Funny comments about my boy

So...

McCoy is walked daily in public. Usually 2-3 times a day. He is well socialized and loves human interaction. He gets a lot of attention.

Usually, "What a handsome dog... Is he friendly". Often "Wow, that's a big dog... Can I pet him?

The other day we were on a walk and a woman stopped and asked "Is that a Doberman? Is he purebred ? He seems so small and short". I proceeded to tell her (in the nicest way), that he was pretty much spot on to Doberman standards.

He is an 85lb. intact male of average show line height and stature. He is very handsome and in perfect shape. I just had him lose 2-3 pounds of winter weight. She continues on, asking me if I was sure he was a purebred Doberman. I explained to her that his dam is a Grand Champion from a fine breeder and was the #6 Dobe bitch in the country when he was whelped. Also, that most of his siblings have either become Champions or Grand Champions.

She just looked at me, shook her head and said : "Well... I don't think so. He's too short and too small to be a pure bred Doberman".

I laughed and walked away.

People are funny in their ignorance!

Some peoples kids!! Good on you for being nice and polite!

People love to admire Ryan's looks but then usually proceed to tell me she is smaller than their friends Doberman. I do my best to explain she is nicely bred and well within the standard for bitches.... pretty sure it falls on deaf ears.

There are a lot of stupid people who fall for the “king Doberman” bit. In their minds if a dobe is not 100+ lbs it’s not a “Doberman.”

These people have not made any effort to know the breed standard and most often are not even dog lovers.

LOL... I get that all the time too. A while back woman said the same thing. When I explained to here that he was cropped she said: "Well, they didn't do a very good job". McCoy has a beautiful long show crop.

Sometimes I will explain to people that he doesn't hold his ears totally erect all the time. Then I will put him on alert and his ears pop right up.

Other times I just smile and nod....

I remember talking to the principal of my daughter's school once. He was a very nice guy, and he oohed and aahed over my girl Katana. She was small, but within the standard still.

Anyway, as seems to happen so often when you meet someone who stops to talk dogs with you, he had had a doberman in his younger days. He proceeded to tell me all about his wonderful dobe. I could tell how much he missed him and his stories were interesting and funny, but he also bragged about how big the dog was. "He was a Warlock dobe" he said proudly.

Then he asked me if Katana was a "mini".

And the first words out of my mouth, blunt and pure impulse, with a bit of an edge to them, were, "No, she's the size they're supposed to be."

And he just looked at me, a little shocked--I was rather embarrassed. The man had such nice memories of his dog, and hadn't been offensive or pushy about his dog's size, or cut down Katana because she was small. But still...

People are funny - for some reason a lot of people expect Dobermans to be huge. I've had people ask if Harvard is a pure bred - um, yes, he is an AKC Grand Champion - hahahaha! Of course, I live in Kimbertal territory, and compared to a lot of those dogs, mine are small!

John,

Those are the same people who nervously ran for the sidewalk on the other side of the street when I was walking Rumor (who was barely 27"--and AKC Champion with a ton of performance titles, a ROM dog etc)--and from the other side of the street they asked me if he weighed 120 pounds (they had a friend who had one that weighed 120#) I said, no he was small for a Dobe but well within the standard. They asked if he was friendly--I said no (and he wasn't--but if they'd been within reaching distance of him they'd have seen the look in his black eye--"Make my day!"

And for Toad--when he was a puppy (a tall gangly puppy--almost at his full height by 6 months) I had him out front of the vet clinic and one of our clients came out--stopped shot to look a Toad--she said "Well, he's got to be a Doberman but what the hell is that color?" Turned out she'd seen black, red and blue but didn't know there was such a thing as a fawn--but she definitely recognized him for what he was.

On the other hand there was a guy at an Agility trial (Toad must have been around 4 years old at that point) he came nervously up to me--Toad and a Dobe bitch were in an expen and Toads litter brother Ean and another bitch were in an expen nest to them. That man was about 10 feet back from me and I was at least 4 feet from the expen Toad was in--he wanted to know what kind of dog Toad was (he looked an awful lot like the three back dogs that were hanging out with him) I told him Doberman--he said well I know those other dogs are Dobermans but what's that light colored one--I repeated myself--a Doberman. He clearly didn't believe me. He walked across the aisle and as a woman standing back there--he could see her dog but I knew her--it was a red Doberman. He was asking questions--she was shaking her head about something. It went on for awhile.

Ultimately he left--looking disgusted. She walked over to me and said "Did you know that Dobermans only came in black and rust? My jaw must have dropped and she went on to tell me that even after she took her red dog out of the crate all he could say is that he KNEW Dobermans only came in black and what we had were clearly some sort of mutts or crosses.

So you can blame Grandpa Toad for the fact that McCoy is small and doesn't look like a Doberman.

Sometimes ya' just gotta' wonder...MaryJo--if I lived where you live even the 28-1/2" toad would look small...

I was walking Caesar (my first dobe) once in a largish wooded city park on the north side of Chicago, maybe 15 miles from downtown, but still definitely in the city. It was a snowy bad-weather day and we were in a thickety foresty area, so he was off leash messing around in some bushes, quite close but not exactly visible. So when I saw a woman approaching from the distance, I called him to me. He tromped back through the thicket, and she gasped.

"I thought it was a wolf!!"

Yup, my pet wolf...we always walk in the middle of Chicago.

That's the same park though, where I was walking another time, and heard barking/yelping in the distance. Suddenly a herd of sled dogs, pulling an empty sled, barreled around a bend in the trail, ran past us full blast, around another bend and out of sight, howling merrily as they went.

It wasn't TOO much later when a guy came into sight also, charging down the trail full blast. He stopped to pant a bit and asked us if we'd seen some sled dogs go by. We said, "Uhh...yes...uhh...they went that way." And he told us "It's OK; they'll just go back to the car. That's what they always do." and disappeared after them.

Rather surreal, somehow.

Ok...

Another case of mistaken identity: Years ago we were walking Butcher off leash in a semi wild area in the city called Powell Butte. Butcher was a big boy always trying to push a buck. Still very fast and agile.

In any case, there were two guys clearing brush off the trail as Butcher bounded by in high gear. The one guy jumped up and said: "Look! there's a black deer!"

But (I'm not sure of their ethnicity) it came out "Rook! Dare's a Bracku Deeru".
After that we often referred to B as the Bracku Deeru. LOL

The mistaken identity stories are hilarious.

My Afghan Hound provided me with a good one. When the area that was to become the area between the end of the International flights and the edge of the bluff at the Pacific Ocean was still just chain linked fencing my friend and used to take our Afghans down there because there were lots of rabbits. Her dog would chase rabbets until his tongue was hanging far enough down that he could step on it and my dog would watch where the rabbit was goig and lay a path so that he could intersect the rabbit and catch it. He could quite a few--some unharmed and some rather the worse for wear. His buddy Sultan would go on chasing rabbits until he couldn't run any more. Sam (my hound) got bored after he'd caught two or three and would go back to the cars and jump up on the roof of my VW--made a nice picture--blond dog on a dark blue VW.

We we one our way back to the cars with Sultan--Sam was nowhere to be seen which meant he'd be on my car when we got ther.We were almost there--just one turn of the path and some brush between us and the cars when we heard two woman talking. Of course the were talking about the dog on the VW but they hadn't done a very good job of identification--one thought it was a deer (musk ox maybe but no deer ever had a coat like that) the other one said it was a wild goat--and they both thought it was a shame that people were out shooting animals of any sort within the city limits.

About that time Sam heard us and stood up--I don't know what the ladies thought he was but they both gasped! We pretended not to see them and tried not to laugh as we got back to the cars--they were very silent and tried hard to go as far away as possible.

My perfectly good Afghan Hound looked just like what he was--deer, wild goat--not so much.

Well, in their defense........

But you'd think they would have noticed the missing horns.

Mel, that's some picture--it finally came up on my desk top--I've gotta' go to the library (but not today) to check that picture out. LOL!! As it came up for me here it looks lika a black tipped silver but mostly like a black tipped silver lump--<VBG>

Not so much like a black masked apricot hound. Still didn't look like any kind of deer I've ever seen but there are all kinds of goats--so I won't be too judgemental at this point.

For the record fawn Dobes at night (especially on a moonlit night) look mostly like ghosts.

Makes me grin just thinking about it.
