Pet peeve

"Dobe" is the abbreviation for "doberman".

So how did we get "doby", "dobie", "dobby", or "dobbie" from that? Those just do not sound right!

Dobie (Dough Bee) what we used as "endearment" term four decades ago. One rarely saw it spelled out, so most folks were left to their own devices to interpret the written form of "Dough Bee".

"Dobie" seems much more accurate than "Dobe". Unless you really want to say "Doughb" instead of "Dough Bee".

Me, I use both interchangeably . Just depends on how I envision it being pronounced. LOL

Now the others (Doby, Dobby, and Dobbie), not so much.

Apparently my spelling auto correct agrees with me. It never argues with Dobe or Dobie, yet rejects the others every time. And who am I to argue with my word processor ?!?

Probably the same way that we got "dashhound" and "rockwaller".

Although I don't have an issue with "dobie", since that's how I remember it being spelled when I was younger.

I feel like proper use of the English language makes dobe sound like dOb. I much prefer the cuter sound of "dobie". That was always how I spelled it before joining this forum and it's the only other way I spell it. Now I have become too lazy to put in the "I" so please know when I type dObe it should be sounded out like dObE.

When I see "Dobby", I think of house elves... it drives me nuts to see it as a dobe synonym.
And I read "dobe" and "dobie" as two different words.

I use Dobie more than Dobe but I certainly have said both. Neither bothers me. A lot of people seem to know the breed as Dobies; I get a lot of, "Is that a Dobie?" or "Is he full Dobie?" when walking the dogs, and the people asking have never owned one.

Rottweilers are sometimes called Rotties, Dachshunds are called Doxies... I don't think it's too uncommon.

I feel like when it's spelled like Dobby, it should be pronounced like bobby or mommy. And I agree that's a house elf Def. not the right sound for a dobe

I too am grammar conscious and dobby and dobbie are right out, spelled as if pronouncing a much different sound than dobie! Dobe could be like dobie or without the "ie"

I'm with greenkouki and I am as old as dirt. As far as I know it has always been Dobe, at least since the dawn of dirt and I cringe when I see any variation thereof; Doby, Dobie, Dobby.

I abhor improper grammar. What were these people doing in school? Obviously, not paying attention in English class.

I am still okay with "Dobie". But, it must be capitalized.

Now i am confused , I always thought Dobgna was when a doberman chews with only their front teeth usually to themselves and their furry friends but hurts like hell when done to a human.

I would love to know this, too! I wonder if the reason is similar to the reason we here in the States say "color" and in Europe it is "colour."

Well, my two say, "You can call us anything you want, just don't forget to call us for dinner!"

I dislike all the ones that rhyme with Bobby. Half the people I know call them Dobies. I like the whole word Doberman and never use a shortened version. Dislike the Pinscher part and wish they would just get rid of it.
