Oh.. BTW.

My above was TIC... Mccoy is never cute. He actually always looks "intense". He never looks small or "girly". But, who knows? Things can change!

Just thought the back drop was cool....

Handsome pup!

I'm kinda shocked that you have the prong collar fitted improperly though? You always seem very knowledgeable. I am going to leave this article here to help illustrate how it should be fitted! The way it is hanging on his neck is dangerous and can injure McCoy. You should also look into getting one with much smaller prongs. Large dog does not equal large prongs. We use a size small with extra links

Yeah... you are so right. and I appreciate your comment...

McCoy does not walk with a prong. He walks with a halter w/ a sternum (d) ring.

If he gets too out there, I route the lead under his leg.

That collar happened to be on him because i am looking at buying a Lola's Leads training collar. and wanted to see how he reacted in general to a training collar. He was not walking at the time.

That collar was Butcher's (RIP) who was a 90- 95 lb. dog .

i was thinking the 14 prong 2.3 mm. I would love any advice BFL.

McCoy will always walk soft leash, but it is on a "heel command". In fact he walks well off lead. However we have very specific regs here in Portland w/ regard to off leash dogs. And Dobermans are "Skeery"!

Personally, I think a pup should be able "roam". My problem is typical of a lot of dog owners of my age. I have a degenerative hip and a problematic knee.

Advice? Not just to BFL, but to anyone who would care to ring in...

John

We have this one. Size small, 2.25mm. I bought 3 extra links. --> Leerburg | Herm Sprenger Stainless Steel Prong Collars

My boy is 21 months and weighs about 82 pounds. It fits perfectly The larger prongs aren't needed because dobes have such short fur! You can also fit them to size very easily. My boys collar doesn't move out of place, well maybe a half inch or so if he shakes with it on, but it stays in the proper position. It wouldn't if the prongs were larger (we tried a medium at first).

We started using one at about 13 months. Honestly I just put it on one day and clipped the leash to the dead ring and he did fine! I didn't correct with it and just let him get used to the feel. He self corrected mostly. We quickly incorporated it into our training and now only use it when we go out in public. We first learned to heel using Kiko pup but my boy is SO stubborn we had to graduate to something else to progress.

Every dog is different though. Some are too soft. Some aren't phased by correctional collars at all. Do what works for you guys! Plenty of dogs at our training club don't use correctional collars, never needed them.

He's beautiful. We have VERY strict rules here in PA too. The second you step foot off your property without a leash, expect to be hollered at…ESPECIALLY with a Doberman.

When my husband and I retired from the military, we were in San Diego. We could have gone anywhere, or even stayed, but we couldn't wait to escape and go somewhere with a little more freedom. Or, as my husband said, a place where he could have as much land as he wanted and as many dogs and guns

Anyway, I use a very short traffic lead with Hilde when we go into public. She can't get leverage that way and it keeps her from wandering. Mostly because she sneaks up behind people and puts her head under their hands to get pet. No manners at all!

This is a comparison of the two prong sizes with the Lola Limited collars. Ilka's collar (pink) is a 2.3mm 8 prong collar Leo's collar (green) is a 3.2mm 6 prong collar. Leo has the larger prongs due to the fact that she has so much coat.
