Vent - Doberman Cropping Judgement. :(

long time reader, first time poster yay! This post is really just a vent...I picked up my new puppers yesterday from Dr McBride in Florida. She is beautiful and I love her and we named her Rumor, I am absolutely elated. But after getting home today I am exhausted, granted it was a 700 mile drive, with a puppy, and a stop overnight in a hotel, so Im cranky and hangry on top of the exhaustion.

I get home today, bust through the door to show Rumor off to my fiance and our good friend who is a DVM. and the first thing out of my friends mouth isnt about how sweet or pretty she is instead its a comment about the ears. "oh look at those, I cant beleive they still do that to just babies, oh poor thing" then my fiance chimes in "oh really friend? they dont look good do they? does she need to go the the emergency vet? Kelly are you sure they are ok?" Seriously this is the first thing I hear upon arriving home and I just bust out into tears...I was tired and hungry but Im still really hurt by it. Then friend goes on about how "bring her in tomorrow we will do laser therapy on her monday tuesday wednesday" so on and so forth. I wanted to scream, I dont want to be judged on this..what did they think they were going to look like? they came home standing up and healed?!?!? I also do not want to go to a vet who is going to lecture me or talk down to me or judge me. Im just upset, its silly i know but it hurts for some reason. I should just toughen up i think

I wouldn't go to this vet either. And I wouldn't consider them a friend welcome in my home either. That level of BS I'm surprised she stopped with the ears and didn't **** on you for buying from a breeder instead of a shelter or rescue.

owning a Doberman comes with it share of outright righteous from others. People who have had Dobermans and I have had them for 28 years hear everything from how this breed will turn on you and running their mouths about cropping and docking. One learns to walk away or say something snarky. My comments depend on the mood that I am in. After traveling with a puppy even for a short distance I too would be on my last nerve. Living in Florida one of my past girls came from a breeder in this state and Dr. McBride always performed all of her crops. My girl had great looking ears. Hang in there follow the advice on post cropping found here on DT and from Dr. McBride. I am sure your little girl is beautiful and we all love pictures on DT

When one owns a Doberman, one must develop both a thicker skin and a "kinder- gentler machine gun hand". That, coupled with a sense of humor and tolerance of the ignorantly

It takes an extremely passive aggressive person to confront someone on something like this.

In any case.... Welcome to DT. Socialize your new puppy well and hopefully she will become an ambassador for the breed.

If it's any sort of consolation (and it's probably not) I got my first Dobe in December 1959--and heard all the same insulting bs but usually from strangers and have been hearing it ever since.

Mostly I don't respond to ignorant comments from non-Doberman owners--basically I pretend to be deaf.

But I would certainly be writing off that DVM as a potential primary care vet and definitely as a friend. The thing that would have irked me the most is that they actually have an ethics class in most vet schools as part of the requirements for graduation--and one of the things they make a big point of is that vets should never ever make depreciating comments about other people pets. Now that the "good friend, DVM" has successfully insulted you, the puppies breeder and another Vet--Dr McBride, who does stunning crops--I put that "good friend" on permanent hold until they did a lot of apologizing to you for starters.

Even though I've been involved with Dobes for over 50 years I remain amazed at the kind of things people who evidently know nothing about the breed say and evidently believe it's fine for them to spew them to anyone who will listen.

4 X 4 John has the very best advice--just grow another, thicker layer of skin and ignore what folks like this have to say.
