Spock Update - Will Be Trying Hospice Visits over Summer

Since school is out for summer, Spock & I are getting our toes/paws wet into Hospice Visits. Several of our local Delta Pet Partners SA affiliate members are doing this work now. I went to Hospice office today with Spock to meet about 40 employees of the Hospice service organization. I met the Volunteer Coordinator (VC) at our annual Pet Partners meeting/workshop this last Saturday.

I gave Spock a chamois bath this morning and did his nails, just like we do during school year for the Read With Me visits. We dressed out in our vest/Pet partner's shirt uniforms and headed to the office. When I said we're "going to school", Spock jumped up and ran to the garage door with his nub just a waggin'! He has been moping around the house since being on summer vacations from his school visits.

During today's visit, Spock was calm, but interested and a bit reserved as we went from office to office at the hospice organization. He was himself when getting praise, scratches and attention from the (40) some, mostly female, employees. We even went into the lunchroom where he sniffed out something in a casserole tray under the microwave.

Spock laid down in the conference room after visiting everyone in the office, while Sam & I went over details of the organization and visits. Only one woman was afraid to pet him, but later came into the training room to see him where another group of employees was petting him.

This month, we'll do a shadow visit to a hospice facility along with another PP therapy dog team, similar to our first elementary school visit training. Then hopefully, shortly thereafter, Spock and I will make our first hospice visit. We will gradually phase these into our school visits when school resumes in late Aug.

I am currently also training our female Dobe, Eva, for the Pet Partner's Team Eval in August, as well. She has done well in initial training. Eva has had Basic Obedience, but not the CGC, like Spock.

Just got a pic of Spock today taken at the hospice office conference room, decked out in his Pet Partner's vest and harness.

FYI- My Purple Visit Bag has everything but the kitchen sink in it: hand sanitizer, napkins, treats, water bowl, trash bags, water bottle, deodorizer spray, paper towels, Windex, poop bags, first aid stuff, extra ID's, etc., etc.

Eva Passed Her Pet Partners Therapy Dog Eval!

This last Saturday, our Dobergal Eva (a.k.a. "Ms. Stubborn") shot down all the negative predictions and passed her Pet Partners Therapy Dog team evaluation!

Eva's New Pet Partners Therapy Team Badge Pic

Eva's New Therapy Team Album Page Pic

Ms. Eva is a much different personality from Mr. Spock. She is stubborn at times and loves her routines and not one to change quickly. However, she has a very loving temperament and craves human affection, like Spock. Also, when I practiced in past for Therapy Team Evals and visits with Spock, Eva would shadow him and wanted to participate also ("go to school").

During training over last month, I have been getting her up to speed slowly and in measured amounts. Due to blasting summer heat and her stubbornness, Eva did not like long training sessions. Occasionally, Eva would just shut down when she was fatigued. This is what I was most concerned about at the evaluation last Saturday, but it thankfully didn't happen.

The Neutral Dog and dropped toy portion of the Eval was no problem for Eva. She normally ignores large dogs and occasionally will try to play with small dogs. (another dog tested same day failed on the neutral dog test) Also, she is not the toy fanatico like Spock is... Luckily for us, throwing down of a high value treat was not part of the exam!

Eva was good with the noise distraction (dropping pan on floor behind her while walking) as I had been practicing that a lot in training. Eva's forte was letting the evaluator and volunteer exam, poke, prod and pet her en masse, as Spock, she LUUVVVVES human attention and being pampered! I plan to get her into the Read With Me (RWM) visits at the same school as Spock visits weekly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spock TD Update- We are now trying to get approval for Spock to visit our local city Senior's Center, with hundreds of potential Dobe admirers present daily! I declined Spock's offer to visit Hospice patients after making a shadow visit with another Pet Partners therapy team. Just not enough feedback for Spock to make such visits enjoyable for him, because he lives on attention...

Awesome, good job Eva!
The Neutral Dog part is what worries me for Zeus. He tends to bark when another dog enters a room and gets all riled up. *sigh!* Not sure why. He looks and sounds like a dog that's ready to rumble! (he has a loud bark and the fur on his back stands up) But in reality, if that dog were to get close, he'd just want to sniff him and play. We're working on it. He isn't as reactive when he's outside. Today, he did superb at the park walking past other dogs or letting dogs pass him. But when we're indoors, it's totally different.

He's a work in progress.

Spock & Eva TD Update

Just an update to say Eva made her first "official" Pet Partners (PP) Read With Me (RWM) therapy dog visit to our local elementary school on Monday.
I took Eva on a "dry run" pre-visit last week to meet staff and sniff out school facility, after students had departed.

Spock made his 2nd weekly visit of this school year today. Another PP female dog therapy team (female golden-doodle) attends the school on Mondays, leaving just before Eva arrives. Spock had all new student readers this new school year.

Both visits this week went really well, except many persons at the school are getting Spock and Eva confused. Most of the staff and students are familiar with Spock, since he visited weekly throughout last school year. However, most persons who are not dog/Doberman savvy still can't tell between Eva-(smaller with slender feminine head, smaller paws & ears) and Spock- (big honkin' head, ears, paws and body).

I have attached some prominent "Therapy Dog - Pet Me" heart patches on each side of her vest hoping to make her look more girly, however the PP organization has very stringent guidelines on animals wearing costumes, jewelry or other accessories- Not Permitted! (see link below) They Do permit seasonal scarfs or a single bow in hair or tail.

https://petpartners.org/resource/costumes-faq/

Any ideas to make Eva a more "girly-looking" Dobe within the PP guidelines, that my fellow DT members might have?
(except coloring her nails- also not permitted)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

One other issue with Eva that I remembered today during Spock's visit. A torrential downpour occurred outside the school library, but Spock just looked around some. However, Eva gets visibly shaken during heavy T-Storms and will shake, hide under furniture, which would not be good during a reading visit. The guidelines would have the team leave the facility in that case. If T-Storms were imminent on Eva's visit day, the school liaison said I could bring Spock in place of Eva.

Sorry, but no sparkles, per the PP Costume FAQ's.
https://petpartners.org/resource/costumes-faq/

The animals must wear whatever rig they were evaluated in, for Eva her leather collar with 24" traffic lead and she also wears a Pet Partner's vest. I could probably change out the collar and lead with a more feminine design, as long it is same type/length, etc.

Well, if she needs to wear a leather collar, I recommend this one. Ilka had it in pink, and it was butter soft from day one. She wore it pretty much 24/7 for five years, and it held up beautifully. https://www.etsy.com/listing/9838434...ar-choose-your

Very nice Spock and Eva!

As I went through the photos of the partners and their dogs(llamas, pigs, and little ponies)....I wasn't expecting that

I couldn't see the faqs, appear I would have to create an account. Can you wear something that would differentiate the two or are you required to have a specific shirt? Maybe the pink with Eva and blue or similar for Spock? Or maybe a name tag around your neck that says their name?

Moe- Sorry about that, below are the pertinent PP Costume FAQ excerpted:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Costumes FAQ

Per the Pet Partners policies and procedures, costumes other than seasonal scarves are not permitted while visiting. There are several reasons for this, including professionalism, infection control concerns, and allowing clients to directly touch and interact with your therapy animal. The following FAQs cover more specific questions about costumes and clothing. If your question is not answered here, please contact us.

Q: What is my therapy animal allowed to wear besides a collar/harness and leash during a visit?

A: Your therapy animal may wear a Pet Partners vest or seasonal/holiday scarf that can be laundered between visits.

Q: Can the collar/harness and leash we use be sparkly, have patterns, spikes, or other decorations?

A: For the safety of the client Pet Partners does not permit therapy animals to wear anything that has parts or pieces which could come off of the equipment, such as sparkles, sequins, or glitter. Additionally, novelty materials, like spikes, could damage fragile skin and are not appropriate. Regarding patterns, we do caution the handler to choose equipment that is positive, in good taste, and in keeping with the animal’s breed/species.

Q: Can I hang a charm or bell off my therapy animal’s collar?

A: The Pet Partners tag is considered acceptable equipment. Any charm or addition to the therapy animal’s equipment must not have sharp edges or pieces that could come off during a visit and must be able to be cleaned between visits. Always be respectful of those you visit. While you may think the sound of a bell coming from your animal is a cute addition, the client or facility may not.

Q: Is clothing such as a coat, dress, or sweater acceptable?

A: Therapy animals may not wear clothing while on visits. Clothing, other than vests and scarves, should be taken off prior to entering the facility.

Q: Can my animal wear a bow tie or collar/tie combination?

A: Ties and other human-inspired wear are considered clothing and are not permitted.

Q: Can my animal wear a decorative or seasonal harness or vest?

A: Therapy animals must wear the same type of equipment during visits that they wore when being evaluated. If the animal did not wear a harness during the most recent evaluation, they may not wear one during visits. If the animal did wear a harness during the evaluation, any new harness must be of fundamentally the same type. Any equipment item that has pieces with sharp edges or elements that could be pulled off during visits is not permitted.

Q: Can my therapy animal wear antlers or a Santa hat for the holidays?

A: No. Hats, headbands, and other headgear are not permitted during visits.

Q: Are bows acceptable? What about barrettes?

A: A single bow in a therapy animal’s hair or on their tail is acceptable if it can be laundered between visits. Barrettes should not be used as they can present a risk of scratching clients.

Q: Is jewelry incorporated into the therapy animal’s hair acceptable?

A: No. Jewelry could scratch or harm a client while petting a therapy animal.

Q: Can I dye my therapy animal’s hair different colors such as pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

A: No. We do not want to confuse a client who might have dementia or mental health issues or take away from the professionalism of the Therapy Animal Program. A pink bandanna or scarf would be a way to support breast cancer awareness within policy.

Q: Can I shave/style my animal’s hair in a fun pattern such as a mohawk?

A: For the purposes of AAI, therapy animals should look like the animals they are. Any styling of an animal’s hair/fur should not change or disguise the animal’s appearance to the point a client may not recognize the animal for what breed/species it is."

I think Rosemary might have steered us on the right track, getting a more feminine leather collar. Her current Whiskey Leather collar is black w/silver ranger stars, but I'm leaning toward a Red Latigo leather collar. Eva is just not a pink collar type of Dobergal, I wouldn't want to embarrass her!

Here's one personalized 1.25" red leather collar on Etsy, from HiHorse- Canada, I'm looking at now.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/5384129...om?ref=reviews

Since her name is so short, we could request having it embossed twice on collar or use a nickname, such as "EVA THE DIVA" .

I don't think "BOSS B/TCH" or "ALPHA B/TCH", although more accurate, would be appropriate for use in Therapy Dog work....

Another idea I have is to attach some girly patches (e.g. "GIRL POWER") to her vest, with hot melt glue gun, which I used for her existing vest logo patches.

This is one of my favorite treads on DT , this work is so cool to read about

Great job all

So glad it's going well!

Do they mean "bandanna" when they say "seasonal scarf"? Because, if so, I'd start having her wear a bandanna that is in girly colors in additional to changing out for pink leather for her collar.

MC, Yes, bandana is same as scarf, per answer above about Breast Cancer Awareness.

I ordered a few "Girl Power" heart patches off Etsy in Red w/Pink lettering. (with about as much pink as Eva can tolerate) to glue on each side of her vest.

Sticking with Eva's red color scheme, I also ordered the Red/Silver leather collar from HiHorse in Canada- Requested double embossing of her short name and still checking if they can add silver stars at extra cost...(like on their blue collar)

There are some amazingly cute bandannas that you can buy on Etsy! If it were me, I'd totally buy some girly bandannas and rotate those out (and, of course, I'd go overboard, because...that's me )
