - I pointed over to the left and said there she it right there - Wife came over and said Ken - She is Beautiful ! Guess who came home with us ??? lol Yep her name was to be Kasia - a few weeks later - We had the little girl out here in the office - she was sitting on my wife's lap - She was petting her so softly and then she looked at me and said Ken - what were we thinking ? waiting this long ? I knew and she did to - we were heart broken and wouldn't get over it - we were scared to , the thought of going threw that ever again - Well Kasia girl lived to be dang near 15 - That was the toughest things I ever did - the last walk - carrying her one last time - Someone on here - and I wish I had wrote it down - it was so true - but it went something like when we lose one of our dogs - they take a piece of our hearts with them - But a new puppy puts a new piece of heart back - I thought about that and it is so true - It was about 3 months after Kasia passed and I got a great tip on a unannounced litter on Black and Tans coming in May - My wife said I was rushing it - But I filled all the app paper work - Talked the breeder and then one night - I got a call - It was Cindy - She said we got a pup ! We made the trip down to Louisville and picked up our new little mess ! We never tried to replace Kasia - yet - The little feller sure did helped to make my heart whole again .

Sorry to be posting up this long winded story about us - But I just wanted you - our Dobermann friend that -- don't be afraid to do it again - And as I said - that little puppy sure helped us out in our time of need , Hope this story helps you a little as I sure do miss you posting stories on here .

Best of luck Hilary !

One last thing - have you thought about a meet and greet with the Doberman in need ?

Ken

Ah, thanks you guys!!!! It’s good to hear from everybody.

We actually have a deposit down on an expected litter now. It is a breed I have been interested in for years (Pharaoh Hounds) and I have developed a relationship with the breeder after first meeting him years ago at a show. When Judy reached out to me about her dober-boy, it threw all these plans for a loop, though. I debated for a couple of weeks on whether or not to let the deposit go. I’ve run thru all the pros/cons. We’ve gone back and forth as a family. We are not even sure yet if the breeding took, so there may not even be puppies. We won’t know for another couple of weeks.

I know if I brought this boy home I would fall deeply in love with him. Heck, I know if I just go for a meet & greet I’ll fall in love with him. But I sort of had my heart set on a PH and having our hearts so severed by a dobe we weren’t sure if we wanted to take on another one. It’s not rational, just feelings, which are hard to explain.

My breeder was so sad when I told her we were passing on Brooks, so I’m completely invested in finding a great home for him now. That’s the only thing that will help me sleep at night, otherwise I’ll just torture myself.

If you or Judy have Facebook you could post him in the "doberman pinscher breeder listings" page. I've seen a fair number of breeders rehome older puppies and adults there. Good luck!

I'm sure it's probably been posted on here many times, but I'm really new to this forum so I'm going to take a chance on repeating. One doberman is good, but in our experience, it's definitely like having one child...more is better. Dobermans are pretty high energy dogs, and our puppies have always taken easily 18 months before their brains became fully functional, they were usually bundles of fur and instinct before that. We've had two dobermans that we raised as puppies, and our second one Cayenne was sooo much happier when we got a second doberman. We went from feeling like the neurotic Weimaraner couple from the movie Best in Show obsessing over every behavior to normal dog owners because she had another outlet for her energy. She still got into just as much trouble, but there was plausible deniability because it COULD have been the second dog. Final comment: Finances may be a finite amount, but love isn't. We're back to being a two dobie household as of last week and it would just be cruel to relocate a Texan dog to Saskatchewan or we'd be asking for pics. I'll also mention that there's kijiji postings for Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta for people seeking dobermans.

Hi Saskdobie! Welcome to the fourm!

So glad you are enjoying your multi-dobe household, I totally envy you. I agree, flying a pup from Texas to Saskatchewan would not make sense. I also wanted to add, if you were in the market to add to your family, sites like kijiji are notorious for selling puppy mill or backyard bred dogs. I'm sure there are far more legit breeders in the area.

I don't think you're really looking for another doberman, but you can never be warned too soon to avoid kijiji all together.

We actually just got our replacement dobie (pic at left) from Olivia Harvey from RM Dobermans through Kijiji and are pretty happy to date, we didn't really want another puppy, we're getting a little long in the tooth, and Olivia was advertising a trained 2 year old with a calm temperament which she delivered. But I mostly mentioned Kijiji because there's at least 3 households posted there as WANTING, not selling, dobermans. The downside is that if they're posting on Kijiji, they may just be hoping to "get a bargain" on a dog since there are plenty of puppies advertised and no real reason that you couldn't get a puppy with minimal effort. So I'm kind of thinking they're hoping reputable breeders will reach out to them, which unfortunately indicates to me that they may not have the wits and energy to actually manage a doberman. It's never a happy household when your dog can outthink you, monkeys should always be at the top of the pecking order.

Woot!!

What a handsome boy.

What a joy for both your family (humans) and the pup. Yeah, as you know 1yo.s are still in serious puppy mode.

What a wonderful holiday gift to all of you.

So.. Is he still "Brooks", or does your daughter get to name him? LOL.

She’s working on her new name list as we speak.

Once we get him settled and have his name all picked out, I’ll give him a proper intro thread.

My heart will be so full having a dobe back in the house.

As much work as they are... I could not live happily without my Dobermans.

(44 years and counting!). I spent the last 2 years with some fairly significant disabilities. My wife of over 4 decades is very often out of town. My Dobe was my support and friend.

My current youngest (4 yo. 87lb. intact male) is known to me as "Baby".

So happy for you!

This makes me so happy. I just felt you both needed each other. Good for Doc for seeing that, too.
He is such a beautiful boy! This just made my evening...

This is an awesome chance to get a beautifully bred dog with an outstanding temperament, and a breeder friend for life. I’m told he is happy-go-lucky, affectionate, good with calm-natured cats, and sleeps in a crate at night.

Hillary- Your last posts in this thread really made us so happy!
Sounds like a Win-Win-Win situation for your family, Judy & your handsome new Doberboy (a.k.a. "Brooks")

Kudos to Ken for planting the trap...errrh...the seed, of the family visit suggestion. Many dogs, especially Dobes, have a way of magically bonding with humans, even when meeting for the first time. I'm finding this out with Spock meeting new students, during his weekly Read With Me school visits.

As far as a new name for you new boy, my DW and I have frequently discussed this subject- what if we were to rename our male & female Dobes?
Some names more appropriate to fit Doberman personalities....

Along a Dr. Suess theme, I suggested "Needy 1" and "Needy 2" for our pair.

Along a Star Trek theme, instead of Spock, new name would be "Clingon" (with a "C", get it?)

Eva's new name could be "T'Pring" who was a real Vulcan Diva, always in control...

Along a Gumby theme, I would go with "Pokey" which perfectly fits Spock or Eva.

And, of course "Velcro" would be a perfect name to fit any Doberman!

Seriously, I'm just having some fun, but I know your family will come up with a perfectly fitting name for your new Dobe.
Looking forward to his into thread and maybe a future play date with our two?

YAY!!

Thank you for all the congratulations! Y'all knew what was good for me before I even did, you stinkin' smart folks, you!

I pick him up this afternoon after work and bring him to his new forever home to meet the rest of his family. I have all the new-mommy nerves of not knowing quite what to expect and knowing the first few weeks or so will be an adjustment period for everyone. I can tell he's already so different than Remy, he doesn't have the same intense energy that she had, but he's a giant love-bug. I am looking forward to seeing his full personality blossom.

Did I mention that he's Remy's nephew??? His mom was her litter mate. So a bit of her blood is with us again (tears).

I promise to give a nice proper intro thread once we have each other all figured out.

I have found, in my limited experience, that the Dober boys are just love bugs and more laid back.
The two girls we have are high energy and can be intense.
I like both attitudes for different reasons, but I really want a male of my own. Duggan belongs to my daughter, heart and soul and lets everyone know it.

Did I say that I so very happy about this ??? If I didn't - I'm so , so happy

I will say one thing - Well - It's more of a confession - Uh - well - Uh - If you go back up and look at the first picture that Hilary put up- The eye's -The ears half down - The unsure look on his face -- I had a good guess that is what Hilary would see

I feel like we got the new puppy !

Hey, you don't have to wait until you have figured each other out. We'd love to be there in the middle of it too, in a vicarious sort of way. It would be like being grandparents...we'd get to share in the fun, but could hand him back to you for things like those midnight bathroom trips outside.
