Hey guys,
I know a few of you are up either in or around NJ - There is a person (actually this message was written by a rescued Pom but he has a human mom :) on myspace that wants to help a Dobe at a shelter there but lives in MA.

Mount Holly, NJ? Dobe needs to be pulled and brought to MA
Body: Hey everyone!

Lou here.....and I need your help. There is a doberman in a pound in NJ who is a nervous wreck that we'd like to possibly take in. Anyone in or near Mount Holly, NJ? If someone could pull him (fees are minimal and would be paid for) then most likely my mom could set up a transport leg operation for him to be brought to Central Mass.
The link to the dobe's page is: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=6614630

Please forward! Thanks,

Louie

tracy - can you have them email me at ksomjen at yahoo dot com?

i can pull the guy, but i need more info, hes not too far from me. where is he going in MA? are they adopting him? this person already has a male pomeranian, and i would not recommend they get a young male doberman.

what experience do these people have with dobes?

Thank you guys for all of your help....I'm waiting to be able to call back the pound now to speak with the animal behaviorist in regards to potential aggression-the secretary didn't know much but thinks he might have been an owner surrender due to aggression, please keep your fingers crossed that it's not that because this dog will then in turn be PTS!

I haven't heard anything from doberkim yet Tracy, but it's okay, I have a few other people who stepped up to the plate and want to help with pull/foster/transport if everything goes ok. I'll be calling back the behaviorist tomorrow with my fingers crossed-he's going to evaluate the dog with food and small male dogs as well.

I have been busy with other things in my life and I am just getting around to my email.

I have to say, I don't think this is a good dog for you - you have small breed male dogs, you have never owned a doberman, and this dog has a history of aggression. Just because the shelter hasn't seen it - if he was SENT to the shelter for it, I would take heed.

A young male doberman is not an easy dog to raise, and I in no way think (even with the best intentions) that this is the right dog for your first doberman.

I think this dog belongs in doberman rescue, to be fully evaluated by people who are most familiar with the breed and able to do what needs to be done for him. I don't feel that sending him to a home that has never handled a doberman, has other male dogs in the household, and is not familiar with dealing with an aggressive dog - is the right home for this doberman. I think its an accident waiting to happen.

If you want a rescue dobe, go talk to Doberman Rescue, Unlimited - they have numerous dobes (40-50) in NH that need homes - they have been fully evaluated, they have been trained, they have been vetted. And they know what they are adopting out. This dog is an unknown, and in your household - that can be very dangerous.

Leigha,
I hate to say that I agree with Kim on this one, but I do. As I told you in my message to you on myspace - male Dobes are notoriously same sex aggressive. They can get along with another male for a period of time and all seems great and right in the world but then something happens and the war is on. I would hate to see anything happen to little Louie, his life has been rough enough so far!
I wish I hadn't gotten caught up in the moment and mentioned this to you before I cross posted and got your hopes up. I'm sorry.
I think your desire to help this poor guy is very admirable and I pray he finds a great home - but I'm afraid that bringing him into your house is really asking for trouble.
Please though keep us updated on your decision and whether or not you rescue him or a Dobergirl from another rescue. From what I've seen of your page and Louie's story, any dog would be lucky to call you Mom :)

I couldn't agree more.

I think a first time doberman owner would be MUCH better served by adopting a dog through rescue. That would allow the rescue volunteers to match them up with the best dog for their abilities and circumstances.

Long distance adoptions can be tricky at the best of times-even as an experienced doberman owner, I wouldn't be willing to take on and make a commitment to a dog i'd never laid eyes on.

Thank you all for your opinions, they mean a lot to me, they definitely do!

Although (with your help from this board) I've decided not to get this dobe, I have been however, checking his status (the least I can do is help get him out of that pound if he has adoption problems)...and great news-he has an approved application on him. :) Thanks again everyone for your advice,

Hey guys!

Kim, I checked out that website....definitely a big fan already! But, here's the great news...

There is a guy in South Shore MA who is looking to find a home for his dobe because he is moving to Florida. She grew up (as a puppy) with chihuahuas (the breeder raised chi's too) and lives with cats at this time. SO...the best of both worlds: she's used to small breed dogs and cats! I am going to see her (and bringing Louie, my smallest pom) on Wednesday, wish me luck! I'll keep you posted, of course.

I'm excited for you Leigha - Make sure keep us updated and post pics soon!!!
But I am disheartened that the guy is getting rid of his dog because he's moving. Sure it's a pain to move with animals (I know, I do it every 2 or 3 years!) but it's no excuse to get rid of them. I do have a feeling though that once this girl walks through your door, she'll be in a forever home :)
How old is she? What color? Name??? :)

Much in agreement Tracy :-( But best wishes to you and your (soon to come) new arrival, I hope all goes smoothly with the introduction of a new pooch.

Still be cautious with your small one (your chi more so then your cats since she is around cats now), my parents dobe was around cats as a pup, but tries to eat my cats at every turn, whereas their small breed dog she is fine with.

Thanks guys. :) She is an 18 month, 75lb doberman, fixed and UTD on all shots. Her name is Miller (that might change though, not a big fan of that name) and is black/tan. We've been searching for a red dobe but if her personality is so accustomed to small dogs AND cats, I don't care if she was an albino, I'd still take her if need be. :)

As for the other topic of discussion, I'll post my two cents at a later date-not sure who reads this board online...you never know and I don't want to upset the potential adoptee out if they read stuff on here.

Well guys, here's the bittersweet news....

The guy who wanted to rehome his dobe has now talked his folks into keeping the dog. Looks like I won't be seeing her today or getting her. I'm sad but glad she doesn't have to be re-homed also. I really had my spirits high on this one though...*sigh*. Maybe it was fate knocking on the door and wasn't meant to be.

Leigha,
I can understand your dissapointment - but you know, I honestly think that everything happens for a reason. Maybe, she just wasnt' the right Dobe for you - but I'm sure if you keep your door and heart open, the right one will come along very soon. Make sure you keep checking DRU - There are so many wonderful dogs out there the home that you can provide!
