Yep, and dilutes can be expensive with the skin issues, trust me. I am maybe getting a red female next year.

I chose red because it was less common...although there is hardly any one in my area who has a dobie any way...so now he is just extra rare.

I've had five Dobes since 1973 and all have been black and rust, including my two current dogs. I like the sleek traditional look of the black and rust but I would be open to a red as well. While I like a good fawn, I'd steer away for fear of coat problems. However, Cathy Ceely's girl Emma is just gorgeous and always sports a nice coat.

I was torn between a red or black male. Of course it seems that almost anyone who doesnt know a whole lot about the breed (including me when I first was looking) figures they are all blacks. I just kept seeing the Reds and thinking a Red male would be fun and different and something just strikes me that is special about the way a deep red (brown) looks, then I would go back to nah I should just get a traditional black so no one has a question of what it is... The litter I am getting my boy from is only red males and only black females, so that made it easy for me if I wanted a male it HAD to be a red. We will see how it works, but I sure can't wait.

I didn't have a color in mind when I first started looking. I figured that the right one would let me know when I found him or her. Logan was a fawn, and when I went to his owner's house to see him, he came walking out of the garage and leaned on my leg. So he made that decision and I happened to be smart enough to listen to him. After he passed, when I was looking for another, I thought it would be anything but a fawn. I wasn't ready for another fawn after Logan. I saw Griffin's photo on the rescue's site, and that was it.

I've never owned a black Dobe, but I can definitely say the reds are goofy and have fun senses of humor. Logan had his goofy side too, and was one of the most perceptive dogs I've ever had. Honestly though, I love them all. When I'm able to add a second, the only thing I know for sure is that she'll be a female. I would go for whichever color happens to go along with the right Dobe for me.

The best choice is one of each!
HAHAHA this is exactly my thinking. There aren't enough red dobies out there. Also exactly my thinking when you say to have one of each!!

I prefer black because the 2 reds I had both got sunburned coats and had to be lathered with sunscreen daily which was greasy. They were also related. The first one also had a very very very low thyroid and an awful coat. Even when we got the thyroid normal, the coat wasn't great. I have seen reds with terrific coats tho.

sorry for double post

it's SUCH a hard question...

thinking about how I would only own one a time(personal preference) then I have to decide how old I want to be when owning each colour.

Maybe reds are better when I'm younger and possibly in the life of the doberman starting a family because reds look less threatening/scary for friends and kid's friends and for kid's friends' mothers to let them come play?

But... if I owned a red would I be able to come away from reds and own a black? hmmmm... it's so tough...

Maybe... own a red and have a really really close friend who owns a black? That way I can play with both, but only own and have to really care for one.

That sounds like a plan!

When I first thought about owning a doberman I was VERY into blacks, but now reds have caught my fancy. However, seeing as I won't be owning a doberman in the near future maybe by the time I get one I'll prefer blacks again? Also depends on what the breeder I choose has available.

To answer the simple(not so simple) question of red or black: Right now at this very moment, I prefer red.

First off, color takes a back seat compared to health and temperament. Secondly, I would own red or black. I love dilutes, but not as much as the other colors.

I own a red AND a black.

Seems they think they only come in black---next person that asks me --I am going to tell them "A chihuahua from Juarez Mexico--they breed them big down there"---was going to get a black, but the reds were beautiful also and I had a black one when I was a kid at home--so I have a red and get dumb questions also

I have owned both and found no real differences outside of color and individual personalities. Personal preference, is black. However, color will not dictate my choice of a puppy. Overall quality, soundness, health and temperament will make the determination.

You know what I've always loved? That one of the first things the breed standard says about the doberman is that his appearance is "elegant" and "reflects great nobility." The black just has that gorgeous shine to it, and compared to the red- it emphasizes the muscles and makes those rust markings stand out like nothing else. I think the reds are beautiful dogs, but I wouldn't describe them as noble- not compared to the blacks.

So I voted black!

At this very moment in time I love the red colour more than the black, but would love to have both.

The one thing that i've heard about he reds is that their colour fades in harsh sunlight areas.

so i just thought dobermans as a breed were pretty goofy

I LOVE the red/rust markings though, they're so striking

Black

My first Heike was black and she was my childhood dog and was my favorite
My second Heike was red
My third Heike was black

I like black, but if someone knocked on my door right this second with a red dobe I'd jump for joy!!

Our Chopper is our first Dobe. He's a red and we think he is just gorgeous! We had a black lab mix for 15 years and had to put him down in February. So we ended up choosing red simply because I needed a change. Goood luck!
