Relocation!

We have relocated from the Lone Star State to the ... Land of Enchantment? For the next two years, we will be calling New Mexico our home! And boy oh boy ... winters here are not like winters at all in Texas! So for those of y'all who live in states that actually have winter temperatures, do you have any tips on day to day living with a doberman in the cold? I know they aren't cold weather dogs, and Zeus is not an outside dog.. but when I take him for walks and it's 28 degrees outside with snow on the ground, should I have him wear shoes? I have a rain-resistant jacket that has a soft warm material on the inside that I figure I'd put on him when the temps are close to or below freezing, but what precautions should I take with his paws? Right now, there's snow on the ground, and snow is something I never had to worry about in the part of Texas that I lived in. Thanks in advance for any and all tips!

Photos of our trip!

Our road dawg! This was about 7 hours in. "Are we there yet?"

Mountains! And ... What's all this white stuff everywhere??

Checking out the snow

The downstairs of our rental home is not as warm as the upstairs, so we got Zeus a shirt to wear to stay cozy! My husband chose the design, lol

Welcome to winter!

My dogs don't wear boots when it's as warm as 28 degrees, unless there's a TON of road salt where we're walking or there's a particular reason I think their feet need extra protection. If you find you are needing boots, I can't say enough good things about the boots from Kondos Outdoors: https://kondosoutdoors.com/shop/dog-booties/. I use the Durapaw ones for snow and I haven't lost a boot in the five years Richter has been using his. They are pretty inexpensive and you can buy a single boot if you do lose one. They have a lightweight version, too, if you end up needing some for summer for the kind of terrain you have out there.

My two like a fleece in winter weather. Sypha doesn't wear one indoors most of the time, but Richter wears one as soon as it hits about...55 degrees Both wear one outdoors when it is down to about 45. That keeps them warm enough when we're walking. When it gets seriously cold here in MN we sometimes need to layer another coat over that, but I don't know that temps get that low down there!

Have fun in your new location!

I used to live in Maine and NH - 28 degrees was balmy! My Dobe never wore a coat or shoes, but when we were outside we were always on the move, walking, snowshoeing etc.

Where are you in N.M? Albuquerque is considered a sister city to S.L.C. It is 25 deg. here today and we are thinking it is quite nice outside, lol. We are going to hurry up and clean the yard before snow hits again next week. My Dobermans ...and Chinese Cresteds! love the snow, but not for a long length of time in it. He will make the adjustment I am sure. We use no boots. I will have to check into the link MC sent as it would be nice to have on Mt. walks or ice. The Dobes do love the jackets and our own Meadowcat makes beautiful ones. I hope you enjoy your new location! You probably won't have the summer humidity.

Usually I figured if I needed a coat, they would too. But there are so many variables...wind, sunshine, humidity, temperature, whether or not the dog gets to move freely, or is plodding along beside me, or just standing around, and what age the dog is. Here in Colorado, where it is bright and sunny with low humidity, if the temp was below about 25 in the middle of the day, it was sweatsuit weather for me, and the off-leash dogs had coats on. I'm guessing you may have similar temps, sun and humidity there??

For serious snow time, I always felt their ears periodically--if they were cool or cold to touch, it was time to go inside. And of course, if they were shivering--well, that was obvious.

As they got older (especially Kip) they liked a coat even in the house (but the room we spent most of our time in was chilly and drafty).

We never put boots on them. They might have appreciated them if the snow was deepish with a hard icy crust that they were breaking through all of the time; the boots would have been more to protect their feet from the sharp edges than for warmth. But we rarely have snow with a hard crust where I live, and we were generally walked off-leash on trails with no salt. So we never used boots. It seems to me that someone had a cut foot (not due to snow) and we used boots then, but more to keep the muddy snow melt off the bandage than anything.

And by the way, very pretty picture of your snow and mountains. Looks like you've landed in a nice area (speaking as a front range Coloradan; our foothills look very similar and we have dry-land plants , not quite as dry as you from the looks of things.)

Hey Gamer , Snow....Snow.....and you never have lived in it for any period of time ? Me neither...how exciting......
I did read a post on here one time about how their noses can get dry .....they have something for dogs....nose butter or something like that ....and stuff to moisten their feet I think its called “Mush Cream” maybe our snowbirds could confirm if Zues might need anything like that ?

And by the way, very pretty picture of your snow and....Mountains! Looks like you've landed in a nice area. Speaking as someone who moved from Louisiana to Colorado's front range, I think I know how you feel about the different climate. Our foothills look very similar to yours and we have dry terrain (not as dry as you, though, from the looks of things.) I do miss the tall trees and even the humidity (who'd have thunk it?) But...Mountains!...make up for it. And I like having four seasons, instead of hot, and a sorta grey cloudy chilly rainy few months that we used to call winter.

But I hear that NM gets the hot too. We people make use of a deep wading pool (10 feet across, 24 inches deep) in the summer, with no air conditioner it's lovely to soak in--I call it my summertime "hot-tub".

Musher's Secret in the winter; Udder (or Bag) Balm in the summer--I didn't use them much, but they were nice to have on hand. And if you're in a hot part of the state, you probably will need to think about paw protection in the summer more than in the winter. If you're running around in shoes, you may not realize how hot the ground is. Just stay off of asphalt pavement; it can burn feet in no time flat.

And dobes are wimps in the summertime heat. But you've probably already experienced that.

ECIN.....pbbtttt!!

And as for an all weather coat....I have a feeling they don't have much rain there.

Nice area refers to the mountains.

And I'm watching my diet, so brownies (of any kind) aren't on my menu.

And I like snow too....if it is deep enough.

Lol, you all always crack me up! Thanks for your help! I feel as if I'm overreacting to the weather here because of the snow. You are right. It's not like we're living in -20 degree temps! We took a short walk yesterday with no doggie boots or even his jacket on because it was sunny and nice. It was just around the block, and the snow is melting (even though word is it may snow again tomorrow) but I noticed a lot of salt that people have put down on their driveways and sidewalks so I made sure to wipe his paws when we got home because I'm sure it's not good to let that marinate in his fur.
@Cressrb , we are in Albuquerque! Eeeeeveryone I've talked to prior to moving here has mentioned hiking and walking trails in the mountains, and I'm eager to take Zeus because I think he'll love it! (when it's not cold and snowy...), and I'm curious about the terrain too, especially when it gets hot. I have some boots that I ordered on a whim a few months back that he sometimes wears when it rains (because he's a diva and doesn't like getting his paws wet so pottying when it's raining is always a hassle). I'll have to wait and see if he needs them if we ever do go on a hike... Though I have a feeling I'm being overprotective/overcautious. Having been in Texas, I know the dangers of hot asphalt! I always tested the sidewalk with the back of my hand before we went on walks, and I usually only did so early in the morning or in the evening when the sun went down.

@ECIN my husband got stationed to Albuquerque to work at the University of New Mexico in the ROTC program. Pretty much he'll be teaching a sophomore cadet class and doing Army stuff with the college students who'll commission into the Army as Officers once they graduate. We almost were sent to Roswell (because apparently there's some college there as well) for the same thing, and all I could think of was the probability of being abducted by aliens being pretty high! Pretty glad we got Albuquerque as well.

I have to say it's pretty beautiful here. I still get taken aback by the mountain view because I forget they're there until I turn a corner in my car and BAM! there they are in the near distance. To someone who's unaccustomed to seeing them, it's a breathtaking sight!
