Why did i wait?!

Its been 5years now that i have had ZEEK. When he was a puppy i would let him off the leash and he would stay close by. Well, when he was 8 months old he challenged me and took off from our house while we were outside one day. I had to chase him and finally caught him. Out of fear that he would get hit by a car due to us living in the city, that was really the last time he was allowed to go free...........

Now over 4yrs later, I have changed professions and I spent a lot of time working long hours, late into the night. Its a race shop where we work on new cars like corvettes , camaros , and mustangs.....making fast cars faster. I felt really bad about not only spending time without my wife, but my dogs also(Husky owner too) The Husky is just fine, as she isn't really into people and she is kinda a loaner Zeek on the other hand started missing me dearly, as i missed spending time with him. I had brought him to our shop before but never let him loose, always within closed doors. Well, a few weeks ago I decided a quite Sunday was the best time to try letting him be free. We are in a even bigger and busier city, so again i worried about his safety with cars. I always knew he was a good boy and listened to everything i said, but WOW!, he only needed to be told one time not to go past the shop door without me. He respects all visitors that stop by through out the day, never growling or barking unless its a person that is suspicious.....to me also. just as he always has, he knows who to be suspect about.

after that day i let him off the leash ANYWHERES and he never leaves my sight. Its like having a whole new friend again. i only wish i hadn't waited so long

sorry ZEEK, i owe you an apology.

To anyone else wanting to let their dobe run free........don't wait and trust them, they trust you and you owe it to them

That's great you can take him to work. Zeek needs a big soft bed for when he goes to the office!

One thing you learn quickly with huskys is don't let them off the leash lol. They just run and ignore any calling. They are opposite of a Doberman. They don't care about making you happy, its all about them . Very cat like.

Hopefully Nova is not a white one. I don't know if you were aware that white huskies are the most evil out of all the color combinations.

BLACK10 - I am so glad for you & Zeek that he showed you he was tight enough in love/bond/trust that he could not go to work with you, and hang out in the race shop - turly, its a dogs life, to hang out with the autos & people.
- feel free to post some project car photos, sounds like an interesting place you work at

I have been into muscle cars for 35 years now.
- 1965 Malibu S/S, 1966 Beaumont Custom, 1967 Beaumont Custom (2), 1967 Beaumont Sport Deluxe (original 396-350HP/M21/411's)

In college, I use to hit the auto wreckers every few months with my dobe and a 35 mm Canon, just to look around the yard on a Saturday morning.
Once I couldn't find my dog, so I back tracked and there she was sitting in a 1973 green Mustang fastback, in the drivers bucket...car had the doors off...LOL...it was so funny, and she was in her element.

On most weekends, I did sheetmetal welding and body & paint work, for 15-20 years.
I was amused that in my parents farm house, she layed on the couch (not floor) but in the garage she had no problem resting on the cement floor.
So I would park my 65 Chevelle or 55 Chev. post car in front of the garage bay and leave a car door opened...from there she could sleep on the bench seat or sit up and watch her Dad in comfort & get out for a drink of water when needed.

My dobes are trained off-leash and from day1.
- little pups can learn safe boundaries quickly with full supervision...and their short legs can't run off very fast...he-he...they learn my voice fast enough

------------Kelly & (Amy - RIP @ 11.7 y/o)

I have a friend that shows standard dachsunds now but did show malmutes and raced them. I asked her why she quit the mals and she said they would be running and then turn around and fight with the dog behind them and she gave up on them in the obedience ring too. She said it was all about them and they would hop the baby gate rings and go visiting.

Yea, she's a great dog, but just .......different. she's very loving, soft hearted, and very strong willed. She is perfection in what she was breed for.

The first person who interviewed me when I was hired by (warm-and-fuzzy, wants-to-be-all-positive) Petsmart was a lunatic assistant manager who had just separated from his wife. He had moved out of the house and into his giant motorhome with his three huskies, and drove his house to work every day. I walked into the office and sat down, and the first thing he asked me was, "How would you teach a husky to come when it was off leash?" When I said I would get a fifty foot line and a better electronic collar than is sold at Petsmart and teach the dog what "Come!" means, his eyes about bugged out of his head... then, he blinked a couple of times and said, "Yeah, I guess that might be how you'd do that" LOL!

yeah when I throw the ball she goes and gets it the first time. If I throw it again she just looks at me like I'm stupid and walks off

On a side note, anyone use this?

I've always had trouble trying to find something that fit well but I see that these are custom made. He gets cold easily in the winter time, even though our winters aren't that cold.

Its great to work with your dogs. The only down is you have to keep have a eye on them always. When you think that their content and nothing could pry them away...along comes a bitch in heat!!!! Be careful
