Doggie diapers and heat

Good morning all!
Luna is just about 6mos old and I know she will be in heat for the first time very soon. Can anyone recommend a doggie diaper or something else to use during this time? Also, what should I expect from her? Like will she be acting or behaving any differently? Just so I don’t think that there’s something else wrong. I know the most important thing is to keep her away from male dogs.

Behavior changes - this might sound silly, but ask your breeder what to expect. Every bitch is different but some behaviors run in lines. I DIDN'T ask my breeder this question and was shocked when every heat came with false pregnancy and guarding behaviors. Expect clinginess, needy behavior, more vocalizing. Also do not DO NOT DO NOT let her out of your sight when outside. Check the yard before letting her out. I have a 6 ft stockade fence and was greeted one morning by a bully breed mix sitting on my back steps, looking hopeful. I don't know how he got in. I STILL don't know how he got in.

For the bitch pants, I believe Bitch Britches is still around. They were popular back when we needed them.

The "pants" we liked best were from Working Dogs Cool coats. https://www.facebook.com/workingdogcoolcoats

Sypha preferred the more "full coverage" style rather than a narrower fit. I used a pantyliner inside so I could simply dispose of it about two to three times a day, and then wash her pants every few days. I would personally recommend several pairs of pants. Inevitably someone will forget to take the pants off before you take her out to potty. Get her used to wearing them before she comes into heat. I also wouldn't leave them on her when you aren't supervising unless you are certain she won't take them off and shred/eat them. Some girls need to wear them a lot, some girls keep themselves pretty clean.

Peroxide is a good cleaner for cleaning up small spots off your floors, etc. Do a test first, but that's what I've used, and it didn't stain anything, and cleaned up everything very nicely.

For sure talk to your breeder. Know that the first heat can be different than other heats. Longer, shorter...just different. Don't count on the "normal" cycle for timing, and be vigilant. I always tracked cycles on my calendar. Start date, end date. Really helpful for knowing what's normal for your girl.

When your dog is in full heat, I would even recommend taking her out on a leash even if your yard is fully fenced, not just going out with her and allowing her to run around. She may want to get to the guys as much they want to get to her, and some dobes can jump higher than you would think if the need is on them.

I remember one memorable walk with Capri at the beginning of her cycle—I used to drive to other neighborhoods a mile or two away to walk her so we wouldn't leave a trail back to our house—I took her out of the car and she did her obligatory pee marking, then we started off. There was a lot of snow on the ground, and after plowing through it for maybe 200 feet, I decided a walk was not in our future that day. I turned around to go back to the car and there was a coyote sniffing her spot.

In the middle of a neighborhood in broad daylight…

I really like Pants for Dogs.

I prefer the French cut to the thong style. The thongs run small and they don't stay in place as well on my girl.

I'll just echo others to ask your breeder for thoughts on what you might expect. And I second/third/fourth to never, ever, ever leave her alone outside and, if you have a male dog, I would also crate them in separate rooms when you can't supervise them.

Also, I don't know many Dobermans that come into heat around 6 months. I think 9 months is considered a little "early" for Dobes but I've known a lot of bitches who don't have their first heat until close to a year old.

Sypha came in pretty early too...I want to say around 7 months. Each dog is different. Always good to be vigilant with girls!

And I went to my first National in many years with three bitches from the litter that my own Doberman (their litter brother) was from. All of them came in season two days before we left for the National--and their breeder and I felt like idiots because she had kept a bitch out of the litter and knew that their schedule was short cycles and they had all had their first season within days of 6 months and within days of each other.

And worse--they came in season like clockwork every 5 months after that.

My poor dog...

Yeah, Sypha cycled every 5 months...it was, not so fun.

To be clear, I wasn't saying it never happens, just that it's not widespread in Dobermans that I know of. I tried to state that clearly and also concurred that the OP should check with their breeder because it does vary by line, and it can also vary by specific breedings.

For instance, all the bitches in my girl's litter came into heat within a couple days of each other which deviated from what is typically expected in her breeder's lines.

I just thought I would mention it so the OP doesn't become concerned if the pup doesn't come into heat soon.

My apologies for any confusion I've caused.

I think the lesson is...bitches are complicated! :grin2::grin2::grin2:

I don't think you created any confusion, Brigette! I swear, girls. I adore Sypha, but man. Girls are just...so MUCH. Boys are way easier!!! >:)

Lol, I saw this post earlier and got all worried that I wouldn't be prepared. Even though my girl just hit 5 months I ordered a pair of black Pants for Dogs in the french cut. I wasnt sure how long it would take to get them shipped up here, but they arrived in 3 weeks. Obviously they dont fit yet, but I'm going too start putting them on here and there so hopefully she won't mind by that time. They are very well made. When my husband asked what exactly they were for and I explained, he just looked at me!!🤣🤣 LMAO!!

L&A, I tried them on my girl again today. She is still not impressed, but not overly bugged by them either. They were not exactly cheap, but as things go and all the stuff we can waste money on, I think they were worth it. Her little tail can stick out with no problems, and they have lots of velco to adjust at the waist. I got black in consideration of my hubby, but they have some nice flashy bright ones. ;)
