What would you Change About the Doberman?

This was a fun topic brought up last night and I thought it would be fun to discuss here.

If you HAD to change one thing about the Doberman what would it be, whether it be the breed, the owners, the breeders...anything?

I said I would require all owners to take online (or in person) breed specific classes so that people know and understand what's required of the breed they are thinking of purchasing. That's not purely 100% Doberman related but I think we could stay a lot closer to our breed type temperament if people weren't trying to purchase a lab in Doberman clothing.

I would say DCM. Get rid of that so all these lovely dogs are dropping dead at such young ages.

That would be my choice, too. Find a similar breed that doesn't have cardio to outcross to for a limited amount of time, and see if we can't stamp it out, or at the least, reduce it.

Good breeders are working towards a healthier doberman... other than that I agree no need to change anything. We're in a world that already wants to change everything else so let's at least keep dobermans dobermans.

I wish there were requirements other then known pedigree and cash for registering a dog.
As an example. Both parents must have had a holter and some sort of mentality / temperament evaluation / test done in order to register the puppies. The result would not be key at this point, just that the tests has been done.
The reason being
1) collecting data in order of understanding and evaluating the state of the breed.
2) Using said data to adjust breeding practices.
3) Such evaluations / tests are already being done by reputable breeders but will be a pain in the but in less then reputable ones hence enabling breeding by people who care enough to do the tests.

Give a Dobe a THUMB and language skills! OMG--are you crazy? Mine gets into enough trouble as it is--the ability to use the computer to order things, open the door to go outside and get to into the refrigerator on his own is more than I could face. LOL

Though it would be nice if he could tell me when he really NEEDS to go outside in the middle of the night, or whether it is just a compulsion to sniff around and check the yard for interesting things--though he would probably lie.

If I could make a law it would dna test dogs to their owners. So if ever there's an owner surrender, or a dog found missing, or a dog brought to a vet... the animal could always be traced back to the owner. This would be so helpful in dog abuse cases. I know this isn't possible but in a perfect world....

Gretchen, wouldn't it be easier to just require registered microchips for every dog and their owner? It would definitely be cheaper!

Aside from the health issues, I wouldn't change a thing. Mocha has been such a joy the last 2 years, and she brought something into my life that I didn't know was missing.

She is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are her life, her love, her leader. She will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of her heart. You owe it to her to be worthy of such devotion.

For those of you that said nothing. you wouldn't change requirements for breeding whether it be further health testing, breeding limits, required temperament tests... you wouldn't want owners to be required to be more responsible? Just throwing some stuff out there in our newly make-believe world I'm making up.

I would improve the nerve and working drive in the breed as a whole. There are a few out there that are adequate, but not nearly enough and stud dogs are extremely hard to find.

That was my point in required education of buyers so we could improve the temperament to more of what it should be. Too many people wanting labs and not putting in the time to train and socialize leading to disasters.

Get rid of DCM!
Haven't been on the site in a while.
We lost our Red Boy Stryker (6yr 7mo) almost 7 weeks ago to DCM. It still seems like an hour ago.
