Hey guys!

My little Bruno is just about 5.5 months now - he is growing like a weed and becoming such a wonderful dog. Training going well - however, I am experiencing some skin irritation from a harness from leash training. We do about 3-4 miles a day on leash for his exercise, but the harness began to give him red little bumps (like acne) right where the material rubs. I'd like to continue his leash training on collar, but don't want him to experience the collar chafing that we see with dogs. Anyone recommend a great collar to leash train this boy with? He is about 42 lbs now and growing quick!

It looks like he's wearing a leather collar in your picture?

Leather collars usually don't rub and cause hair loss at the neck--nor irritation sufficient to get the little red bumps you say the harness is causing.

The worst offenders for rubbing are nylon collars and harnesses. The harnesses tend to rub right behind the elbow where hair tends to be thin and soft especially on puppies--long time trainers often use sheepskin (real sheepskin) sewn on to the harness in places like that to avoid the rub irritation.

I train on a flat leather collar or a slip collar which is round made of a soft surface fabric (like some rope's are made of) those don't wear on the hair of the neck but I also don't leave those collars on all the time.

Hope this helps a little.

I'm of the "never attach the leash to the collar with the tags" person, and use a martingale collar for the leash. It's harder for them to get out of than a regular collar, but as a limited slip collar, doesn't get too tight.

With leash training I use a neck collar.
Harness’s have their purpose .
For my boy Hoss we use harness or vest during nosework because I want him to feel free to roam and find the scent.
Thats a time of which I am following Hoss. He is the leader during this event.
But for leash training I want control. Hoss is to follow me.
So we use a martingale with a nice 6 feet leather leash.
By having my leather leash (leather heavy leash nice snap to it) attached to his neck collar ....that allows me to send messages to him threw my leash with just a little snap. Snap of the wrist ...like if you were lightly tossing a frisbee.
If not following me that little snap is his warning to pay attention to me....follow me....if he continues to try and run the show and do his own thing .....BAM I turn.
Hoss learned real fast 1 warning ...thats it ...no exceptions.
Sometimes I turn away from him.....sometimes turn into him which really gets his attention.
Over the years ...
Hoss has learned the difference between vest and collar.
wearing his vest, he knows he will be the leader and using his nose.
Leash attached to collar, I am the leader and he will follow me.
Martindale collars are very nice to work with IMO.

I got to thinking about leashes and collars vs harnesses--the only thing I ever use a harness for is tracking--and the tracking harness is identical to most of the harnesses that police departments use on the dog in their K9 service. But those are on trained dogs and they are always for dogs who you want to be leading you. Just like LaDi said.

Rosemary--I agree. In fact I don't attach tags to any of the collars I use on my dogs--and the loaner, Joey has a nice leather collar (and it has t be the best deal in leather collars of all time--I'll have to ask his breeder where she orders them. They are presently $16.00 latigo leather--dyed on the outside in your choice of common colors--either 1-1/4 or1-1/2" wide. (I'm too lazy to go and measure it--it's in the other room) His name and his breeders phone number are engraved on the colored side and is very visible. The uncolored side is raw latigo--a medium to light yellowish brown that gets browned with age and uber easy on hair and skin.

In leashes it's wonderful stuff on your hands--gets softer with age age and some of my latigo leather leashes are 25 to 35 years old. I try to buy them (when I have occasion t buy them) in the type that are braided at the snap and the handle not sewn.

PS All the tags go into a three ring note book I keep for each dog--it has their health records--any tag that goes in there with anything (microchip and rabies) the certificates for everything are in the note book--pictures, ribbons etc.

My dogs typically wear their tags on their regular collars 24/7, unless we are doing something where they could get in the way or just be a bother hanging down, like nosework or parkour. The martingale collar with the leash is in addition to their regular collar.

I use harnesses for a lot of things, just not regular walks.
