A Heron, A Deer, And Some Geese

Yep, yet another hike in the park yesterday and although it was a lot more crowded than I like, Mocha and did our part to social distance and I even managed to get some wildlife shots.

It seems I interrupted this young buck while he was trying to scratch an itch

A pair of Canada geese with their babies

The heron also made an appearance

I totally hosed this shot up, by having too slow of a shutter speed which resulted in the heron's head being blurry as it shot forward to spear its breakfast.

The heron with the aforementioned breakfast

We were in the woods pretty early so most of the trail areas were still quite dark, but I did get at least a couple of shots of my hiking partner

Till next time

¡Fantástico! As others have said, TN!

Watch out for deer mommas and Mocha!

Just got this on NextDoor feed from nearby neighborhood about a man walking (3) of his dogs when one got loose and had encounter with two does who attacked both him and dog. Most of deer attack videos I have seen on YouTube show loose dogs barking aggressively at deer doe, who attack to protect nearby fawns...

Here is story from NextDoor, which sounds a little embellished IMO:

"... So once again I stopped to try and leash her up and once again she started going crazy. But this time I heard a noise and when I turned there was a doe a couple of feet away from me threatening to charge.

The deer rears up and begins to start kicking me and my dogs. I end up on my back while the deer is landing kicks inches from my head and neck. Yet again my dog gets loose from me and now the other two dogs are also going crazy. So I get up, yell and charge at the deer and run it off.

At that point I decided to tie my two dogs up to a mailbox a couple of houses up and go back with collar looking for my dog. I found her hiding under some poor souls trailer. She was terrified. I could not get her to come out from underneath the trailer. So while I'm crawling under the trailer to try and put her collar on her the deer reappears again trying to charge me while I'm just trying to get the dog out from under the trailer and leave. This deer would NOT give up, (I scanned the area for babies but saw none).

Once again I ran the deer off and when I finally get a collar on my dog and dragged her out from underneath the trailer the deer began charging yet again."

Of course the NextDoor respondents advised him to use a leash. I would also advise him to walk less dogs at once in wildlife areas. When dogs get ramped up in a group, they're sometimes hard to control.

I used to take both Spock and Eva together to our local wildlife park (walking distance), but one time when we stepped out in our front yard, (2) squirrels were in middle of our walkway! Of course being on our property, both of the knuckleheads got ramped up and then started talking smack to each other, being excited about the squirrel. I had to go back inside and then take one at a time on their walks. Now, they only go together on walks together if I have another person helping (DW or daughter or relative) Besides I need the extra exercise, myself.

This also is advantageous when loose, rogue dogs that might approach. Having two Dobes on leashes is very awkward to handle, when you need other hand for zapper light or pepper spray, etc.

"A Heron, A Deer, And Some Geese..."

walked into a bar one day...

What's the punchline?
________________________________________________

I had a deer chase Katana back into the house once. I always look for them before I let the dogs out, but there is a little bit of a fence which blocks my line of vision. Katana wandered around the edge of it, and all of a sudden comes charging back with her ears clipped tight to the back of her head. Close behind her was a mama doe. I thought she was going to come in the house after Katana, but she stopped on the edge of the patio, about 15 feet away, stomping and snortimg--very intimidating.

Deer protecting their babies are nothing to sneeze at.

Very nice pictures. If I could match the "blur" on your fishing heron, I would think my picture was perfectly focused, compared to the ones I normally take.

...

A Heron, a Deer, and some Geese walk into a popular Clarksville bar one day. The heron was a long-legged female who sat at the middle of the bar. Two male geese sat down, one on each side of the lovely lady heron.

The first goose tried out his best pickup line: “Baby, you got more legs than a bucket of KFC!” for which he promptly received an eye roll from the heron. Seeing his buddy get rejected, the second goose gave it a go, telling her: "If you were a chicken, you’d be impeccable!" This got the goose a wing slap and a peck in the head from the heron.

Well, the deer, a young handsome buck, came over to the heron and gave his best shot. "Are a native of Tennessee? Because you’re the only Ten I See!” Immediately, the heron got up and left the bar with the deer, leaving both geese dumb founded.

The first goose said, “I know our lines were bad, but the deer’s intro was just so lame!” Second goose said, “Well, chicks will always prefer horny bucks to a daffy ducks!”

Beautiful pics as usual TN. Your heron shots are breathtaking!

Watch the Canadian geese too. They can be quite vicious when they have babies with them. They will charge you and try to bite you if they feel the babes are at risk. We Canucks give them a wide berth!

Thanks so much, everyone. I'm an introvert and don't care to be around people all that much, and I've found photography to be a hobby that not only do I love, but it's something I can do apart from others...and it never gets old

Deer - oh I know too well to be very careful. The fall before last, Mocha and I were walking the trails during the rut and there was a doe not 5 feet from the trail, with a big buck standing maybe 25 feet further in the woods. All I had with me that day was my cellphone, and I stopped, brought up my cellphone, and took a few pics of the doe, who remained oblivious to both Mocha and myself, and then I took one step toward the buck so I could get a better pic. I guess he didn't like me getting too close to that doe because he charged about 10 feet forward and I beat a hasty retreat, while telling myself what an idiot I was...alone in the woods, with Mocha by my side, doing something that dumb during the rut, when the bucks get stupid, brave, and dangerous.

And sadly, I also know all about the Canada geese and their young. A few years back, I drove down to the river so I could walk around the big pond they have in that park, and it was spring, and all the geese had little ones running everywhere. I thought it would be a great idea to get some extreme closeups of the babies...well, as I quickly found out, the adults didn't care for that one bit and things got well, a little heated. Luckily no one else saw it, so there are no viral YouTube videos of me being chased down the path by an angry honker LOL. I laugh about it now, but geez, those geese triple in size when they're coming at you with their wings spread and honking away.

Here you go Mel !

A Heron , A Deer and a Goose were sitting in a bar having a beer one day when the Heron asked - what do you think the fastest thing in the world is ? Before the others could answer - the Heron said he thinks it's a thought ! You think about some something and there it is = a thought !

The Deer replies No , NO , No , Its electricity ! You flip a switch and the light pops on , It has to be the fastest thing there is !

The Goose sitting there listening said your all are wrong ! Its Diarrhea !!!! The other two looking replied -- Diarrhea ??? How could that be ??? Well the Goose said the other morning while laying in bed - And before I could think or turn on the light - there it was !
