Question Question for experienced bitch owners: heat cycles.

Hey everyone,

Juno is my first intact bitch. She's on her second heat cycle and want to say she's on day 14 with bloody discharge. It's slight, but still somewhat steady. Her last heat cycle was 7 months ago. She had a false pregnancy after.
I guess my question is: how long does your bitch's cycle typically last, and what is the probability of another false pregnancy?

Thanks!

21 days.....some will swell first, then a few days later, 'color' will show, the 'flow" will get darker and heavier for a week or so and then taper off to a watery reddish color when standing heat starts..............some will be breedable for 7 to 10 days, some will only be in standing heat for 48 hours or so....each is similar..but different.

then there can be a ..........split heat.

google things to do to 'put off' a false pregnancy................

I let Fei go thru 2 heats b4 I spayed her. They both lasted about 21 days and were 6 months apart but were totally different otherwise. The first was what I had thought was normal-bloody, smelly, my neutered male took her virginity. The 2nd was slight, not smelly and Pullo was not interested. That scared me ( I was afraid of pyo) but she was o-k and I spayed her 3 months later with no problem. She did not have an obvious false pregnancy either time.

I did look online the first time and found many descriptions of what the flow would be like colorwise throughout her cycle which proved to be accurate in her case.

Flirt got false pregnancies every cycle. She's the only female out of 3 dogs that got them. Other 2 were Vizslas. Her cycle was about 21 days. Flirt came in at 8 months and the exatly every single 6 months until spayed. Then got stump pyo...so she might not be the norm

Lucy's cycle is also 21 days. She usually comes into season every 5 or 6 months. It has varied. She is 3 now.

She has gotten wicked false pregnancies every cycle after the first 1 or 2 times she came into season. They have become quite extreme, although thankfully this time around it seems noticably better. I think maybe the new puppy has somehow distracted her (she started a false pregnancy last Sat and is acting pretty normal at this point).

I have an old thread if you look under my user name regarding false pregnancies and several suggestions from different knowledgable people on the forum about how to help reduce them. I can't say I have had great success, but like I said this present one is much better compared to the last 4 or so.

Good luck with Juno.

They can also last longer. Have had them ready to breed on day 28.

Gracie has seasoned twice, 8 months apart. Three weeks. She's moody and nests after, but has not shown other signs of false pregnancy.

It should be good to be Dog.

I agree!! 21 days is not long enough to consider the season over. I have had numerous bitches ovulate (progesterone tested) on day 19 and that makes day 21 as optimal breeding time. I had a bitch I bred on day 25...13 puppies. I would absolutely wait 30 days before letting a bitch run with the dogs again.

As a side note...I have a friend who had an accidental breeding. Her daughter turned their NEUTERED male (7 days prior) out with a bitch in season and....voila. A litter of puppies. Don't underestimate mother nature!! LOL

Hehe, Zenyatta didn't ovulate till day 18, and she was bleeding brightly still. So, the eggs weren't mature till day 20... and even after she was bred she dripped till day 25.
She does come in like clockwork. Every 6 months which is makes it easy to plan for it.

Thank you everyone for your input I don't let Juno ever run with intact dogs (well, very rarely at least) I just I have another week until the bleeding stops. Sigh.
