Red and Burns' Nail Trimming and Dremeling Demonstration

Hey guys I put together a couple videos - one on nail trimming, and one on nail dremeling. Nothing special, just sort of a walk-through on the basics of both trimming and dremeling.

Let me know what you think! :biggrin55

Thanks Burns! I have never used the dremel but Im gonna now that I have seen it done. He is such a good boy! He bows his head like he is focusing and thinking, "all I gotta do is get through to the other side of this and get my treat!" Seems like no matter how careful you are, they still hate the clipping part.

Nail Trimming Demonstration Video

Nail Dremeling Demonstration Video
Thanks for the video, and I think it helps explain why our guy dreads it so much. We are taking off a lot more nail material with the dremel than you did - we really grind them down. Sometimes we get a spot of blood from quick, but usually we get right to the point where you see the quick dot without hitting it. And you are correct - time and temperature. We have to be careful not to stay on one nail too long as it heats it up quickly.

You are lucky that you started Red as a puppy. When we adopted Cinny, she had eagle talons. We dremel every 3rd day and I've just about given up hope that they will ever be as short as I would like.
(and we take them down way more then you do.. just before quicking).

btw, Red is as handsome as ever and omg, you remind me so much of one of my best friends!!!

Thanks for the feedback, guys! :biggrin55

Nail trimming and dremeling can seem kind of daunting to beginners which is why I thought it would be helpful to do a basic walk-through.

You will like it. You can get the nails a little shorter with the dremel, plus you can file off all the sharp edges too. Makes for a nice manicure

The loud noise of the dremel can be scary at first so when I first started with it, I would get the treats out and just sit there, turning the dremel on and off, and rewarding him for sitting there. That way he could get used to the noise of it. The vibration can be somewhat weird for them too, which is why I did a treat after each nail when I started.

Also, I didn't stop whenever he would start to fuss - I'd pause in what I was doing, then start again for a few seconds, then when he was calm and still, I would stop. That way he knew that fussing didn't get me to stop - only sitting still and being calm would.

Deja Vu

That's what we were doing last night! However, for show we take more off than just the rough edges. By the time I am done they are little round balls, but I do not hit the quick. His back nails were so short I just clipped the ends off. They didn't need to be ground.
Reggie lays down just like Red, except he puts his head in my lap while we do it.

Your dremel is really loud! There are a lot quieter versions if the dogs are sensitive to it -
good videos though!

I don't trim nails before hand because their nails are just too short to trim, so I just dremel the entire time - I end up taking off a lot more than you do with the dremel and I shape a lot more as well, beacuse I am taking back all over, I also dremel under the nail as well.

I just did W's before you posted and I dremel exclusively. I hate squishing his poor nail with clippers, call me a sissy. :p I'm leaving them a wee bit long lately because he has no traction and we start agility on Tuesday. I round them all off and then use a little antibiotic ointment to shine them up and prevent anything crazy just in case I got too close to his quick. I use the blue dremel mini-mite that I got at walmart. Best $20 I ever spent.

Thanks guys

Like I said in the video, everyone has their own methods and techniques - just do whatever works for you and your dog

Here is the dremel I bought - a cheapy $20 one, but it serves the purpose fine. Maybe if I did them more often, I wouldn't have to use the clippers, but I just can't get into the habit of doing them every week! Call me lazy, lol

Great vid burns. I was considering doing this at one time, but Strike dosn't have black nails, so it wouldnt be much help, lol.

I worked in a groomshop cutting nails for over a year and my only suggestion with this is that I almost always myself and for newbies, take the paw back upside down to cut the nails. You can see the make up of the nail a lot better and it helps in learning to clip.

Wonderful video and what a good boy. I personally dremel entirely different. I put my dogs on a grooming table and do them while they are standing and pick up their feet just like a farrier does a horse and do them that way. I stand on the left side of the dog for all 4 feet and pick up the front feet towards the back, underneath them. You get much better control and it's WAY easier and faster.
