Black or Red? Which would you choose and Why?

Sorry guys i know this has probably been done before, i tried looking but didn't have any luck. so if it has been done, could you please post a link, otherwise this is my question-

Which would you choose a red Dobermann or a black Dobermann, and why would you choose that colour over the other??
now the only choice's being black and red (not the other three) is because i am trying to decide (if i have the choice) which colour to get for my next dobie.

i know there are problems concerning the blue, fawn and albino/white Dobermanns, is there any problems (that you have found/noticed) that concern either the red or the black but not the other (this could be health, temperamental ect)

thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers, Jess

Red! Or should I say brown as that is what the Euros are called. Twenty something years ago I had a red Dobe/Weim mix, ever since then, I wanted a Red Male Doberman~Petey was well worth the wait, he is my heart and soul dog. I love the brown collar of the reds.

I don't care as long as my dobe is healthy and happy!

Seriously though, I have a black/rust, but I guess my favorite color is red. Like I said though, I honestly don't care.

I voted Red. Because I already have a Black. I LOVE his sleek shiny black coat. I really do. Black was my first colour choice (for my first Dobe). But if a few years down the road, all the stars and planets were to align in just the right way to allow me to get another Dobe, I'd get myself on a waiting list for a red show bitch from an excellent breeder. I would like to have one of each.

But it's not really a good idea to be too picky about colour anyways, because we can't always get exactly what we were hoping for. Thakoon's litter was all black, (Sire can throw red, but dam was not tested for colour genetics and this was her first litter so no one knew what to expect). So it's a good thing I didn't have my heart set on a red puppy

I specifically chose red because of the sheer unpopularity of them around here. Every dobe I have seen in my area has been a black and tan, I love all colours of dobes, but the red really does call to me.

I am so lucky with Aidyn, he's just the picture of perfection when it comes to structure and markings. He's so beautiful, and so smart! I just couldn't ever see myself with any other breed or colour now. (beagles and huskies aside, as I have those atm).

First off....there are only two of the four colors represented in your poll. I would happily take either red or black, but not dilute. To me it's about the individual and not the color. I would choose not to deal with the skin and coat problems of a dilute however (although I think the colors are beautiful, and I would make an exception and steal Toad from Bug any day of the week).

I voted red because there are just so many blacks!

People get so excited when they see Athena... I don't think many people see red Dobermans in person. Just pictures. They just get so excited and amazed with her color, haha.

When we get our second dobe in a year or two, it's going to be black.

The best choice is one of each!

All 4 of my Dobes were black. Our 3 one was almost a red but he had already been promised to someone. He was 6 months and very beautiful. But then Dax came and sat under my husband's chair and that was that. When we went to see Baron, the person had a 10 month old red female but Baron was the one she needed to find a home for. Since we have always had blacks, I guess that would be our first preference but would not rule out a red. Baron's kennelmate, she is 11 months old now, has now been adopted out also. I love her color. It is a much darked red, almost chocolate, color. They are Dobermans, so they are all beautiful to me. Lois

The redder the better! No matter how nice a dog of the other three allowed colors might be, I think they'd look even better with red hair. In some cases, if the dog is pretty enough, I don't hold their lack of red-ness against them, tho.

It doesn't matter to me - I have both. There are just so many other things that are more important - pedigree, health, conformation, temperament, longevity, etc.

Vader came from an all black litter so we picked . . . black I agree with Maryand dobes - there are more important things then color, but I'd kinda like a red sister for Vader.

Black. (although the reds are very, very cute!) But I think the black/ rust really shows off the muscular stature of the dobe, and gives it an overall sleek look........but we all have our preferrences........whatever floats your boat! LOL

thanks guys for all your help. I also agree with MaryandDobes 100%
i was just curious as to what people thought of the colours and if they have found any differences between them. as i have never owned a red i wouldn't know.

thanks again for all your help, it is greatly appreciated.

There are no differences between the two, just personal preference. Hypothetically speaking if there were two identical dobermans except one black and one red I would choose red.

I have never picked my dobes for their colour but by the individual instead. I like each of the 4 colours for different reasons but I do LOVE the shiny coat of a black dobe.

Ive heard people say that reds are dorks but I think that is about as rooted in truth as any kind of human racial remark. With that said, I love Sebastian's colors and if I had to make a choice in the future, I would probably pick another red.

I used to prefer the 'red' because I've never seen them before but now I think that I would prefer the traditional black and also because their coats appear to be shinier.

I have blue, but if I only had the option of red or black, I would chose red, any red I've seen had a perfect shiny thick coat.

I chose Red. As we will with our new puppy.

I fell in love 33yrs ago at a field trial training kennel I worked at on weekends & throughout the summer as a teenager.

The facility owner {and several employees} was scared to death of Dobes, but we had a customer who had a red male & black female & loved our facility for boarding. That worked entirely to my benefit *big grin* I couldnt wait for those 2-3 times a year when the Dobes were coming to stay. I would come in just before sunrise to have an extra private hour with them to feed & sit in their kennel, revel in their beauty, laugh at their duet capabilities & take them out for an extra daily run by the creek before I went on the clock. They were so incredibly smart & both were sneaky little clowns out in the fields.

I've wanted a big red male like King ever since. And ultimately hope to own another female or two playmates in the years to come. But I totally agree that the health & soundness of the puppy is way more important than color.
