Fun times ahead!

We are finally getting some nice weather here and we got to train for the first time last week at our club's field. Nadia was thrilled to be outside and had so much go on Thursday for both OB and Protection. Saturday she had go the first round for OB but I kinda lost her on the second round - partly due to my own errors and I imagine the sudden amount of sun and heat probably didn't help, but I allowed her to go chill in the rate and she exceeded my expectations in protection, I'm very happy with her progress!

This weekend we are heading to our first UKC conformation show and will be trying for the SPOT. Meanwhile my friend is taking her bitch for her first breeding in NY so I'm very excited for her plus I will likely be taking her other female to get final evaluation and approval for CKC papers (she's an import). The following week my club is hosting an IGP seminar with Denis Soldan from the Czech Republic and on Sunday we will try for the CGN (Canadian CGC). First weekend of June we might go down to the Working Doberman Club of Upstate NY to support their trial and go for Nadia's AD. Mid June we will attend an OB and tracking Seminar with Joanne Fleming at the Vermont Total Doberman Club, and my club will also be hosting a protection/ob seminar with Marko Koskensalo. End of June (weekend of June 30th) my club is hosting an inaugural grand prix challenge cup with cash prizes and the goal is to do our BH!

Later on in July back to VTDC for a protection seminar, and in August the DPCC National Specialty in Long Sault where Nadia will attempt the WAE. September another protection seminar with VTDC and an ATT at the Upstate NY club.

Depending on how she does for her UKC show this weekend I might also have to work in some other show dates! We will also keep an eye on RATS! Canada events.

Oh and to kickstart my excitement, back in January I applied for a registered kennel name with the Canadian Kennel Club, today my first choice was approved! Don't know if I will be using it any time soon and it is but a tiny tiny piece of the puzzle but it will give me something to keep believing in and striving for.

Thank you - our obedience is far from perfect in terms of precision (so the other day after practicing in a small training room all winter I wanted to see what her competition recall would be like in a similar context to what it would be for the BH - from a down, and then 30 paces out from her... She came at me like a rocket and wasn't able to slow herself down fast enough so she went right by me... but then without any kind of correction, she finally skid to a stop, turned around came back in front of me and sat down perfectly straight, at the correct proximity for the 'hier'. Made me laugh! ) but she has always had beautiful intense focus and engagement. Yet in that focus and intensity she is calm. You can see how concentrated she is - she's not the kind of dog who will start whining and barking at the handler. That to me is an important component of a real doberman drive. People confuse drive and excitement or energy. But drive is what motivates and interests the dog (often to a point where it is self-rewarding). A herding dog is motivated by sheep, a birddog will do anything for a bird - a Doberman is motivated by their human. She's a real pleasure to work with because of that - and I think it's the foundation of all obedience!

Nadia earned her SPOT this weekend!

She nearly had the SPOT-ON (Outstanding Neighbour) as she earned an Outstanding rating on 9 out of the 10 stations. The one where she didn't she got a Super (second highest rating) and the only reason was because of a fluke occurrence on the setup. The judge even said that for the actual exercise she was excellent, it was just that she felt she couldn't give us an Outstanding due to the time involved with the setup. (Nadia thought she was doing her job by pointing to the very strange stuff that was going on behind us just outside the ring).

She took Canadian bred Doberman Pinscher in all four shows, but since this was a fun class, no points. She took second in her 4 Adult Female classes, mostly due to my terrible handling skills and 'contradictory' training. Or, in the Judge's words "she's in love with you and won't stop looking at you which is great for the free stack, terrible for the move, especially on the up and down"

Still, she just thought she was doing her best so I can only be proud of her for always trying her hardest for me. At the end of the day I can't fault her for being so... focused and engaged. And what's love if not a dog willing to snuggle up with you and camp overnight in the back of a mini van?

Next week there is the IGP seminar at the club, and we will try for our Canine Good Neighbour!

Oh and her Advanced Cardiac OFA results are now online! Yay!

Nadia earned her Canine Good Neighbour today!
She is now Sunrock Cherry Blossom Lady SD CSAU TT IBAR SPOT CGN!

Yesterday she worked hard at the seminar, did a couple of escapes and her very first long bites.
