How to help a dog with firework/noise phobias

Since I just saw a post about a dog that has issues with fireworks, and the 4th of July is right around the corner, I want to share this link on how to help your dog with noise sensitivities.

You may think, it's too late! It's NOT! This is the BEST post I've ever read about noise phobias. There are a couple of sections.

What can I do RIGHT NOW if my dog is already afraid of fireworks/storms and the issue is happening now?

What can I do if my dog is noise sensitive to help improve their issues?

What can I do with a new puppy/dog to prevent issues in the future?

EVERYONE should read this. Truly. It's excellent. While there is no guarantee that older dogs will not develop sensitivities over time (and, that is actually the most common), we owe it to our dogs to do everything we can to prevent this.

My two dogs are not noise sensitive. I did a lot of preventative work with both as puppies, and I CONTINUE to reinforce that every year. They still get "thunder chicken" with big storms and with fireworks. I'm doing my best to help them avoid noise sensitivity.

Without further ado - read this! Dogs and Fireworks/Eliminating Noise Phobia

The last 2 days - the local news has had a segment on fireworks and pets , but did cover the base's like the about Post by MC , Kasia girl was pretty good with storms till the had a Tornado go behind our house in our field - it was the worse thing that could have happened , from the day on , storms really got to her , She was my wife's dog , yet droning a storm - She came to me to protect her . We did use a Thunder jacket on her and it did help out a lot , Not a sure fire cure - I would guess maybe 60 % help - but that was tons !

What we found it is the Barometric pressure of the storm that tripped her up - she could feel it , One of the best things we did for her was play music , no kidding , we always play music here , and if a good song comes on and I would crank it up some, she would run and get a ball and want to play , so that is why I used music when storms came - why I don't know , other than the flash was brighter , but night time storms was off the scale .

the 4th ? did not bother her much of any .

Thanks MC for the tread

Good read, MC, thanks for sharing. Mocha has always been pretty blasé about fireworks and thunder, but our Shih Tzu, before he went deaf, used to be terrified and thunderstorms, and the holidays like July 4th and New Years were horrible for him. We tried a few things like the thunder shirt, benadryl, turning the TV up...nothing helped the poor guy. We're so, so glad that Mocha isn't bothered by loud noises.

She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader.
She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion.

So far Sugar is not bothered by fireworks or thunder. Poor Coco was terrified and could feel the storm coming before it did. The only place she would stay during either event was way back in our closet and pant heavily. Nothing could distract her from fireworks or thunder. Poor gal.

During the last long weekend in May I was coming home from a walk at night with Sugar when I heard the fireworks go off. I instantly reacted in stress thinking I was out with Coco (because this happened once with her when I had not planned ahead and she froze on the sidewalk and refused to move). Sugar kept merrily walking, sniffing and peeing on trees completely unfazed. So I quickly threw off my stress so he wouldn't feel it and we continued our walk with the fireworks blasting around us. Then we sat on the front porch and watched the grand finale. I so hope he does not become noise sensitive because it's awful to see what a state your lovey can work themselves into.
