Does anyone want to participate in the exchange this year? I know postage is expensive but I miss getting all of those beautiful cards in the mail! Please post if you would like to participate.

Thank You:2smile:

That would be great if you're sure you want to, Cressb.

I was going to try if no one stepped forward and I could figure out how to do it.

It does sound relatively simple--the two concerns that seem to get raised are that cards + mailing costs can run up if there are a lot of people on the list, but if you just commit to sending your cards to one or two people, it seems like some people might get left out. And also some people don't want their real names and addresses broadcast to everyone who is participating in the exchange.

With few enough people who aren't security minded, sending lists with addresses and names would probably be all you'd need to do.

If there are a lot of people participating, or people who would like to join in but have security concerns, one method I read that might work and doesn't seem too complicated is:

People who want to participate send names and addresses along with their user names, to the coordinator. The coordinator sends the complete list with user names only, to each person on the list.

Each participant makes or buys a card for each person on the list. They package them all up in a prepaid flat rate priority postal envelope or small box, include another envelope with their own name and address, and mail those to the person running the exchange. I suppose that they could even write a user name on each card's cover envelope, so they could send different cards to different people, and include a personal message for each user.

The coordinator deals out all of the cards into the prepaid envelope/box that each person sent and takes them to the post office to mail. Looks like a flat rate envelope/box is about 7-8 dollars?? and I'm thinking might hold a bunch of individual cards, so the total postage cost for each person who participates would be about $16.

Mailing cost for a standard size Christmas card is $ 0.55, more if it is oversized or over weight, or if you want to include something else in the envelope. Bulk mailing may be cheaper than mailing things individually if there are a lot of people on the list. And the only person who would know your real name and address is the person running the thing.

Of course, you would get all of the cards in one box instead of having the fun of checking the mail each day, though I guess you could ration them so that you are only opening one or two each day. :)

Also I'm not sure about mailing costs to Canada or other countries? I would think that you could get some kind of international version of a prepaid envelope?

Anyway, send me a PM and we can toss for the privilege of running the thing. :)

Oh my goodness, I think my eyes crossed trying to read all that. Of course, just returning from 3 days cabin building might not help. :)
When I did the card list the year Sieya was in charge, I remember footing the cost for Canada postage and Japan postage. Wasn't that
much and I didn't care. Just had fun sending and receiving.

I think you might be more in tune with this than me. We don't have to toss, lol. Go ahead. I would join the list and I have no problem
sending you my address etc.

Just start a thread of its own and see who might want to join. Even if only ten people, it would be fun.

Shoot, I was secretly hoping you would take it on. :grin2: No matter.

I'll try to get a link put up today. Do any of the rest of you have any feeling about whether I should just send all of the addresses and names I get to everyone who's joining in, or whether I should try some process to shield those names from everyone? Also whether or not you just want addresses available so you can figure out who to send cards to, or whether I should set up the *rules* so that you have to send cards to everyone?

In the past, we had to give our DT name, real life name, and address.

The information was shared only with people on the card exchange list, and we had to agree to use it only for the purpose of the card exchange.

If there were over 20 or so participating, we had the options of "full list" or "half list" for how many we wanted to send, and the person in charge of collecting the addresses was the one who divvied them out to "half list" people. You could specify whether or not you would send cards internationally, though.

Even if we can't stand one (or more) of the people on the list, we still have to send them a card if we get their name.

Cards needed to be sent out in time to reach their destination before the holidays, especially if being sent internationally. I want to say they needed to be sent by December 1st?

You might want to search for some of the old exchange threads, and see if there were any other rules?
