Fostering With Dobermans?

Hello all,

It has been a real long while. Years ago I thought I was ready to add a doberman to my family, and then life did what it normally does and threw a few curveballs my way. Between deployments, switching bases, pandemic, family passings, a marriage and combining of two households, my life has dramatically changed. My body has finally called it, so I will be leaving the military life soon which will stabilize a lot of my curveballs in my life. Through everything however, I have always fostered dogs. Over the last ten years or so I cannot even begin to count how many I've had. That is something I would like to continue, however before the pandemic I spoke to a few doberman owners at an AKC event near me and they stated their opinion on fostering dogs, having a revolving door of canines coming through, would not work well with a doberman in the household. Now, I am moving to Texas once I am out of the military and planned on using my foster credentials and applying to be a Puppy Raiser for guide dogs. They stay in the household for almost a year, which I think would possibly be not as much as a revolving door issue as I was told.

Any way, that was just some background on my situation. I still have plenty of time before even thinking of selecting a breeder. I did however want some opinions on fostering with a doberman. Do any of you do it? Does anyone think there should be any concerns(breed specific)? Thank you all in advance for the discussion. Sadly due to the pandemic I haven't been to any events to talk to owners in person.

I know people that do it. I think it would be important to ensure you have a foster of the opposite sex of your dog, just as you would if you were adding a permanent dog.

I was able to foster several dogs and cats with my Hilde (RIP). We had a good relationship and she was always confident that she was my number one doggo. She did get jealous, so I had to give her a lot of one on one time and never expect her to share anything with the foster. If she didn’t get enough time with my husband or me, she cried. Constantly. Another issue is that she loathed other female dogs (very typical Doberman same-sex aggression) so the one time we had a female, we had to crate and rotate. We only had male foster dogs after that.

As others have mentioned above, I suspect it depends mostly on the dog, secondly on your family, finally on the foster animal. It might be better to have a short term foster before you commit.

Although I foster less now that I am breeding, I think it's actually helped my dogs be more rounded. I only bring in females, since I have an intact male, and wouldn't you know they ALWAYS come into heat lol.

Now that I'm a breeder I'm pickier about what type of dog I bring in, no more dogs from Mexico or found roaming on the streets, just owner surrender types. I also tend to like young dogs whose owners thought they were bad but that I can mold behaviors and turn into good family pets.
