Does anyone sing to their dogs?

I got my girl Jazzy when she was 12 weeks old. I attempted to crate her the first night I had her, but she whined and I caved because I was so tired from the trip.

The next two nights I crated her, in my bedroom, and she only whined for about 3 or 4 minutes before going off to sleep.

On the fourth night when she whined, I listened and I thought about it a minute or two. I got up, took her out of the crate and into the bed with me. She has slept with me every night since. I had always intended for her to sleep with me and the only reason I didn't in the very beginning was that I was worried she would pee in the bed. She never has.

Okay, now onto what this thread is about.

In the early few months of her sleeping with me, she always had to have a toy to chew on before I could get her to settle. The time for her to settle was on average about 20 minutes.

I wouldn't go to sleep before she settled as I didn't want her chewing on something without me supervising. She had a tendency to ingest what she chewed.

I would be so worn out at times that I got tired on waiting for her to settle, so I started singing to her. She would always stop what she was doing and look at me. I would stroke her head and back while I was singing. It wouldn't take long and her eyes would start to droop and she would lay her head down and drift off to sleep.

I also sing and dance with her. Turn the radio up and and she bounces back and forth. She will spin around and play bow. It's pretty comical to watch.

She is also a reactive dog and I have found that making a shushing sound, speaking softly and or singing really calms her down.

On a side note, I grew up hearing the old saying that "music calms the savage beast." I googled it to see how that saying came about and found out this:

Music, magic or not, can soothe savage beasts.
Original quote this title originates from is, "Music has Charms to soothe a savage Breast." The phrase was coined by the Playwright/Poet William Congreve in The Mourning Bride, 1697.

Anywho, if I have held your interest thus far, I would love to hear from anyone else who sings or uses music with their babies.

I make up songs and sing to my girl all the time. Most of them are embarassing and only her, my husband and the other animals get to hear them. I like to take pop music or other ear worms and change them to include "Doober" (rhymes with Goober- she's my Doober Goober), or Dobie, LeeLoo or dog. 95% are made up on the spot and I really don't recall them .

Right now I'm singing lots of Doberlicious to Fergalicious.

One of my favorites, sung to Barbie Girl, changed to Dobie Girl:

She's a dobie girl, in a dobie world
It's fantastic, the toys are plastic
You can brush her hair and taker her everywhere
No Dalmatians, it's Dobie Nation
Come on Dobie let's go potty, oh oh oh oh
Come on dobie let's go potty, oh oh oh oh

Eddie Murphy's Party All the time- changed to Potty all the time

That's just a few that come to mind.

I sing to Jasmine all the time. I put her names in songs when we're in the car too. She likes songs with Jay-Z and Kanye because she ball so hard !

I sing, clap and dance for Rex every day when I come home from work. He jumps of joy and "kisses me" while in the air, lol. This is the highlight of my day

Every dog should be given a chance. Please consider adoption.

Dad sings a little:
- is my girly, is a beautiful girl / a one liner, sometimes repeated
Mom sings some good oldie nursery rhymes...monkey, sheep & spider ones, to recall a few subject material.

Dobe Dance Lessons:
- start when puppies are wee babies, get them to put their front paws on our chest, while there standing on the leather loveseat...and wiggle together, to a song or tune / pick them up, dance around the living room
- as they grow up, our girls will stand up one put their front paws over our shoulders
- next its 2 steps forward, and 2 steps back......repeating the 2 step

Bluedobie - glad to here Jazzy girl, has you wrapped around her sweet paws.
- and found her spot, beside here loving mom...in bed

Funny thing here, our alarm clock is on Moms side of the master bed (for good reason)...I never hear it.
But when our son fell out of his bed (30 years ago), I heard the thump and jumped up immediately.
- and I can supervise a new puppy, with one eye open, it seems
- 3 nine week old puppies raised since 1977 here, and never had one pee in our bed / when they stir, out we go

Kelly likes to suck the blanket on the end of our bed, for 10 minutes...but never chewed a hole.
(she sucks nothing, on the couch or loveseat...just a bed time, a little...we have a big baby)
- never had a dobe that needed obstruction surgery, but in first few months, I train that foreign objects/splinters are spit out
- she may rip a damaged squeaker out of her 2 foot snake, and will leave the plastic squeaker with a bit hole, on the floor
Pups can be easy to potty train, sleeping with us...after all, its 24/7 supervision & we don't let them chew up their bedding...another valuable life lesson learned.

The other day I noticed she liked the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams.
When the song was played and I started some crazy dance for her, she stood up and smiled wagging her tail. She was amused

I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that a 50+ year old man singing lullabies to two Dobermans may taint what little machoism he has left!

I will admit that I sing to Coco a lot and we also dance to songs in the privacy of our own home sometimes. She's a good dancer because she's so tall and oversized.

A lot of my songs to her are about mama loving her baby and that she is a crazy dober bober.

I will only admit this to you guys or my family who have witnessed it.

I do sing to both my boys and do the dobe dance, he's fantastic. I used to do lots of "dancing" things with my border collie, but keon learns them much faster and he is great at it, he does foward and back in front and behind of me and by my side. Legs on shoulders, waist or harm (depends on the song) and we do spins and twirls. He really enjoys it. The hard part is including my poodle, but he does a few bits.
But I've noticed that he prefers calmer music, he's the romantic type, whilst my poodle rather pop-music.

Good job I live alone !

What I sang when Shannon was a puppy in my lap....Yeah, go ahead say it, Im crazy I know

Shanny, Shanny, give me your answer true!
I'm half crazy over the likes of you.
It won't be a stylish marriage;
I can't afford a carriage.
But you'll look sweet
Upon a seat
Of a bicycle built for two.

Six years later...sometimes when she is in her bed. I curl up and sing it to her. I love her.

I make up songs for my girl as well. We love the Barbie song! I won't type the whole thing, but it starts with: She's my Jazzy girl......so on and so forth.

I sing You are my Sunshine, but insert her name, you are my Jazzy.....

One I really like is an oldie, by the Everly Brothers. Again, I insert Jazzy's name.

Devoted to You:
Jazzy you can count on me
Till the sun dries up the sea
Until then I'll always be
Devoted to you

I'll be yours through endless time
I'll adore your charms sublime
Guess by now you know that I'm
Devoted to you

I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie
I'll never be untrue
I'll never give you reason to cry
I'd be unhappy if you were blue

Through the years my love will grow
Like a river it will flow
It can't die because I'm so
Devoted to you

I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie
I'll never be untrue
I'll never give you reason to cry
I'd be unhappy if you were blue

Through the years my love will grow
Like a river it will flow
It can't die because I'm so
Devoted to you

I guess I really like this one, because it shows how I feel about my girl or any animals that I have had.

I will be devoted to this girl until the end of her time or mine as well as my two senior 17 1/2 year old kitties.

You know, our babies may not be able to speak the words, I love you, but they surely can express their love through other ways. I swear just looking into my sweet girls eyes, I can see all the way to her soul.

Baron loves when we sing to him and sometimes he will chime in. He loves to sing with the Happy Birthday song and lately we have been singing the "Soft Kitty" song from the Big Bang Theory and he loves chiming in with that one.

Oh yes, I sing (horribly) to all my animals and Rogue will even dance with me!

Sometimes she'll even dance with me at her own accord since she's so kind haha. My girl sits on the mat in the kitchen while I cook (away from the stove no worries) and when I've had one too many cocktails I'll be listening to my iPod and ask Rogue if she wants to dance. Too which replies by trotting over, I'll pat my thighs and she'll put her paws up for a dance!

Also I sing her "Up Town Dobe" and my husband makes up sooo many dobe songs to sing to our guys it's nuts.

I used to sing to my boy:

Up in the air jr. birdman
Up in the air birdman fly.

He had natural ears and I would lift them up and sing.
He always looked at me like I was crazy, but seem to like it.
To Bandit's dad, I'm 60, and don't care what these twits think!

Oliver RIP
With enough thrust, pigs fly just fine.

I think we don't need to meet you personally to know that, through your posts and pictures it shows through your love and pride for them.

Besides your two are SOoooooooo lovely that they could never cause you to do anything embarassing, it would just be considered cute and a sign of your love.

Edit: Not so sure in my case, but hey, people think I'm crazy already for having Keon, so anything else I do will just be part of my crazyness

I sing, I sing loudly to no one in particular.

Tank seems to prefer the Hip or Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne...

I've known no deeper love, than that from my beloved Doberman

I sing a version of soft kitty to my dogs too!

"Soft Doggie,
Warm Doggie,
big 'ol ball of fur...

Happy Doggie,
Sleepy Doggie,
woof, woof, woof."

Sometimes I say "Dobie" ...

Usually right after the dreaded dremel time

My great grandparents and great-great grand parents were cheese makers.
For hundreds of years, cheese makers would sing to their Dairy Cows.
They believed it increased milk productivity.

For the horse people, you know a good ol' truly "good horse Farrier," if he whistles.
The whistling soothes the horses.

I don't think you'll find a singing Farrier.

I sing to my little old rescue Poodle and it started my Doberman to sing along.
Here is my song:

"My little Poodle with a little noodle....
Insy binsy...
Teenie weenie...
Mighty whitey...
Curly twerly...
Tiny heiney..."

My Dobe loves this song, and will "WA Wa Waaaaa..... " In cadence of my silly little song.

I admit it, I've always sung to my dobes. The song I sing the most is "You are my sunshine"

All I got in this World is My Word and My Balls... and I don't break'em for Nobody[/CENTER]
