Cold climate Doberman owners...

I'm sure it's been done before, but those of you in cold climates, please share your winter/cold activities for keeping your dog exercised.

Shanoa and I will still bike if it's above about 15 degrees F and the roads are clear. However, it's a much shorter ride than we do in the summer. We use the dog park a lot more in the winter, because there aren't many people there. She will play with the Chuck It to help tire her out.

We also do indoor training activities in the house, just short little sessions to get her mind tired out.

I would love more ideas. I think I may have gotten her to accustomed to a lot of activity in the summer, and it's hard to match it in the winter when it's below freezing, snowy and covered in ice.

I'd love to hear any ideas from those of you who also live in cold, snowy areas. Shanoa does have a couple of coats, so I can keep her reasonably warm. On very, very cold days we just cannot go outside, for both our sakes. I have a treadmill and I can use that with her, although it's not her favorite thing.

Like I said, she really, really doesn't like the treadmill, so it's kind of my last resort. I've tried hard to make it positive, lots of clicking and treating. She will do it, if I ask her, but she doesn't really enjoy it.

Dobes23, I wouldn't worry about this winter, because you shouldn't put a dog on a treadmill until their growth plates are closed anyway.

I don't live in a snowy area but its not uncommon to have freezing rain so we deal with quite a bit of ice. I like to go to Lowe's and train and walk taking advantage of their heat.

I also still do a lot of play outdoors and just put their coats on unless its too icy and dangerous - for instance we don't do a lot of walks in town when its icy out. A car could easily slide off the street into us. But I do try to get out to parks to walk and do long-line training. Now that I'm a member of the local training club I also have 24-hour access to the training building so we can use the building this winter, too.

I also just try to play fun games indoors with them. Hide and seek is a good one, we tug a lot, learn new tricks, puzzle games/toys, etc.

I live in Québec, Canada.
It's VERY cold and we get ALOT OF SNOW.

That is, Dukes loves the snow.
When it's cold, - 20 C below, he has his little coat on and he's allright for a normal walk.
There's no doubt that he's more inside during the cold season but he gets used to it and likes it. He lovvvvess to sleep right in front of the fireplace haha

I am sooo bad in the winter time.. I think I was a bear in my last life..lol
pretty sure my dobie feels the same way.. doesn't mind going for walks as long as there short and sweet, but to go outside by herself..thats another story. pretty sure she would pee on the porch if i didn't watch and tell her to go down the stairs.. and thats with her jacket on..lol Here's to a fast winter so we can all enjoy the romps outside with our dobies in the spring

Assuming the paths are mostly clean and it is not too cold for either of us to tolerate, we go for walks not as long as in the warmer days.

Also, take Nelson out when we show shovel, when we pitch the snow he likes to chase it and can't figure out where it went.

We play in the back yard same as usual catch, fetch, wooba shake, etc. His new favourite game is runny, chasey, bite, bite. Which is I run, he chases and then the rest speaks for itself. lol

Are you talking cold, or COLD ? We were -25C here yesterday, wind chill in the -30C range. Dobes go on the deck, gets closer to the door as days go bye. Lots of yellow snow. Neighbors love it.

My dobes are older (8), one's a tripawd so the exercise demand is different. Zoomies in the living room, (no furniture) and weiner hunts are pretty much it.

I remember having a pup in these temps though, and I had to resort to day care because she was bouncing off the walls.

Next lifetime I'm coming back rich and I'm going to have an indoor pool. Maybe a pool boy.

Last winter we had long and very cold period on jan-feb. It was around -30°C to -35°C which is about -22°F to -31°F. No living creature wanted to go out for longer than 5 minutes so we had to do something inside the house. One of the favourite activities for my dobies was searching hidden treats around the house. Dogs waited in the kitchen when I went around the house hiding little pieces of dried liver (or something else) in every place imaginable. Under the stairs, behind the armchair, over the radiator etc... Then I let the dogs use their noses and search these treats and they really loved it. I know that this wasn´t a real physical excersize but at least it gave some brainwork for the dogs. Few times I got an opportunity to use a heated riding hall so I could do at least some obedience and other outdoor activities. That wasn´t much but it really was impossible to do anything outside. I had to put ridiculous amount of clothes on my dobies just to take them for a quick 5 minute walk. I really hope this winter is going to be warmer!

During the winter months, you can also find indoor training clubs to take a refresher on OB, rally, etc.

Gino plays with other dogs in our dog park. He runs like crazy and LOVE the snow.
IFthere are no dogs around we play a fetch. He is very focused and enjoys the game.

That's a great idea to take him to OB, agility, rally.

I know just what you mean about getting her used to too much activity in the summer! I feel like I have created a monster. I love winter though and go out in almost any weather. Wiccabella will do anything to run and she stays warm because she is always moving. We go to the golf course, cemetery, hiking trail (those are all off leash), and neighborhood walks on leash. She has a good jacket but when those -10 and colder days get here I sometimes walk around Petco, give them stuff to chew, ride in the car (which she hates)....I don't know. It is HARD!!!! As long as she keeps moving she stays warm.

We have a blizzard warning all day today. It was -15 last week, not as cold today. Normally we go to the high school football field in bad weather and I just let them run in the snow, they love it. I usually walk the track while they play. I normally just walk a mile when the weather is like this. They are used to 2 to 3 miles a day in better weather, so they are pretty spoiled too! Venus just got spayed last week, so she is on restricted excercise right now. Lucky me! But it is driving her crazy.

We bundle up and go play in the snow. It gets quite deep along the lake shores, and leaping through the snow conditions and tires W out quite well. I also put him on a Treadmill.

Red has his Chilly Dog sweater/coat and seems to keep quite comfortable on walks (well I walk and he runs, lol). I don't take him out when its in the low teens or single digits... I worry about his ears getting too cold, but I don't want to pin them down with one of those muffler things.

No doubt he definitely does spend more time in the house during the winter (and sometimes drives me a bit crazy), but he also really enjoys the fireplace

I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier, but tonight I put Shanoa's backpack on with some light weights in it for our walk. That should help make it a little more challenging, especially when you add in that we're walking on snow

I used to X-country ski with my first dobe (off-leash). You need to go somewhere with informal trails, however, because most ski enthusiasts hate dog footprints on their tracks.

I hate the cold weather Taking him on long walks during the winter is something I cant bring myself to do. So for 3 days a week he goes 2 Doggy Daycare. He loves it. He knows when Tuesday Wednesday & Friday comes. He wakes up extra early & for 3 days a week food isn't his priority. I love it. When he gets home he eats and goes to his bed (he's done for the day)

I bought my guys lots of new toys to occupy themselves indoors. I like the new dog tornado food puzzle. I also play fetch indoors down a long hallway.
