Announcement: New Dobermantalk Library!!

New and Improved! DT List of Recommended Books
We are soliciting help from all DT members.

We are organizing a list of books recommended by DTers, which will become a thread/section in the Doberman archives and a valuable resource for us all. We're looking for your recommendations of books about dogs, but that’s not quite all we need from you. This is what you can do:

First, post on this thread the title and author/s. Then pick a categories from those below where you think the book fits—you’ve read the book, we may not have, so we'd like to rely on you for that.

Additionally, if you would like, you could give your rating of from one to five stars for the book; if you’re very ambitious, you can post a short blurb/discussion (two or three sentences) of what you think makes the book special, or what it has to offer to DTers. Also, if at any time, you see a book already on the list that you would like to rate or review—feel free to post it on this thread.

Here are the categories:

• Basic General Dog books
• Specific Doberman breed books
• Health and Feeding
• Breeding/Puppy Raising

• Obedience and Household Living Skills
• Fun Tricks and Games for Your Dog
• Problem Behavior Management
• Dog Psychology and Interactions with People
• Rescue/Shelter/Specific Behavior Concerns With the Adopted Dog

• Search and Rescue, Military and Law Enforcement
• Service and Therapy Dogs

• Conformation Showing
• Obedience for Competition
• Protection Sports (European and American)
• Other Sports—rally, agility, fly ball, dock diving, tracking, etc.

• Doberman Publications

So far, many of the above categories are empty--please give us more titles to make our library list more well-rounded and comprehensive.

We will create a link to DT using a tool developed by LibraryThing--this tool is really neat with lots and lots of features. Using this tool, we will be able to:

1. Transfer your recommendations to a categorized list giving title, author and your rating (We think a DT rating would be more valuable than the rating we can pull off of Amazon or another book list—DT knows more!).

2. On the same page or a following page, include your comments about the book. Again, I think DT's reviews and ratings are worth more, 'cause we know more.

3. Additionally, link each book to its appropriate sales page with Amazon, which has Amazon's reviews and ratings.

We think you will enjoy using DT's list of books and having easily-available recommendations of good dog books from your fellow DT members.

Currently the library listing is under construction, but if you would like to glance over what has been done so far, you can use this link:
dobermantalk's books | LibraryThing

We expect to make some changes, but this glimpse should give you an idea of how much material will be available to you with a click of the mouse. As you can see, we have already entered some book titles, from a book recommendation thread in the obedience section of the DT archives.

Soon, there will be a thread with this link and explanations of the features and uses of the LibraryThing program in the educational archives. And maybe even some graphics!!

I hope you enjoy looking through this listing--feel free to make suggestions for this project.

Title: Dog Behaviour, Evolution, and Cognition
Author: Adam Miklosi
Category: Dog Psychology and Interactions with People
Discussion: Very interesting read for people who have an interest in the topic. This book collates all of the current research into dog behaviour, evolution and cognition with an evolutionary & ecological approach.

Title: Canine Ergonomics: The Science of Working Dogs
Author: William S. Helton
Category: Probably Basic General Dog books, but I believe it is aimed at Search and Rescue, Military and Law Enforcement
Discussion: Quite wordy and filled with a lot of data and graphs that could be off putting to many readers, but overall it is a good read, and well worthwhile for anyone who wants to know more about the science behind working dogs. Not written with sporting dogs in mind, but has a lot of knowledge regarding cancer detection, military, law enforcement, drug dogs etc.

Title: Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog
Author: Dr. Ian Dunbar
Category: Puppy Raising
Discussion: I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting a puppy. It discusses the importance of early socialization, the 6 developmental deadlines and covers all of the problems you may face when raising a puppy. I LOVE the no nonsense way this book is written and have had great results with relatives reading it and finally understanding why socializing dogs is so important!

30 Years of Dobermann

For those interested in Euro dobermann history of the past 30 years, Massimo Santini's book will be a good source..
Although it is advertised to be available for sale June 2010,i believe it has not been available yet.
I am waiting to order a copy myself.

"30 Years of Dobermann" is a new book about dobermann writen by Massimo Santini that will be available in the June 2010. It follows a way through the evolution of European dobermann from 1970 to 2000, separatly in Italy and other euro countries.

The book is composed of 6 chapters and has about 144 pages. It is available in Italian or English language.

You can read a part of the book here > 30 years of Dobermann

The book will be sold all around the world reaching many people so it presents a good opportunity for breeders to advertise their kennel. For all info about the advertisements in the book, please contact: Cheries Web&Design Studio - [email protected]

Title: Try Tracking! The puppy tracking primer
Author: Carolyn A. Krause
Category: Other Sports
Discussion: Great little book that breaks down training for tracking, mostly aimed at puppies but will work for older dogs too. Very easy to understand to a complete tracking newbie, and has illustrations of basic tracks to lay for when you get started.

Canine Body Language - A Photographic Guide by Brenda Aloff. Lots & Lots of good pictures. Very easy reading and it's very hard to put down once you start reading it. If you are going to give stars, I would rate this a five starr book.

Title: Advanced Obedience: Easier than you think
Author: Joel M. McMains
Category: Obedience for competition.
Discussion: A book aimed at trainers wanting to advance past the CD level of obedience, easy to understand tips about training specific behaviours and talks about the use of corrective collars as compulsion. Very good read for anyone considering taking their dog through to utility level obedience. The author owns Dobermans too, and uses them as the model for the photographs throughout the book- so bonus points!

Title: Excelling at dog agility. Book 3: Advanced skills training
Author: Jane Simmons-Moake
Category: Other sports
Discussion: Very useful read covering some key skills such as distance work, off side work, obstacle discrimination and many other things. Has some good diagrams supporting the text.

Title: The Focused Puppy: A Training System for Raising a Great Companion & Performance Dog
Author: Deborah Jones, Ph.D. & Judy Keller
Category: Puppy Raising & Agility
Discussion: I really enjoyed this book and have lent it to other people at my agility club to read, I love how each chapter is dedicated to an age period and has goals to tick off for each period, with things like socialization to people, animals, what behaviours to learn etc. "This book integrates the authors’ FOCUS (Fun, Obedience, Consistency, Unbelievable Success) Training System techniques with the developmental stages and specific needs of pups and young dogs. The goal is to help you prepare your puppy to become an excellent companion as well as a potential performance dog."
