Breed Specific Legislation

Does anyone have insight into the trend internationally about Breed Specific Legislation? Here in Chile we have a ridiculous new law that includes Dobermans along with Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds, requiring muzzles at all times when in public. There is in response to an epidemic of dog bites by large, un-owned, mixed-breed street dogs running wild, so this new law is our legislatureís typically retarded reaction, taking what is logical and doing the exact opposite. So, now we have still have the street dogs biting people (the government does not even attempt to remove them from the streets, they do nothing), responsible owners of trained pure bred dogs are at risk of fines or jail, and the government gets to collect some more revenue from fines.

I simply ignore the law and walked my dogs without muzzles, A few times some police came to bother me about it; sometimes I tell them they are not Dobermans, they are a mixed breed, sometimes I told them they are the national champions 2018, and they donít know what to say or think. Its actually pretty funny. Once I let my male surprise them and enter their patrol car through the open door to put his head on the lap of the officer and charm them with his doe eyes.

The problem here is that most people, not just the idiots in the legislature, have never even seen a Dobe before except in the movie Doberman Gang or the Exorcist, and that forms their entire perception of the breed. I am often hassled by people, while others came up to ask to have their picture taken with them. It is annoying; I just want to walk the dogs without people acting like they are monsters or celebrities; they are just dogs, okay?

From my research, I thought that breed specific legislation was at an end, or being reversed worldwide, as more intelligent minds realize it does no good and harms those who own these breeds. Yet, we have new laws here. How is the trend in other countries?

I wish BSL was at an end. Both the breeds I own, German Shepherd Dog and American Pit Bull Terrier, are both targets of it, pitties especially.

Yes here in the USA a they target these breeds also.
Not regulated by government but rules set by folks that own housing complexes.
Some of our military people that move around a lot have experienced issues with these rules.
Definitely bad news for those that train their dogs and exercise good citizenship.

Saying it's not regulated by the government isn't strictly accurate. While there are no federal BSL laws, there are any number of places that restrict breeds and/or breed types under to local ordinances. Denver's pit bull ban comes to mind.

Quebec is literally behind everyone else on everything, so while I think the Netherlands has reversed BSL, Quebec has several municipalities with BSL, that is by and large unenforceable. Montreal had it briefly before a new mayor was elected and dissolved it. However now the provincial government wants to make it province wide. This mostly would target Pit Bull Type dogs, although they are using a catch all "Dangerous Dogs" term and say any breed may be added at any time or reviewed and classed as dangerous. So much so I know of a Doberman breeder who lives just on the border of Ontario and says she will no longer sell puppies in Quebec.

I abhor BSL. It is knee jerk BS. We have no Breed Specific Legislation here in Portland, and with all of our city's faults, we remain one of the most dog friendly cities in the US.

That being said... breed specific discrimination here is rampant.

I am a small time landlord and have been since 1980. Mostly single family, duplexes and small apartment buildings.

Honestly, I am one of the only people that I know who will rent to folks with dogs, regardless of breed. I have to meet the dog and the tenant must comply with basic requirements. I have never had to 86 a tenant due to dog issues. If problems come up, they take it upon themselves to correct rather than be forced to move.

I only have 8 units these days. 2 duplexes and one 4 unit apartment building. I rent to 4 tenants with dogs. One dog is an APBT. Another is a 95 lb. Mastiff. Another is a GSD.
and then there is the little yappy mutt. The yappy boy was the most annoying. But the tenant of 3 years dealt with it

Over the years (decades) I have had more problems with cats than dogs.

I don't charge pet fees as I have never charged human child fees. LOL

If Breed Specific Legislation ever rears its ugly head here in Portland, I will fight it tooth and nail.
