Eileen, my "Squirrel Whisperer"

Hello all,

Several months ago I asked for some advice on a 7-year-old-ish foster Dobe I was nurturing back to health. Well, after that I couldn't let her go. She's mine.

Over the past several months something quite remarkable has developed. She's become obsessed and quite enchanted with the squirrels in the backyard. I was feeding them for my cat's entertainment (safely in their catio).

Now Eileen is out there every day, rain or show (hence the rain coat), and sits for up to two hours just watching - literally. She sits like a statue, never makes a move, while they grab their nuts, nibble, and bound through the yard carefree. The squirrels trust her implicitly - as you can see in the one photo. Twice now I've seen one walk right up and sniff her butt, she never makes a move. They get close enough that she could easily snatch one up, but she just watches.

Not sure why that one photo posted sideways.

The Doberman & The Little Squirrel*

Eileen, the Doberman, while sitting out in her yard was approached by Little Squirrel.
Eileen barked at the squirrel telling it: “Be Aware little one, Dobermans have a known reputation for chasing squirrels from our yards!”
Little Squirrel begged the fierce looking canine: “Oh please lady hunter Doberman, spare my life, for I have mistakenly wandered into your lovely yard.”
Eileen replied to squirrel: “You realize that I could swallow you whole, except for that bushy tail!”
At that the squirrel replied: “Yes, but I would be just a morsel for you to eat. If you let me sit next to you, my other friend, Mr. Rabbit will see us and think you are friends with small animals. He will also come sit with us and then you’ll have a feast fit for a Doberman!”
Seeing Little Squirrel’s logic, Eileen sat with Little Squirrel daily, awaiting the much-anticipated arrival of Mr. Rabbit….

Only a Wise one can persuade a Doberman to pass on a meal in hand for a feast in the bush…

...However, a Wise, but Evil one will also push friends in the path of ox-carts, when necessary.

Congrats on your new addition!

I'm amazed she sits with the squirrels that close....that would NEVER happen in my yard Richter considers himself on "squirrel patrol" at ALL times....no squirrel must EVER have free reign in our yard!

I wonder, too. It's so amazing to watch. I did have my previous Dobe trained to not chase them. On command, she would sit and quiver, but never move. But I trained her. With Eileen, I never even got the chance before she took it upon herself to do it. Don't know if she wants to be friends, or maybe she realizes if she chases, they go away - no idea. I've been trying to get video, but it's tricky. And I have to work so don't have the time to hand by the window and watch.

Thanks! Um, I got it on Chewy.com: https://www.chewy.com/frisco-reversi...-dog/dp/180432

Wish it were a little heavier, may upgrade for winter. Of course, I wasn't expecting that she would willingly sit in the POURING rain to appease her obsession.

I am (I sadly confess a dyed in the wool long time)They squirrel hater.

They tease my dogs, steal my tomatoes as they ripen, dig in my potted plants to bury stuff and in my flower beds and lawns.

Most of my dogs barked endlessly (and got in trouble with me for all the barking) at them--the squirrels would hang out on the fences and chitter at the dogs--driving the dogs into barking fits--but when Rumor was born (I still miss you Rumor--because you disliked the danged squirrels as much as I did) he figured out when very young--that if he didn't bark at them he could sneak up on the squirrels on the fences and occasionally was able to grab them by the tail and yank them off the fence.

In the nearly 10 years Rumor was with me the squirrels stopped teasing my dogs (mostly--every spring there was a new crop of young dumb squirrels for him to yank off the fence) and my tomatoes went un-stolen and I didn't have zillions holes in the lawn and flower pots and beds where things had been buried.

And Toad is too old to be trying to chase squirrels--make him wheeze and make me worry a lot.

If the dog teasing alone wasn't enough--they carry an amazing variety of parasite that's I'd just as soon not have in my yard (I know this because during breeding, whelping season for squirrels we'd get at least a few that fell out of nests and we can't legally do anything for or to them--have to call the wild life people to come and get them--we'd stick them in the isolation areas and then have to spray it with a high powered insecticide when they were taken away--fleas, sometimes ticks, and some other unidentifiable things living on their surface. And then we cleaned the interior with the same surface cleaner we used for cages for distemper dogs and ring worm kitties--that stuff kills everything.

Maybe I could set out a live trap and send any squirrels I catch off to Eileen (nuts I can't do that--it's illegal for me to mess with the wildlife).

Nuts...

Wish it were a little heavier, may upgrade for winter. Of course, I wasn't expecting that she would willingly sit in the POURING rain to appease her obsession.

Last winter - I got Ali and Kadin a new Weatherbeeta coats for winter - it sort of reminds me of a horse blanket and there water proof , easy to put on , The only bad thing - is I wish it came up on there necks a little bit more , But they get the job done . Will see If I can find a picture and post it up for you to see

Doc.
