Niko's Seizure Thread

I will make this quick. I am a wreck and need my DT friends to support him.

At 7pm Niko was mouthing and drooling I thought he swallowed something he shouldn't have and it was stuck. I took him outside and watched him he seemed fine with the exception of the mouthing and drooling.

Brought him back in, he was on his rug by the door, I sat with him looked in his mouth etc. Nothing. The mouthing got worse, I called my husband over and Niko started to shake stiffen and made a couple of horrible sounds.

I can not explain this to you any clearer than I thought he was dying. We all witnessed this terrifying event. May 11 yr old is not doing so well, it was very traumatizing for her...traumatizing for all of us.

We took him immediately to the vet who witnessed another seizure at approximately 8pm . They did what they had to to stabilize him, watched him a bit and sent us to emergency.

As we pulled into the parking lot at approximately.... I don't know what the hell time, god love him, he had another one. We saw it coming the mouthing and drooling again. My baby, he looked like he was dying, my daughter ran in to get help. They took him away and immediately took care of him, meds IV etc.

3 in less than 3 hours. I lost track of time.

He is there now blood work will be done to see if there is any issue physically. They are calling it Grand Mal "Cluster" seizures unknown etiology.

My Himmy, please pool all your get well thoughts to him.

We are very emotional right now. I have no concrete answers yet. I just had to come here and write this down. I love him. I am a mess, I can't, i just can't wrap my head around this.

Cathy

I want to send a sincere thank you to everyone of you who have responded. It is nice to know that we can all rely on each other in good times and bad.

Niko is back at the vets office (from overnight emergency) where he will stay for monitoring. He will come home tonight.

He had 4 total seizures last night (one after we left) after the last one the did a phenobarbital push and it has seemed to help. He did have one semi episode before I picked him up today, but NO mouthing in the car.

He is groggy, scared and unsure but alive and stable!

He will go home with Pheno. and hopefully that is all. It will take 2-3 weeks to build so please forgive me if I look to you all again for comfort should he seize again.

I have not heard back on the lab work.

RFR, I did tell them to add thyroid, thank you for the advice. They did not want to do heart monitoring yet.

I have more to say but I can't right now. Please tell me he is not suffering.

Thanks to all of you, your concern means more to me than you can imagine. I am still a wreck. I will update you soon.

I'm so glad they added the thyroid testing--you did make sure they're sending it out for a full panel, right?

And, will they send home some Valium for him, in case he seizes again on you?

It's "IV Valium" you want to ask for, if you don't already have it. Don't worry, it's not given IV, but instead you use a syringe and flush it into their rectum--I know, sounds gross, but their body absorbs it really quickly that way and it gives them a lot of relief.

Your vet can give you guidelines (write it down, you will forget, in the panic of the moment) on when to administer, when to repeat a dose, etc, etc--but it feels so great to have *something* on hand to make sure he doesn't suffer thru a prolonged seizure again--esp. while the anticonvulsives are building up in his system.

I'm glad he's going to soon be home with you. Give him some ear rubs from me.

He is not aware during the seizure. So he is not suffering there. But during the post-ichtal phase, he will be unsteady and clumsy and may run into things and be unable to do normal things. The danger of letting the seizures keep running is that they burn up their body. Great help for that on the link below.

Go to this site and start reading, seriously, a great collection of how to proceed and how to talk to your vet about how you want to look after your dog, the side effects of the various meds and the follow up testing you will need to do forever.

Canine epilepsy and diseases that cause seizures in dogs

I am so sorry, Chatty. I just can't imagine something like that happening to Parker...how awful for you and your family to have to watch Niko go thru those horrible looking seizures.

Really, really hope they can find and eliminate the cause.

So sorry to hear about your boy Niko.....I hope the meds work and keep him stable without anymore seizures. I can only imagine how terrifying it would be to witness. When it is your own family it is amplified for sure. Big Hugs to all!:butfly:

Sending you a boatload of HUGS and strength. I'm so sorry to hear this. Epilepsy is common in Vizslas, my other breed and BCs which many of my agility friends have. I do know several people who have dogs with need pheno and are back up and competing relatively quickly and lead pretty normal lives.

I will keep all of you in my heart and prayers and wish for a speedy and positive recovery from all of this. (((HUGS))) to you and your family (especially your daughter) and to Niko. GET BETTER SOON HIMMY!
