Hi I am new here and would like to get some advice I recently got a puppy Doberman she is 10 weeks now and I have a ear crop scheduled this week. At this time a lot of the reputable vets in my area (Portland,Or) are all booked up or they are not taking new patients due to COVID. So I ended up finding a vet that does ear cropping. They do have some reviews that say they do a good job and are knowledgeable. After asking the vet questions my concern is they will be doing it with a Scalpel rather than Laser I’m not sure if this is normal for vets to do it this way. Has anyone else had vets do the ear crop with a scalp??

Hi Robert.. Welcome from your hometown!

I am also from Portland. Before you go ahead with the crop, I think that you should.consider the fact that there are no vets here in town, or anywhere nearby who are considered to be quality Doberman ear croppers. Is the surgeon local or are you traveling out of the area have your girls ears cropped?

DT member "dobebug" also lives here in town. She is extremely knowledgeable about all things Doberman, including cropping. Hopefully she will respond to your post soon. Info your should private message her before proceeding.

This is just my opinion and experience, but I have owned Dobes here in Portland since 1974.

Best to you and your new girl.

There has been an interesting thing going on for a few years now and I find people have have been told that laser crops are better than ears cropped any other way. There is not particular advantage to a laser crop--it doesn't heal faster or stand faster and unless the vet is very accomplished using a laser it's possible to make a lot more mistakes with it that with surgical scissors or a scalpel

I've had Dobermans since 1959--all of them cropped. I've been the assistant (fairly often) for many of the crops since the mid 1960's--none of my dogs were cropped via laser but I often help people who have never gone through the posting process and have seen some bad crops with every method but some of the worse were laser crops.

And frankly I'm in Portland and there isn't a vet in the Portland area that I would let crop any of my show prospects. There are a couple of croppers in Oregon and I've seen some of their crops and I wouldn't want their crops done by those vets either.

Some of these vets have been doing crops for years--doesn't mean they do good Dobe crops--those vets are few and far between.

There are really very few places that crop at all any more and if my breeder hadn't already cropped my puppy for me and I had to find someone to crop him for me and I was just way too far away from any of the well know really good Doberman croppers I'd look for a vet that crops Great Danes (they have crops most similar to Dobe crops) but the vets who can do really good crops on any particular breed are few and far between.

Good luck--but lasers are not the mark of a good cropper.
