McCoy the guard dog!

Unless a dog is trained defense/protection, one never knows how the dog will react in in a real life scenario until it happens. Well it happened in our household last night.

It was 3 AM, when McCoy, who sleeps open crated upstairs, came rushing down the stairs in full on alert. Barking, growling racing back and forth. I called him into our bedroom and he came to me. I didn't hear a thing, but he was still growling so I released him and he ran straight back to the living room and resumed his frantic barking and growling. So I grabbed a shotgun and followed him as he ran to our front balcony door still barking.

Sure enough we had an intruder trying to break in. He claimed someone was trying to kill him. I told him that if he didn't back down, I'd kill him. I opened the inner door and briefly turned on the light so he could see that I had 12 gauge pointed at him. one foot from his chest. The whole time, McCoy is standing by my side growing.

I told the guy to get on the ground, which surprisingly he did. I sent McCoy back to my wife and he sat by her side the whole time she was on 911. I held the intruder at gun point until the police came and arrested him. McCoy then went straight back up to his crate and slept through the rest of the night.

Happy ending. (Nobody died)

Good boy McCoy... you just passed the litmus test!

As for the intruder, I'm sure he's thinking he chose the wrong house to attempt to break into.

Glad to hear you & your family are safe! Sounds like McCoy contributed to your safety. If he hadn't been there to alert you the situation might have ended differently.......

You post is a great example of how dogs can provide a layer of security, even when they are untrained and/or untested. The litmus test aspect needs to be addressed though.

McCoy did a good job of alerting you, which is all most of us really need. When folks who understand dogs express doubts/concerns about how a dog will react, they are not talking about whether a dog will alert or 'act tough'. Many, many dogs of various breeds and pedigrees will act territorial, alert you and/or put on a good show. Again, that is all most of us really need but those characteristics are common and not breed specific.

Part of what separates a "Protection" dog you can rely on from a general run-of-the-mill dog, is whether the dog will bite and fight a human. What happens when the bad guy ignores the dog? What happens if he picks the dog up and slams it against the wall? (plenty of guys can toss a 90lb dog like a rag doll) How about when the dog takes a solid kick to the stomach?

Here is an example for you A large imposing Great Pyrenees with a deep intimidating bark. He's very territorial. This dog is practically fearless and and will charge up to an intruder as if he were ready to kill. Without testing you would probably assume he's a good protection dog. He's not. He's a good ALERT dog but that's all. If you corner him, he'll give a weak, defensive 'bite'. Otherwise this dog will not bite at all. The dog looks, sounds and acts scary as hell but a bad guy could drag the owner out of her house and the dog would just circle around barking. A kick would probably make him shut up.

McCoy did a great job. He alerted and that allowed you to take care of the situation. I'm not implying he wouldn't bite and/or fight if the situation had called for it. Maybe he would.

My point is to clarify that the concern about untrained/untested dogs is not whether they will alert and/or act tough. The concern is whether they will engage and fight.

Your dog did well. Please give him a few pats from me. It was a great post up until you mentioned using it as a litmus test. The scenario is just not something you nor anyone else should use as a basis for evaluating actual protection capabilities. It's not good when folks operate on bad information or false assumptions.

"If there is an afterlife for dogs where they get to do the things they love he ain't off chasing butterflies; he's now some Angel's PPD out there patrolling heavens borders and fighting demons."

@ adhahn.

I agree with every thing that you said. McCoy was never intended to be used for protection. Ever....In fact, I have gone to extremes to socialize him, as I had a couple very aggressive Dobermans over the last 40 some years and Im a way to old for that hoopla.

I was actually very surprised at McCoy's innate protectiveness and persistence.

My idea of a "litmus test" was to be sure that he would alert me to an imminent danger. Nothing more..... Nothing less. Except, perhaps, give an aggressor a moment of pause. Which if you are familiar with general self defense, gives one a very nice advantage.

I am a 60 something Life Member of the NRA with the legal right to carry concealed. I am in darn good shape and hold multiple degrees in a variety of martial arts.

Again, I agree with you. If one wants a dog for protection or to be 100% reliable as an alert dog, they should be professionally trained. That's not just what I want from my dogs.

Glad to see that mcCoy was on the job. Your actions, being armed and immediately calling 911 , were correct. Any dog, be it just for an alarm, a trained personal protection dog, a police K-9, or a military working dog should always be backed up by an armed handler.

4x4 - glad to hear things went as well as they could given the situation. Hopefully that guy will learn a lesson or two...sadly given our legal system I don't hold out much hope, but you never know.

And good for you and McCoy for handling the situation well!

And also good to see I'm not the only one who still hangs onto old traditions like hand-typing their signature ("Port;and" is a dead giveaway. )

Thanks.

Honestly, I was really glad the way things went down. I had no idea whether he was armed or not. Personally, although I would do it to protect me, my family and friends... The last thing I would ever want to do would be to shoot another person. The police were pretty cool. It could have been a lot worse.

The best thing was how McCoy responded. Stayed on alert. Came when I called him. Went right back on alert. Stood down when I told him to. And went back to watch over Nancy. Allowed the police to enter with no issues. Yeah!

That was what I found so fascinating and awesome as well.. That McCoy responded to you, he was focused and intune. The fact that he listened under that kind of intensity, is so amazing and says so much. What an amazing boy you have!

Hey 1/2brother John, I can hardly believe the life-similarly / my wife's name is also Nancy.

McCoy - I am so proud of your boy / protecting his loved ones.
- no intruder is going to wreck &/or harm his "made in the shade" family life
Cheers, Larry

McCoy sounds like he's the perfect "modern doberman". He's a beloved family member but still knows his job. Good boy!!!

LOL... No reason to! The dog eats better than I do.

However my son is taking McCoy and The Sheriff to the coast tomorrow for a couple of days. Should be fabulous weather at the beach. they will have a ball.

My wife just pointed out that at 19 months, McCoy has never spent a night away from me since he came into our household. Weird.... But true...
